Virginia beach anyone?

We went to Virginia Beach at the end of June a couple of years ago for a Regional soccer tournament and stayed here:

http://www.virginiabeachresort.com/index.htm

We were required to stay at the hotel they chose, and we actually were very happy with it. It's several miles from the boardwalk and all the action tho, but had a nice beach for the kids and the hotel was clean and nice enough. They're all suites, so we had a separate living room with another TV, a balcony (we had a view of the Chesapeake Bay...beyond the parking lot ;)), a microwave, frig. And it was right across the street from a full grocery store, which was great.

We were tied up with soccer games often, but did get down to the boardwalk a couple of times and the kids had a blast. Mostly, the boys hung out on the beach...rented some sort of huge inflatable water toys :confused3 while I took some of the older sisters shopping :thumbsup2 .

I really loved VB.

I believe that's on Chicks beach on shore dr. It's very close to the restaurant I mentioned (if the restaurant's still there that is). I've never stayed there, but that would be the place DH and I stay when we go....sometime.;)

Oh, and if you stay at the virginia beach resort and conference center, you might want to skip the tourist trap restaurant called the Duck-in and Gazebo.

We used to eat at The Reef across the street and not on the water. It's a dive, but had the best crab legs, peel and eat shrimp, and fried shrimp I've ever had. We'd eat there and then cross the street on foot and have drinks out in the Gazebo at the Duck-in.

I know one of the major owners of that hotel. Glad you liked it:thumbsup2 .

OP: If you want to be close to the strip I would recommend one of the well known hotels on the BW, or there is a timeshare, Turtle Cay, that is a short walk to the BW. My DB and DF stayed there once and had nothing but nice things to say about it.

The Duck In is gone. Has been for about 2 years now.

Laverne's is very good and it is on the boardwalk and so is Waterman's. Mahi Mahi's is good but way too pricey for what you get, IMO. There is also the Rock Fish Grill and it is fantastic. Small but really good.

Here's a site i found while searching for the name of one of the restaurants I mentioned. Its http://www.virtualtourist.com/travel/North_America/United_States_of_America/Virginia/Virginia_Beach-890726/Restaurants-Virginia_Beach-BR-1.html

Good luck and have fun!

OMG, people love this hotel - I just didnt mentoin it because it is rather north of the "strip" (boardwalk) area... It is nice w/little ones because the waves arent as big as down in VaBeach proper. If you like to be removed from the wildness at all this is perfect. Also, my alltime favorite area restaurant is righ across the street (and a bunch of other non-touristy restaurants are nearby too...) We go to this spot on every day-trip we make - my parents used to go there on dates over 50 years ago.:goodvibes  :cloud9:

Captain Georges is good from what I remember.

I lived in Va. Bch for about 6 mo. awhile ago. This question is for the locals:

Are the restaurants called The Reef on Shore Dr. and (we just called it Teca's) the mexican restaurant I think it's called Plaza az Teca's ? Still there? They were my favorites and DH and I still want to make a trip just to eat at the Reef. So I'm curious

Also, the meat stores sold a sauce called Jimmy Sauce that was soooo good. We'd put it on everything, but it was GREAT on hamburgers.

Plaza Azteca is still around...getting bigger (opening up shop on the Peninsula as well) but the food is still great!

Not sure about The Reef...but a couple of other places I've been is Tautog's (excellent food, very small place), One Fish Two Fish, and if you are looking for something really memorable Steinhilbers.

We just got back from VA Beach. Had a wonderful time. Water was FREEZING but beach was nice. We stayed at Villa's on the Boardwalk. It's a timeshare place. We used our DVC points to stay there. It was nice, we had a full kitchen and used it for breakfast and lunch. Have to say we had our best meal at Rockafellers and our worse at Rock Fish. The beach is very clean. Would recommend using a chain hotel or timeshare. It was one of our most relaxing vacations ever.

Ok, no more talk of the freezing water. I'll be arriving there one week from today! So.....just how long does it take to heat an ocean????? Will one week be enough??? :thumbsup2 Could all of you locals head down there and get the heater started for me please. Thanks. ;)

Well, it varies form year to year - and its been a pretty warm spring....but..... we take a lot of day trips to Va Beach and never actually plan on swimming until the end of June/first of July. Sorry - maybe you'll find differently.:thumbsup2

I wish we had all the water front places like you do. I live a stones throw from Lake Erie and we have nothing.

What a coincidence...we are in NE Ohio right along the Erie shores and we were just talking yesterday about planning a trip to Virginia Beach. We have never been there either.

Thanks to all the locals for the info...

PS...even if they put resorts on the lakefront, you couldn't pay me to go in the water. YUK!

Well it's 85 degrees here right now and the sun is shining hard. We're doing our best to heat her up for you.

The Reef is still on Shore Drive just a little ways down the road from the Virginia Beach Resort Hotel. This hotel is actually located just inside the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay rather than the on the Atlantic Ocean so the waves tend to be much less (if you have little ones.) The Shore Drive area is a nice area if you don't want to be in the middle of the busier area down at the boardwalk/oceanfront.

Isn't that funny, I feel the same way. My parents built a house on the lake and I wondered what the big draw was. The lake always looks so cold an grey. Now if I had a house on Put-in-bay that would be different. What town do you live in?

We are in Perry..our claim to fame is the Nuclear Plant:lmao: Whereabouts are you?

Perfect! I have faith that you all will come through for me. ;) As long as the sun is shining bright, I will force myself into the water. After the week I had at work last week, I can't wait to get there and relax.

Yep, my sister lives in Madison

I bet your DH has a "glowing" personality. (sorry, couldn't resist):goodvibes

I was kidding about knowing where Madison Village is. ;) Any way....Did you grow up out this way?

Actually, I grew up in Mentor. DH in Painesville Twp.

Hey locals... what about the dining situation? I want some good seafood when I'm there. We looked up Rudees and Captain Georges. What are they like?

Rudee's is good. My hubby and I eat there a couuple of times each year. Rockafeller's is just next door, I'm sure that's the name. I've alwyas heard really good things about it. Right there with the other two at Rudee Inlet, but closer to the sand than the marina is the Lighthouse Restaurant. The other two places are a little better, but this one has the best views.

I've found this site helpful before:
