The doctor just told me that my Vitamin D levels are way, way low (I have a 7.4 level and she said that 32 is what she considers low) and that may be part of my memory loss, fatigue, concentration problems that I have been having.....does anyone have any experience with this problem.....

I have to take 60,000 milligrams of Vitamin D 3x weekly for the next two months and then 5,000 daily afterwards :scared1:

I have a severe deficiency but I have thyroid cancer too. I take 1 pill 50,000 once a week and all my blood tests have been good so far.

My Vitamin D levels were low from end stage renal disease. I had to take large doses fro a while, but now I am on a maintenance dose of 1000 iu daily. Good luck! I hope the Vitamin D corrects your problems

I have an autoimmune disease and experience terrible joint pain. My rheumatologist found that my Vit D was very low and says this can make pain much worse as well as the other things already mentioned. So yeah, I have to take supplements, too.

Yep, im there.

I found out just this week that my Vitamin D level is low and Rheumatologist reccommended 1,000 IU a day. I had to ask for vitamin D screening.

I have heard there is a quarterly shot available.

1000iU did not even touch my levels; they actually went down. Even 5000iU just kept it stable. I take 10000iU a day---5 2000 iU capsules. It is normal now, but just barely above what is considered normal. They didn't find a reason mine was so low, and I am outside in the sun for 30-45 minutes every day(teacher)

I'm deficient, too. My level was 18 last month, so I'm on a once a week 50,000 tablet, then test again but 1,000 - 2,000 a day for life.

I was deficient a few years ago and took supplements and felt much better, but I slacked off so I got low again. This time, I'm trying to be consistent and take them.

My DD12 was low as well (her low level is due to a bowel resection and absorption issues). Anyway, she was put on the 50,000 IU pill at first, once per week. She now is on "maintenance" which is 2 Citracal Petites + Vitamin D three times a day, so 6 pills total each day. One thing to remember is that Vitamin D works hand in hand with Calcium absorption, so you may want to talk to your doctor about increasing your Calcium supplement or adding one.

I have no idea why my Vit D levels are so low, but I've been battling with it for the past year since we found out. My first Vit D level was about 8--extremely low. I've been on 50,000IU weekly for much of the last 12 months and I'm still only up to 22 :sad2: I don't know how long I'll have to take this stuff. Maybe forever :confused3 I will tell you this. Since getting my Vit D levels up(even though they're not very high) I feel so much better. As the Vit D level has risen my mental fog has lifted, my depression has stabilized, and I have more energy. I've had cycles of depression for 40 years. It really makes me wonder how long the Vit D has been so low?

I have to take 50,000 IUI every other day (the green pill) as well as Rocaltrol 50mg 2times a day, I have so much of the stuff till I call it my sunshine in a bottle:rotfl::beach:. My Vitamin-d levels have been low since 2005 and It's a never ending battle:headache:. I did get it up to 12 last week only to have it drop again along with my potassium:sick:, did I mention that my calcium is still low too:confused3, I'm a walking vitamin shop and still can't get my numbers where they need to be:headache:. Good luck with getting yours corrected. I've been doing this uphill clime for 6 years now:eek:

I also am low. On the tablets.

Worse than the VITD was my VITB12. I had the same symptoms as the OP, and my B12 was at a VERY dangerous level. My body did not absorb the vitamins, and now I have an injection every 2 weeks. I am still low, not critical, have Pernicious Anemia. I do feel a wee better, but the Dr. wants to go to weekly injections now.

My level was about the same as yours. My doctor also prescribed the 50,000 IU dose of vitamin D. I'm actually the only patient my doctor has had that had side effects from it - I had tremendous back and hip pain from taking such a large dose. So I stopped taking it and started taking two liquid drops a day (1000 IU/drop). I got the liquid from The Vitamin Shoppe. It brought my levels way up and now they're normal.

I also had a lot of the same symptoms as you did, but I also have hypothyroidism which has many symptoms in common with vit. D deficiency. With the research I've done, it's quite common to have hypothyroidism and vitamin D deficiency. Yay for me.

No worries, my levels were so low--dead bodies often have higher levels (not even kidding). I took 50,000 IU a week for a while and it didn't raise my levels. Then my doctor moved me to 100,000 IU a week for a while. Once my levels got in the normal range (took 9 months to a year), I started taking an over the counter 2000 IU per day. I never felt particularly poor before, but definitely feel better now.

First, the Vitamin D pills make your pee a funny color right after taking them, don't worry it's normal--it did freak me out at first.

Second, you will have so much energy on the days you take the 50,000 IU pills.

The human body produces Vitamin D3 when exposed to ultraviolet light. You can try getting outside more. Although the darker your skin (it's theorized), the less efficient your body is at creating Vitamin D.

Also, these foods are high in Vitamin D:
Catfish
Salmon
Mackerel
Sardines
Tuna (canned in oil)
Eel
Fish liver oils (like cod liver oil)
A whole chicken egg
Beef liver

I have a vitamin D and Calcium deficiency along with a B12 deficiency.

I don't remember my numbers for either (they were both diagnosed about a year ago) but my vitamin D and Calcium have been fairly stable recently but my B12 has started to drop again. It was stable for a few months after 2 months of injections but when it was drawn in december again, it had dropped a lot so we are waiting to see if it keeps dropping. We have no explaination for the B12 deficiency but apparently it takes years to get how low mine was.

I would also ask about adding a calcium supplement. My doctor said that they go hand in hand so if you don't have enough vitamin D, you are probably not absorbing enough calcium either.

Just started taking Vit D- 5000/ day and I feel 1000% better. I never had my levels checked but after reading about Vit D deficiency, I was amazed by how some of the women sounded so much like me. Now I have more energy, the vague muscle and joint pains are going away as is my lethargy and stomach problems. Supplementing my thyroid meds with the Vit D has made me 15 years younger than I felt just a couple of weeks ago.

I've been seeing an endocrinologist doc for vitamin D deficiency for a few years now. I take calcitrol twice a day plus that weekly megadose a few times a year. Haven't noticed that I've felt any different though - but then I had walking pneumonia for about 6 months the year I was diagnosed so I felt awful from that.

yup that's what i do but I take 6,000 units daily in between RX's...I give my one son 2,000 IU daily. I do this due to my medication for my Epilepsy draining the Vit D out of my bones.

You should also take some calcium with it. Remember never take Calcium without Vit D because the Cal alone will suck out the Vit D from your bones. But you can take D without Calcium.

My D drops occasionally, but I know why.

Why didn't your Dr just give you prescription D? I get that and only have to take it a week before levels are normal.
