My child and husband both have SEVERE asthma and allergies. Whenever we make our reservation we have that noted and CS calls it a VIP cleaning. I noticed your thread about getting "Pixie Dust" and not making any requests. I certainly hope a medical need is not resented.

Does anyone have the same medical cleaning requests?

It is certainly not resented, but if you requested the VIP cleaning there is a very very very small chance of getting upgraded... and here's why.

To do a VIP cleaning take HOURS. Washing bedspreads in special detergent, cleaning with certain chemicals. It's a very labor and time intensive process. If you WERE to get pixie dust with a room upgrade, chances are the upgraded room hasn't had the VIP cleaning, therefore it wouldn't be suitable to your medical need.

Upgrades are done on a truly random basis, as I'm sure you can tell by the other thread.

I hope you don't mind if I tag along on your post and ask a follow-up question: I assume that requesting VIP cleaning might mean that your room would not be ready until much later in the day?

I am thinking of requesting this not so much because myself and my middle daughter have asthma (ours is only moderate), but mostly because my youngest is on active chemotherapy treatment for leukemia, and is immuno-compromised (a simple fever will buy her a trip to the hospital, so we have to be very careful of germs). So am pondering making this request. Any info would be most appreciated!

And yes, disneyfamoffive, we are making another request. (Haven't contacted them re VIP cleaning yet -- still pondering whether we need to).

I've made the request myself once... I'm one of those people who may be allergic to something in the detergent and get a rash. Not fun.

You need to let them know that you need a VIP cleaning due to those issues and they'll have the room ready at the standard check in time.

Most definitely let them know this and request the VIP cleaning! Don't take a chance, remember Disney is where magic can happen, not germs and hospital visits. Don't hesitate in asking for this for your child.

Have a safe and fun trip!!

Wee Annie - it might mean your room isn't ready until later, or it might mean that they have an unused room from the day before that gets the VIP cleaning, and you get it at check in. There's really no way of knowing, it depends on occupancy.

To the OP - I've found that making a VIP cleaning request locks you into the room assigned, meaning if you don't like your room, you won't be able to switch at check in. That doesn't mean you couldn't be upgraded prior to the cleaning, they could clean a higher category room the same as the one you booked.

However, there seems to be a myth here on the DIS that there is something you can do to get an upgrade. Make a request; don't make a request; check in early; check in late. The majority of the time, it is just luck of the draw and nothing you've done is going to affect your chances. Upgrades are usually given due to room availability and resort need, not because you did or did not make a request.

We've made requests and not made requests and have only once gotten an upgrade in all our trips. Our one upgrade was from garden view to lagoon view, and I think it had more to do with lagoon view rooms going unsold than anything else. We had a building and upper floor request on that reservation, btw.

Even though it seems, due to reports here on the DIS, that everyone is getting upgraded, that is just not the case. Upgrades are very rare, so I wouldn't change my cleaning request just so you might get an upgrade!

Check-in for cleaning requests have varied in times for us from early to late. We would never waiver from a clean room for an upgrade. It would be nice if they upgraded us prior to cleaning the room--we could hope!

How much does a VIP cleaning cost? Can one request this for reservations using points?

The VIP cleaning service doesn't cost extra. It made a HUGE difference in our stay at the Pop 2 weeks ago. My son has severe allergies, to the point that his eyes will swell shut, and he can't breathe through his nose. Dust mites are the culprit, and hotel rooms and their pillows are dust mite heaven. Before, I would bring Fabreeze Allergy spray and mist the room. We bring our own pillows. It made some impact, but not much. The VIP cleaning service made our vacation so much better. He was able to wear his contacts, sleep peacefully, and didn't keep me up snoring! The room didn't have the bleach smell, it just smelled clean. We were also in a newly refurbished room. We had the best Disney vacation because of this service, and we will stay longer at Disney next visit because of the cleaning service.
I brought a note from the doctor in the event one was needed documenting his severe allergies. The check in cast member never asked for it.

Requesting a cleaning for a medical need is not the same as requesting a free upgrade. I request the cleaning for my children because it is warranted and I take the room I am given. When I make the cleaning request I also explain why and it is noted on my ressie. Disney is awesome when it comes to accomadating children with special needs, whatever they may be. Please, take caution for your child and ask for the cleaning and state why. For my own peace of mind I also take Lysol wipes and clean the TV remote. I am a worry wart about germs and I can admit it.
Have an awesome trip!

Last time we were at WDW my husband became VERY ill. Almost to the point that we couldn't return home on our scheduled departure day. The only reason we did go home is because the hotel had no availability to extend our stay and we would have had to pack everything up anyway to move hotels. I honestly think it was swine flu - my husband has never been that sick, and we had to call a doctor to come to our room because he was too weak to go to the urgent care center. Our two children and I also got sick but, thankfully, only after we got home. I can't be sure but it could have been something in the room that made us all sick - something wasn't cleaned enough or disinfected. I really want to make sure this doesn't happen again, and although you can never guarantee that you won't get sick on vacation, I'm willing to do whatever is in my power to keep it from happening. I'm already packing lots of hand sanitizer and wipes to keep the germs at a minimum. My question is - can I request a VIP cleaning for our room even though we don't have any medical reason for it? We don't have asthma but I think the circulated air, dust and other things that aren't normally cleaned (like the bed comforters) contributed to him getting sick.

That is a bit of overkill don't you think? This cleaning is very expensive and should only be used by those that have real medical need. It should never be requested lightly. For heavens sake the woman with the DD on Chemo is wondering if she should request it for a darn good life threatening need!!!!
If people who don't really need it request it, it will either not be offered anymore or there will be a charge or all room rates will go up to pay for it. Think long and hard before you request it if you really need it. By the way everyone was sick this winter with some really nasty viruses at Disney and just about everywhere else.

First of all, I didn't even know Disney offered a VIP cleaning for medical reasons. Second, before I even read this thread I had already spoken to several cast members about having a more thorough cleaning done because of the severity of my husband's illness last time, and not one of them mentioned that it's only for those with medical needs. I'm talking about having the comforters cleaned or at least changed and using disinfectants when they clean the room. I'm not asking for hypoallergenic cleaners, carpet and drape cleaning, etc. I don't see the harm in asking the question and honestly, I would be more than willing to pay for a better cleaning if it meant that we wouldn't get sick on our vacation. I meant no disrespect to those who DO have a medical need and I think it's wonderful that Disney is willing and able to accommodate them. I personally don't know what is included in a VIP cleaning and I know that we don't need a complete overhaul of the room like others may, but I still don't see the problem in asking for clean comforters and disinfectants to be used. Especially with all of the flu germs going around this season.

VIP is an extensive cleaning that locks you into your room and takes extensive time to perform. I have read somewhere here on DIS that it can take 4 hours to do. For this reason, I did not ask for the VIP cleaning on our last trip. I figured that my skin allergies would be okay and that there were people that needed it more than I did. Boy, was I wrong! I blistered from the detergent that they use. This time, I will have to ask for the VIP cleaning. So, from those of us that do need it, please don't ask for it unless you have a medical need. Ask for them to bring up clean comforters when you get to your room and bring your own clorox wipes. Chances are that you and your family got sick out in the parks or at Walmart before you left. The most likely spot is standing in line.

Well, it's good to know that Disney offers VIP cleaning for medical reasons in any case. My uncle as Leukemia as well and is going down to WDW with us at the end of the month. I'm going to let him know about this and maybe he'll choose to request it for himself. If it were my child I would most definitely ask for it if they had a very bad allergy or was on chemotherapy. I'm sure Disney is more than happy to help people who need a little extra care to make sure they have a magical vacation. :tinker:

From everything I have been told, VIP is for medical reasons. People who with out the VIP would not be able to vacation.

It is not a "choice" it is a true "need".

If you want clean comforters, you can request those when you check in. Once you get to your room call housekeeping.

I have never heard of this. My daughter, 6, has asthma and terrible skin allergies. In our house I can only use free/clear detergents and cleaning products. Is that what they use for the cleaning?

Just to clarify, and I am sorry that this may be taking us down the wrong road, but we don't get clean comforters upon check-in? Isn't this a given when people vacate a room, that newly cleaned comforters get put onto the bed?

Wow, in all my research and reading here, I never knew about the VIP cleaning! I have been quite concerned about DS (15) coming with us on this trip because like the OP's family, he has very severe athsma and allergies. Luckily he doesn't have skin allergies so the detergents wouldn't bother him, but he is basically allergic to EVERYTHING inhaled. He'll have his meds of course, but this service could really improve the air quality in our room. We've travelled extensively so I guess by now he's just sort of used to hotel rooms but I know he's been uncomfortable in the past.

I guess you learn something new every day!

I have had a mild to severe case of Hives that has developed over the past year, I carry an epi pen everywhere i go and I am very allergic to soaps, cleaners and detergants....on that note does that mean I could request a VIP cleaning? It would save me from an extra pd suitcase on the plan if I dont have to pack my own sheets and towels?
