Wife and I will be going to Vegas in October to see the Indy car race and need help? I would like to stay on the strip, but have no idea on where to stay. I want to have a nice time but not go broke doing so. Thanks

We like The Flamingo for location, but I think Bally's is good for location and price too. Check out Cheapo Vegas. They have a good run down of all the places to stay and they usually have a list of what the good specials are. HTH

ETA-We have some friends that really love the Monte Carlo. You can usually find some good prices for there. We've never stayed there, but have been inside and I wouldn't hesitate to stay there either.

I wouldn't stay at Circus Circus, Stratosphere, or Riviera. I don't like that end of the strip. It's pretty seedy. JMHO

I love priceline or hotwire for Vegas as we always get 5* hotels for under $125/night. Be sure to check out betterbidding.com first. But last time we got a better deal booking airfare and hotel thru expedia. We stayed at the Aria for a week and flew from Canada for $1500 which was better than any other deal we could get for Nascar week.

It really depends on what you will be doing (not sure where the Indy race is held) and your transportation, as well as your budget.

We've always had decent accommodations (frequently much better than decent!) at Flamingo (stayed there a dozen times or so for conventions/conferences), Bally's, Monte Carlo and Mirage. Excalibur has been very good and not so good--last time we stayed there the entire ground floor became a very loud club at night. Not my style! Rooms were okay though. Just be sure to book a refurbished room--the old ones are very tired.

Flamingo, Bally's and Mirage are mid-strip. Excalibur is south (only Luxor and Mandalay Bay are farther south); Monte Carlo is just a bit north of Excalibur (same side of the strip).

Apart from The Venetian and Wynn resorts, most of the properties on the Strip are owned/operated by MGM-Mirage (may have changed the name, but MGM will get you there) or Caesars. Not precisely true, but the ownership/operations have consolidated from half a dozen or so to the two major management companies--they can control the rates much better.

You also can check out the options for downtown Las Vegas (Fremont Street area). We don't stay there (BFF and I), as we're too middle-aged females, but many people we know do enjoy it. If you stay or visit Fremont Street, be sure to have breakfast at the coffee shop at the Golden Gate Hotel & Casino located at 1 Fremont Street. It's served 24 hours a day. It's our favourite place for pancakes--and everything else we have tried has been good, as well!

Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Bureau is a good site for general information about the area and less biased toward specific resorts, for the most part.

If you don't particularly want to stay on the Strip or at a casino resort, most of the major chains are represented in the Las Vegas area, with varying levels of service and condition. Check the websites for your favourite chains, then tripadvisor.com or your favourite website for comments and mapquest.com for location.

October can be a lovely time to visit the Las Vegas area. It is high desert, so days tend to be quite warm (sunscreen, sunglasses and hats/caps, please!), but evenings are a bit cooler than the low desert where I live. The weather can be a bit variable, so prepare to layer clothing, if necessary.

When I went I went in October and it was soooo hot!!!!!! I went about 7 years ago and they had a heat wave that they hadn't ever experienced in October. Just my luck:lmao:
Anyways, I stayed at the Luxor and loved, loved, loved it! However, it is more at the end of the strip. I had friends stay at Paris and at Caesars and their location was better and nice hotels. But I was very happy with where I stayed and you can always take a taxi to the center if need be, or bus or I think they have the tram now??

I love the Paris. Just across from the Belagio and it's the perfect location mid-strip, IMO. Also their buffet restaurant has the BEST breakfast buffet, they have some really nice shops, and the rooms are nice.

We LOVE the Paris breakfast buffet. They have fresh crepes made to order that are SO good!

We stayed at the Bellagio for our anniversary in March and got a great rate for 4 nights since that is a shoulder season. I would stay there over and over again for the location and service, but only when the rates are good!

When we went in May, we got a great deal on a room at the Trump International for 3 nights on Last Minute Travel. I found it to be a beautiful hotel with great service, but it's location isn't my favorite. It's just north of the Fashion Show Mall and is 1/2 block off the strip. I don't think we'd stay there again since we like to be mid-strip.

I prefer staying at Paris or Caeser's Palace but they can get pricey! First off, sign up for Total Rewards and then look for their special discounted rates. You can compare the hotels above with about 5 others on the strip. I have found the best rates at the Flamingo. I've stayed for $39/$59 (weekday/weekend) with the total rewards rate (and I don't gamble much, I just signed up for the card)!! The rooms are adequate and clean and the pool is amazing! You are smack dab in the middle of the strip and it's a good hotel. If you want something more luxurious, then stay at Paris or Caeser's or even Bellagio - but they will run higher. Good luck!

total rewards is the way to go. i just booked part of my trip with bally's. we were shopping around on various travel sites and my friend said she had some offers for Las Vegas with her card. when she looked up the rates we found it was cheaper than the cheap hotels with special rates on orbitz/expedia. we also have a 72 hours cancellation policy if we find something better/cheaper, plus there are no resort fees. i have never been to vegas but my friend said bally's is a great location and gives you access to paris and other resorts since they are all bally's.

we do gamble in AC on occasion, so the rate we got with the card may factor that in but hey it never hurts.

the grand canyon hotels are killing me, i don't think there is a way to get those cheap.

We stayed at NY, NY which is clean, and on the cheap side compared to many of the hotels on the strip. It is at the end of the strip though, if you want to be in the middle I would check out Paris.
