We've just paid the outstanding balance for our villa this August. The owners, who have been really helpful, have sent me the information about where you gets keys etc. Amongst it was an interesting bit about the air con. Basically it says that it's set to 75 degrees, and can't be altered.
Now usually you can change the temp, just like you can at home. Has anyone else had experience of a villa where they had set it to something and you had no control over it.
Personally I think 75 degrees is too warm, I like it cool!

I know the villa we stayed in last year was set at 70 or 75, and we couldn't change it. That was in february - and it felt not bad, sometimes even warmer than was outside.

I asked my DH about this - he is an air condtioning engineer, and he said that when we go in the hot summer, when you go into the villa and it is set at 75, it will feel cool, because outside is so much hotter.
I'm not sure about the villa for our trip next week, I think I'll ask though!

I know that the a/c automatically switched off when the patio doors to the pool area were open, to prevent if from overworking.

I think if I could change it I'd have it around 55.......and we'd need winter woollies inside!!!!

:p

I keep ours at around 70 in the summer. Each house is going to be different because of varying degrees of insulation. You'll just have to wait and see.

Thanks for the replies. I can't log in at home at the moment, goodness knows why!
The villa owners have got back to me and they've said that if it's too warm the management company (who live 1 minute away round the corner) will come and set it to what I want. That's a big relief. I was dreading spending almost a month in a roasting villa!!!

When we rented a villa it was set at 75 and wouldn't go any lower (it was a wall mounted console like we have at home), so I removed the front of it and found a screw in the wall stopping the lever from going any lower so I just removed the screw and lowered the temperature and put the screw back in place when we left. Hope this helps!

many villa owners prevent you from changing the air con temp because visitors often set it to the lowest it can go and then leave it running permanently and this causes it to break and is then expensive to fix

There are 2 reasons why homeowners set the air con temp, first is that you would be amazed how many people set the aircon for 70 degrees and then leave the doors and windows open!! The second is something to do with the outside air tem being 15 degrees more than inside (I actually do not understand this one myself I leave it to the management company) Anyway both of these cause the air con unit to stay on for prolonged periods of time, when this happens, apart from the astronomically high electric bill the owner will get, the unit can "freeze" up, (it apparently looks like a great big ice lolly when it happens) and breaks. we do not "set" ours but find that 72-75 is comfortable.

A lot of owners will have something about the air conditioning in their terms and conditions which may state that if you tamper with the controls and the unit does freeze you may be liable.the same goes for the pool heater so be warned.

I suppose we will just have to wait and see what it's like...
I remember in the past seeing notices saying do not set it below a certain temperature, and in fact we found that if you did set it low, it just couldn't get below 70 anyway. I just thought 75 seemed a bit warm, although I realise it'll seem coolish compared to outside in August!

try getting out of the pool and then walking straight into the villa

then you'll appreciate just how cold 75 degrees feels

;)

We recommend our guests to set the aircon to about 76/77 degrees. It can be set lower but to my mind (and body) its too cold for comfort. I prefer it at 78 degees. Any colder than that and it feels too cold for us.

Coming from the UK, who wants 55 degrees? Are you mad. I go to Florida for the heat!!!!!!!

Yes, our terms and conditions warn guests that if they freeze the system up the will be billed for repairs.

As for pool heating, again its a personal thing. I understand the pool heat shouldn't be set above 85 degrees on the pool chemicals "boil off" or something. Personally we like it at about 88 - 89 degrees. Any more and you might as well go in and have a hot bath. Its just not refreshing!
