Vibration on Fantasy ?

Thanks "disdel" for clarifying that....it was exactly my intention in the original query....vibration/not movement. We expect ship movement but constant vibration is another thing all together and that is what I had heard about on Fantasy.

This worries me. We will be on the Fantasy in an aft room (10158) at the end of this month. I already am aware of the noise from the chairs being moved are around at Cabanas but a constant vibration is new to me.

I read it was only when backing up into ports not constant. Anyone on this board stayed in 10158 and care to comment on vibrations?

We were aft deck 8. We only felt it on one day and believe it was related to when the ship needed to cruise at a higher speed to cover more distance on the last sea day. It was more of an annoyance than anything that would make you sea sick.

I felt tons of movement and vibration on the Fantasy, we were aft. No one else in our room did. Guess it just depends on how sensitive you are to movement. Having said that, I never did get sick.

It looks like many posters are interchanging vibration and ship's motion. The motions can be negligible or wild, for the reasons Skip lists. But the vibration issue definitely exists, at least IMHO.

Skipper, we were just aboard FANTASY (6670) for the 12/28 New Year's Eve cruise, and then a week later on DREAM (6690). Both cabins aft, Deck 6. On FANTASY, there was a definite consistent mechanical vibration. An educated guess tells me it was running gear related. There was no similar vibration in virtually the same location aboard DREAM. I had commented about it to DW while on FANTASY, and so we were both attuned to it when we were on DREAM.

I thought I had read elsewhere that there is a possible prop/shaft/rudder issue on FANTASY, which, given their sister ship status, makes sense. Hope someone else can confirm, I don't recall where I heard that, it may have even been from staff aboard DREAM.

You are right sea, wind current mostly affect vessel motion issues, but they can also effect or set up a vibration, connected to the vessel motions.

One especially bad possible cause is the depth of water under the keel and currents. By restricting/changing water flow under and around/past the vessel vibrations can occur, usually amplified by the prop RPM and rubbers.

They are all inter connected.

I have been on the Fantasy twice. I Love to roam the ship and never felt a vibration that was unusual to any vessel.

The bottom line is that if your going to sea, you have to expect the vessel to rock and roll sometimes and there is going to be occasional vibrations. These don't usually bother most passengers.

Never had cruised until sailing on Dream a couple of years ago (have cruised twice on her now) and was surprised at how smooth it was except for getting in and out of Port Canaveral . After booking a longer voyage on Fantasy, I started to see complaints about this vibration issues....only on Fantasy...so was curious as to the difference in ships. I still have not seen anything in that regard to the other ships but there have been several responses here that indicate others have indeed felt this sensation solely on Fantasy, and this from folks with more cruising experience than I. It won't keep me from enjoying the cruise but I am motion sensitive, take Bonine religiously, and was just needing to know what to expect. Thank you and everyone else for the replies.

I would guess that since the Fantasy does seven day cruises, it has farther to travel and thus has to increase speed more frequently than the Dream, which does only four day cruises. Higher speed would lead to more vibration. We felt it on the Magic when the ship was traveling faster the first and last days.

We had a really rough night returning from CC to PC last January. We left CC well over 2 hours late due to a medical issue on the island and had to sail into a front that was moving Sputh right at us. We were basically sailing wide open into the wind to try to make Port on time, but the Carnival ship due to dock the same morning beat us to the channel. You can only fit one ship in the channel at any given time so we had to wait for them to get through.
When we first got off the ship I really thought that the rough ride could have been design related but the more I thought about it the more it made sense that it was circumstantial-you had almost three fewer hours to cover the 225 nautical miles and the wind was fighting us the whole way. This was also not that long after the Sandy sailing so that was weighing on my mind a little.
The rest of the trip (Eastern) was not bad given the time of the year. There was a little vibration that was most noticeable in AP and the Theater.
We are sailing again four weeks from today on Fantasy (yay us!) so hopefully with the difference in season we won't have another night like that last night.

I am very sensitive to motion sickness as well but there's a difference between movement with swells and vibrations. We were deck 6 aft on the Fantasy. The vibrations would kick in when the ship went at faster speeds. There was enough vibration that our room would rattle. DH and the kids slept through it, but DH did acknowledge that it was annoying. I did, at times, have a hard time sleeping. I did write a complaint

I did write a complaint at the urging of a CM. I would still cruise again. The trip itself outweighed the annoying vibrations in the room. Thanks goodness it wasn't like that the entire time.

This is what I have been thinking. I am prone to motion sickness. The rocking of the ship bothered me a bit (and I was taking Bonine). On the Dream I didn't really notice much vibration, but it's something that I think would not make me sick anyway. It might be annoying, but not motion sickness inducing.

We sailed the Fantasy Oct '13, deck 12 forward. Noticed this on two occasions: first, if the ship was really moving, above 20.5kts, it was noticeable but not bad in our room. Second, in AP, leaving PC, I got positively green when the engines fired up. Aft and lower levels was the worst for me. I've sailed on the Dream and eaten in AP and never noticed it.

Sailed the Fantasy last summer and definitely did notice a vibration in our room the first two nights… was on the Dream in 2011 and there was no vibration. Both times we were on the 9th deck midship.

Should add that the seas seemed quite calm--that of course might make a big difference, but theres no way to be certain of calm water each and every trip.

We felt very little vibration--certainly no more than anyone might expect on a ship in the water!

But just for normal ship vibration--barely noticed it.

That's the room we had for 14 nights and didn't feel a thing.

Our first cruise was on RC. Our cabin was on the 19th floor aft. Talk about rocking! Something was absolutely wrong with the ship stabilizer's on that ship. Other cruiser's were talking about it.

Fantasy was SMOOTH!

I was on the same sailing and we had a veranda and an inside room on deck 8 aft... and I can definitely say there was vibration. Not the motions you expect when sailing like the rolling waves or side to side motion there was a definite vibration feeling that was most noticeable when the ship was moving faster... it was more noticeable in the inside stateroom where the bed would have a noticeable vibration. But basically anywhere aft, didn't really feel it mid ship or forward.

When dining in Palo for brunch we were right next to the wine rack near the entry and you could see and hear the vibration effect the wine bottles with the glass noise, but the ship was quite smooth at the time in terms of motion... In Cabanas you would hear the metal in the roof rattle again not motion but like a constant tapping...

It's nothing that will get someone sick, it feels like you're standing on a foot messager. Wouldn't say it was so bad since we re booked the fantasy again but for those who are sensitive to it I would look to booking midship or forward.... it seemed to go all decks so being higher or lower didn't make a difference

I posted that the extreme vibration in AP the first night during early seating made my DH ill. It did feel totally different from the normal motion. He has never felt ill on our other cruises, however, even with 20+ foot swells on a few of them. This vibration was constant and strong and I was surprised that it affected him that way. It was on the maiden voyage, so perhaps it has been adjusted since then. He was fine on our cruise last year and we had the same rotation.

Just got off the Fantasy on Saturday and experienced this vibration. Tonka understand completely what you are describing but this felt more like something was unbalanced. Almost felt like an unbalanced prop. Happened only when at 20 plus knots and it wasn't constant more like cyclical on for 5 seconds off for 3 seconds type on vibration. The did have a dive team (salvage divers) under the ship at Castaway in the area where the props would... Could be a complete coincidence or normal maint. Who knows!!
