Vaxxed and traveling the next day. How bad of an idea?

I got Pfizer and had no reaction to either shot, but I’m glad I didn‘t plan anything the next day just in case I did have a reaction.

Can the trip be postponed last minute (get up Thursday and not feeling good)? If yes, get your shot, see how you're feeling, then make a decision. If no...
Can the trip be postponed now (business? Pleasure? Can you reschedule)? If yes, I'd probably postpone the trip. If no...
Postpone the shot.

Honestly I would go. If covid has taught me anything it's to live life, it feels like a year was stolen from us all, I say go for it. Obviously you won't be fully protected until two weeks after the shot, so you should still take precautions on the trip like wearing a mask, lots of hand washing/sanitizing and making sure to social distance and not be in crowds of people.

As far as side effects, I know 5 people who got J&J and none of them had more than a sore arm. If you have side effects, you should have a plan like maybe leaving later or building in a "rest day."

I'd probably postpone the vaccine until I returned, or postpone the trip a for a few days after.
I only know one person who had the J&J vaccine, she's in her early 20's healthy and was knocked out with flu like symptoms later that night and all the next day.
Of course everyone is different and you may have no side effects. If it were me I would err on the side of caution.

You just don't know how you are going to react to the vaccine. They say the younger and more robust the immune system the more likely you are to have side effects. You stated you have a good immune system so that is a concern.

I had Pfizer so it isn't the same as J&J. However, I will say I thought I was doing just fine, had the shot for over 12 hours, and BAM! 30 minutes later it felt like I was being hit by a Mack truck. The reaction wasn't instantly after the shot, but the onset of feeling wretched happens fast. That is true for several of my family members/friends which had onset of reactions within 4 hours all the way up to 24 hours after the shot. That would be horrible to have it hit you when driving, esp if you couldn't pull over and rest.

It is a risk. If you could wait a day that is what I would do.

In keeping with covid discussion must stay on track pertaining to travel, I am planning a J&J vaccine this Thursday. I have auto travel plans the next late morning. Is this foolish?

I know several folks my age who got this vax and had no reaction at all.

I'm hoping I can still do my travel plans, even if I'm a bit fatigued but I'm curious what others think. I'm 60, healthy, strong and rarely sick. I have a strong immune system and recover quickly.
I wouldn't do it just because you won't be protected by the vaccine the next day. It takes a few weeks to become immune.

I don't know if that would be a concern here, because the alternative would seem to be traveling anyways, but postponing getting the vaccination.

Not sure how much of this is still happening, but way back when, there were some states that wanted to encourage people to travel to their states by offering visitors a COVID-19 vaccination back when it might have been hard to get the shots in some states. I'm sure that most states are allowing visitors that option, but probably not where it's an incentive.

DS got the J& J was was really sick the next day. Lasted for about 24 hours. Flu-like symptoms, high fever, vomiting.

I guess I'm in the camp of OP, how long ago was the trip planned and why get the shot the day before. I guess if I was that concerned getting vaxxed anyway I would have easily done it two weeks before your trip. Good luck with it. :goodvibes:

I can't get it today because I have to take my 90 yr old parents to the doctor tomorrow and it can't be changed. Ugh.
Is the drive with your parents very far? I don't know anyone who was so unwell from the vaccine that they couldn't drive short drive or deal with small outings, the people who lay low do so for comfort not necessity sort of like a hangover and that was the mRNA. People I know who got J&J were uneventful.

I'd encourage you to get the shot this evening, you are so much better off feeling a little icky than getting sick especially if you are traveling. Some studies show that the vaccines can help your body get a jump start even if infection is under the two week threshold for optimum results.

If it were me I'd wait at least 24 - 48 hours before traveling just in case of a reaction. Would suck to be on the road when they hit.

I've been on a trip where I got sick, so I'm not all that concerned. I didn't have the J&J vaccine, but the usual typical symptoms aren't usually enough that anyone can't function if they have to.

I had coworkers who had to be fairly close to a toilet (or bucket) for about 24 hours after their vaccine. I wouldn't chance it, myself.

I've been like that on vacation, so I figure it's not all that unusual.

You’re not fully protected until 2 weeks after your vaccine. You’re only getting the one vaccine anyway, plus traveling the next day so you’re basically not going to be covered at all. Not a good idea especially with the Delta variant now.

But it’s not fun on a plane when you can’t always leave your seat. DH was so sick at a soccer tournament the day after his second shot that he just laid down flat on his back and then crashed at the hotel, he felt like he couldn’t move.

DH got his second Pfizer shot the day before we were flying to Florida. We just crossed our fingers and hoped for the best! Luckily, he had zero side effects.

I know 6 people that got the J&J vaccine and every one of them seemed to have significant symptoms. Two of them (one a 42 y/o man and the other a 21 y/o girl) got 105 degree temps overnight. They were recoverig the next day. Everyone else had low-grade fevers and aches for about 24 hours.
