Vent: people need to learn how to spell, or comprehend, or something

There's a post on another forum complaining about profanity in the Disney online reservation security words they experienced - except that one word was entirely different from what they comprehended, and while the two together might be considered provocative, either alone is, well, just a word.

The two words: Seeman (proper name, not the common noun the person apparently thought), and twelve-inch. That first word has some letters in common with the material the poster thought it was, but it's not that word. And none of the three words is profane. I'm sure. I was able to type the alternate word and it didn't get blocked.

My point - and I do have one - if the correct spelling had been known up front, there would have been no issue. The differences would have been obvious.

I read that thread after it was locked. When the "vulgar" words were finally posted, I couldn't help but laugh my head off. There isn't anything offensive about those words.

It seems some people's minds have taken up permanent residence in the gutter, and are just waiting for possible tidbits like this to drop in from time to time.



Perhaps I'm extremely naive, but I can't see that I would have ever considered that to be crude/obscene/inappropriate.

I agree, lol. I've "failed" a few of those validations because I typed the "word" CORRECTLY when they deliberately misspelled it.

I wonder if "SEAMAN" (which is a valid word meaning a sailor) would have set off the censormatic for the person as well?

PS to Kies99 - thank your friend for me. Having grown up with a lot of Coast Guard families, I definitely appreciate the work CG staff does for all of us, most of which is unsung. I didn't read your post first, but it is an appropriate last name, lol.

There is a lot of "text speech" on internet forums and unfortunately that has led to horrible spelling and grammar. I was appalled at my teenage cousin's writing skills.

For any teenagers lurking: we are actually firing someone based partially on her inability to write coherent business emails and documents. Spelling and grammar do still matter!

There's someone on several boards I frequent (non-Disney) who claims to be from the Middle East. The thing is that she writes EVERY POST in "IM Speak." I just don't understand how you can make the jump from being fluent in another language (english) to being able to write in code using that language.

Recently, she joined a board that I moderate. She posted something like "B4 i go 2 bd lt me tll u ..." I sent her a pm asking her to stop writing that way. She replied with "thx 4 lettg me no. ill try 2 rmbr tht." ROFLOL

Some people just don't realize that text speech gets them nowhere... now phones come with full keyboards (blackberry) where one can type out full words with no ill effects. I certainly don't type like that when I send IMs to a friend of mine although I'll tease him about the occasional typo that turns out to be hilarious....

Before this turns into a bashing thread for people who don't spell well - or has it already - please consider that certain learning disabilities cause spelling difficulties. I'm not suggesting that was the problem in the "vulgar" post, however, spelling of words like "ore" or "dining/dinning" are classic misspellings for those of us with learning disabilities. It is hurtful when people are closed minded and critcal about something we try very hard at, but sometimes fail. The frustration one feels when one wants to communication effectively but can't without a huge effort is tremendous

Heh... well unless I see a screen shot of those word (esp twelve-inch) I stand on the side that I dont believe that poster saw the words twelve-inch let alone WITH the other word they misread.

I tend to agree with you...I've never seen one of those programs give a hyphenated word as part of the required "key words".

Whoever thought those words were "inappropriate" is really reading WAAAAAY too much into it. Words are words...but CONTEXT is also important.
