According to this story the new owners plan to close down the two New York Virgin MegaStores:

I suppose the fate of the DTD Virgin is contingent upon the current lease agreement. Does anyone know details about the current lease agreement?

I haven't seen/heard anything about it closing. Every time we go in there, the place is packed.

Their prices are competitive with discounters. Aside from that, they offer a lot of choices not available at discount retailers like Sprawl-Mart.

Good point, we have noticed that as well. However, we have also noticed most folks walking out empty handed. Not a whole lot of people walking around DTD with Virgin Megastore bags........ in our experience anyway. We have used their restrooms on occasion, though, but I guess that doesn't count.....

I buy 2 or 3 cds there on every trip. They have a lot of cd's that you can not find any place else.

I hope not! We bought several CD's and other items during our September trip, it is a huge (and awesome) store, unlike anything around home!

The Virgin store at DTD is a trip highlight for me. I download music but it's still fun to stroll through the aisles of all the CDs and DVDs and browse around.

The store closing won't affect my trips. I was in there once and that was to get out of the rain.

It's not closing -- at leats not anytime anywhere in the near future. It does trmemendous business because it stocks a lot of stuff you can't find at every big box store that sells cds and dvds (i.e. Wal-Mart and Target). A lot of people do not want to shop online anymore because of identity theft risks and people from smalller towns that only have big box stores love to go into Virgin and stock up on stuff they can't find back home. i live in a major city and can go hunting for stuff I can't find in my big box stores and yet still always find something at Virgin that I haven't been able to find before. Plus with their expansion of the clothing department (which I personally don't like but oh well) they're getting a lot of money from the teens that get dragged to Disney with their families but don't want to go home with a bunch of Mickey Mouse t-shirts. It's a very profitable store and it's not closing anytime soon.

DVD’s and CD’s will be obsolete in just a few years. It’s much easier, safer and faster to store and retrieve your music and movies on electronic media. You'll get use to it just as LP lovers gave up their turntables.

Such a shame. Giving up quality really stinks.

(Says the gal who still owns, and uses, her turntable.)

Virgin is far too noisy for me, but it is the closest place to find a book. I typically don't buy music on vacation.

I heard from another source that the lease IS indeed up this year.. so at least that part of the story MIGHT be true..

The lease expiration is true. I inquired on this forum back in October, 2007 if anyone knew about the lease details. Unfortunately I received no response.

I made a trip to WDW earlier this month and during the trip I checked on the Virgin Megastore lease agreement at DTD. Sure enough, the current lease expires (with certain options) this year. That much is certain.

So, aside from the taint by the mention by Jim Hill, my information supports the conclusion that the store may indeed close up.

I was given some other information as well that supports this conclusion but I’m not at liberty to discuss it because the matter is not on the public record as of yet.

Ok so Apple is making a burner. Ok now I get why Apple is backing Blue-Ray...now can someone fill me in on the rest? You know the whole Disney and Apple see eye to eye on Digital there for Disney is backing Blue-Ray only, yet iTunes is not exactly over flowing on the Disney side....and why buying Pixar means that Disney is buying Pixar for something other than movies?

Apple has burners on all the computers they sell (except for the new air computer) and has for a long time.
