The wife and i were watching The Amazing Race last night, they were in Venice, Italy and had to sing a song on a Venetian boat. I asked my wife, why in the world does Epcot not have these in the Italy pavilion? It just blows my mind how they don't.

This would be a home run by Disney. A dark ride though Italy via a boat.

These are the types of attractions in World Showcase I could get behind.

There are/were quite a few ride ideas (regardless of IP) that seemed like no-brainers to put in World Showcase. It all comes down to the $$$$$$$$$

I just found this on wiki, i guess i didn't realize there was a "Phase 2" that was cancelled.

The original plans for the pavilion called for an expansion that would be built in Epcot's "Phase II" of construction, thus leaving a wall with nothing behind it at the rear of the pavilion. The expansion would have included a gondola dark ride and a Roman ruins walk-through. When "Phase II" was canceled, the pavilion was left incomplete.

Don't forget the Mt. Fuji roller-coaster that was supposed to go in the Japan Pavilion.

Also, side note, based on our trackers it seems like we are going to be in Disney at the same time. Feel free to stop by Sea Breeze Point on June 27th if you wanna see a wedding.

We're arriving July 1st, cannot get here fast enough.

They were planned and were suppose to be similar to the canoes over at Disneyland but never happened. That is why there is gondola at the bottom in Italy and the walk way there goes all the way to the water. When it was scrapped they put one of the boats at the bottom permanently and then build a fence around where you would have loaded/unloaded.

I agree! This is a wonderful idea! I think that there should be more rides in WS. I don't like that they took out Maelstrom, but cultural attractions are exactly what EPCOT needs!

They just have to figure how to make it an add-on experience. 15 minute gondola rides at the Venetian in Vegas are $58 per person.

1) Remember, Disney does not pay for Epcot lands, countries do.
2) OK, actually companies and tourist bureaus pay for the exhibit (Morocco is the ONLY country-sponsored pavilion).
3) So, WDW needs to find sources of new sponsors for payment.
4) In fact, when a company pulls out of sponsorship, the exhibit-ride-etc really suffers in quality.
. . . Examples: . . . Spaceship Earth . . . Innovations . . . The Land . . . Imagination

NOTE: During the late 1990's and early 2000's several companies pulled out of sponsorship. Advertising AT the parks through sponsorship does not carry the same cache as it once did.

This is interesting. Doesn't Disney have enough cash to do things on they're own??

That's kinda a half truth, all the original companies they built themselves and the new third parties operate it. Morocco is obviously an outlier and I'm not sure about Norway but they pony up the building cost historically

1) Why pay for it, if you can get others to pay for it? **
2) This goes for MANY exhibits/activities at WDW and pavilions in Epcot
. . . ALL maps used to be fully paid by Kodak (until Kodak went bankrupt)
. . . ALL fountain Coke products are supplied FREE by Coca-Cola

** As an example, Disney-Tokyo and Disney-Seas are famous and make LOTS AND LOTS of money. They are owned by OLC (Oriental Land Company). Disney gets royalties and consulting fees.

This might be more a chicken/egg kind of thing but I always thought the gondolas were there to maintain the Venice theme of the Italy Pavilion.

Exactly! I've always been baffled by this. They sure charge us enough money to pay for it hundreds of times over! I feel like I alone could have built that ride! lol I always felt like Disney is the worst for the mindset of "We're Disney and we don't have to put any effort into anything because people will come anyway."....and we do. I've always thought they dropped the ball big time on WS. Every pavilion should have a ride. Epcot is a theme park! I've been twenty something times and quite frankly I've gotten bored with the same old shops in WS. I bought what I wanted from them my first few trips and I don't neeeeed anymore overpriced Moroccan trinkets that I can get at Earthbound. Epcot would be a 3 day park for me if there were a ride in every pavilion and FW was filled with rides instead of empty or defunct rides that no one enjoys. That park has THEE best vibe of all of the parks yet gets the least amount of love. It's just a place for festivals these days. Makes me so sad. If done right, Epcot alone could kill Universal IMO.

I would love to see a boat ride in Italy. They've definitely got enough space for it. I just don't think they will, because the attraction wouldn't sell enough overpriced t-shirts and stuffed animals.

I just want to add plot #1 is the frozen meet and greet so there are only 7 plots now.
