We are planning a trip this summer. Has anyone been lately? Some hotels sound kinda scarey!!

I'll be there in 9 days. It will be our first time there so I am a little nervous. It is going to be a very budgeted trip so I couldn't go for the big beachfront hotels. I found Days Inn at the beach for a reasonable price. It had the best reviews that I could find. I agree that some of them sound scary. I figure that we will be at the beach or sightseeing most of the time, so hopefully it won't be too bad.

When are you going? I will report back about our stay when we return if you want me to.

I have lived in Va Beach for almost 15 yrs. Although we live about 9 miles from the oceanfront. I really dont know about the hotels at the beach. Just from going down there, some look nicer then others. If it were me, I would stay at a well known hotel, not the no name ones. Some of the no name ones(Well there are names, just not a chain type)off on side streets that dont look very good, but they all stay busy during the summer months.

I also live in Virginia Beach. I live within 3 miles of the oceanfront. I agree about staying in the hotels that have names that are known. Some of the other ones are a bit on the dumpy side. I will have to say that they have done alot of work at the oceanfront and it looks alot better than it used to. I hope the ocean water heats up a few degrees before you get here. I was there over the weekend and the water was so cold I could barely stand to put my feet in it.
I will be back down there over the weekend for the Patriotic Festival and will see if it has gotten warmer.

Hey locals... what about the dining situation? I want some good seafood when I'm there. We looked up Rudees and Captain Georges. What are they like?

Captain George's is real good. All you can eat seafood buffet...yum! I haven't eaten at Rudee's. Our favorites for seafood are Bubba's and the Lynnhaven Fish House. Both are on Shore Drive, a little bit of a drive from the oceanfront. Depends on how far you want to travel to eat.

Bubbas as in Bubba Gumps? We ate at one of those in Daytona. It was fun.

We are looking for a reasonable place to stay in Richmond as well. DH wants to tour the Confederate cemetary there.

Nope, not Bubba Gump- this is a totally local place.

It had great food when I used to live there though........ and ITA about Lynnhaven Fishhouse- we try to stop there whenever we come back up to visit friends.

DH loves their Hush Puppies, and the She-Crab soup is a meal in itself for me.

I wish we had all the water front places like you do. I live a stones throw from Lake Erie and we have nothing.

My oldest son is in college in Richmond. I don't know where to recommend but I do know that you want to be picky and listen to those who do know. Richmond has some real bad areas. Unfortunately his college is in the midst of one!

Oh great! Thanks for the heads up! I'll do some hefty research...

We went to Hollywood Cemetary last weekend!:thumbsup2 Have you checked out their webpage - its really good, tells about some of the most famous graves, etc. It is very close to downtown - so alot of the hotels are pretty expensive....I'd probably try Priceline, or similar, but keeping to the "downtown" area. If you just do the general Richmond area you might end up quite far away (I noticed when I googled downtown hotels some were SOO not in downtown:confused3 .) THe downtown Double-tree is probably your best bet (not cheap though...) but the other downtown ones are even higher - again, Priceline might work. Good luck and have fun!

Captain Georges is good from what I remember.

I lived in Va. Bch for about 6 mo. awhile ago. This question is for the locals:

Are the restaurants called The Reef on Shore Dr. and (we just called it Teca's) the mexican restaurant I think it's called Plaza az Teca's ? Still there? They were my favorites and DH and I still want to make a trip just to eat at the Reef. So I'm curious

Also, the meat stores sold a sauce called Jimmy Sauce that was soooo good. We'd put it on everything, but it was GREAT on hamburgers.
