Thanks so much! It's comforting to see the buildings still standing, but I can now see why it will take a while to get things back in shape.

What is the collapsed structure in the second picture?

Thanks for posting the pictures. I can't believe how much sand was lost, once you see the picture of the walkway to the beach! (VB is our home resort - scheduled to be back there July 2005).

Thanks very much for the pics, Mike.

It's so sad....

Where was the tide when you took that picture of the ramp?

I believe it's what left of the building(s) on the Wabasso public beach. IIRC, there was a picnic shelter, guard shack and building containing public restrooms in that location as well as a stairway down to the beach.

madcoco - Thanks for the pictures.

Best wishes -

Thanks for posting those pics...your updates have been so valuable! I am actually amazed at how well the resort withstood this monster storm. The beach erosion is really bad....can anyone tell me approx. how many feet of beach were lost due to the two storms? We've never been to the resort and I can't recall from pics how far the beach extended in relation to the walkway. Thanks.

We are still planning to visit VB in April '05.

great pictures!

thank you so much.

I really had expected no beach at all - VB never had a big one.

so is DVB still be opened at the end of Oct?

you are so nice to do this for us.

Thanks!! Any further updates or information is greatly appreciated!! Keeping my fingers crossed for an 11/20 arrival !

I read in another post about the beach erosion; maybe it was a news article. I think it is approximately 25 feet.

I wish so much that we lived close, I'd be a volunteer to shovel sand.

Looking forward to going home next June.

Thanx for the spy photos, Mike. That's exactly what I needed in order to get a feel for the condition of the resort.
Actually, I think the resort looks pretty good, considering some of the other local structures...

AmyBeth - which week in April? We'll be there April 3-8.

:wave2: We're going the last week in April, although it is our Spring Break here as well. It seems that with the Easter Holiday so early this year, the Spring Break weeks seem to be everywhere from early March until late April. I think that is good news for everyone, since the crowds should be fairly well dispersed throughout at the time period :smooth: . Too bad, though, it would have been nice to set up a "meet" with you and your family. Our children look to be about the same age!!! :teeth: .

Wow, amazing that the resort stood up so well but the beach looks so different. I thought I remembered that there was dunes up around that building on the boardwalk out to the beach. I remember the kids showering off there on our way back from the beach and there being heavy foliage all around that area. Looks like a lot of the dunes are gone. :(

In the photo of the walkway, the water and sand have actually pushed the beach closer in to the resort. The vegetation used to come out well past the hut built into the walkway, almost to where the steps started, and now it has been pushed well back towards the resort.

I always thought they did a good job of leaving the natural vegetation and building back from the beach like they did. In my opinion, that saved the resort from catastrophic damage.

We are hoping to be there in early November and will report as soon as we return to Tampa. If the resort has not re-opened by then, we are considerring going to Sanibel Island, as I know the places that are open there would appreciate some business.

Wow. :( I guess it isn't as bad as it could have been.. but not great either.

VB is my home resort, but I've yet to visit. Now I'm kind of glad because when I go in April, I won't have anything to compare it to!

Thanks so much for posting the pictures...

I cant beleive how much of the beach is gone.... sad.

I agree the dunes that Disney built up and landscaped heavily, helped prevent more damage.

Thanks for the pics. At first glance it looks great considering (still standing is great), but second look a little harder at every little detail, you can see there is lots of damage. I wonder what the inside looked like. I wonder if they will make some attempts at some longer term preventive measures (what ever that may be) for the next season. Are they letting anyone in now on A1A or still just residents only? We fly into Melbourne next weekend and it's tempting to take a peek.
