Vacations other than Disney?

Disney is a must for us every year. But I usually throw in a weeks vacation somewhere else also. This year it is Myrtle Beach. And since I live 15 minutes from Ocean City , MD, And My entire family lives 15 minutes from Ocean City, NJ, we will be spending alot of weekends at both places this summer.

Visiting Civil War battlefields is very beautiful and relaxing, believe it or not. Being from the No. Va. area, I have alot of that nearby and it's wonderful.
I agree. I've been to Gettysburg, Antietam, and Lookout Mountain in Chatanooga. Antietam is my favorite though. There is something about it that just speaks to me. Its almost peaceful in a way. The land is beautiful. When we went in June of this year I just stood on Burnside Bridge and stared at Antietam Creek thinking about what happened there that September day in 1862 and what it looked like afterwarrds. Its hard to imagine the carnage when you see these places today. Gettysburg was amazing also. We're actually going back to Gettysburg at the end of April for my birthday trip because there was some things that we missed in June. All my friends think I'm nuts for going to battlefields, but there is something so moving about them. The monuments that have been built on these sites are spectacular. Some really important sculptors helped create some. I know the guy who did Mt. Rushmore did a couple of the monuments at Gettysburg. I can't remember right now which ones, but he did a couple of them. Sometime I want to go to the battlefields at Shiloh, TN and Vicksburg, MS, as well as the ones in Virginia. I find trips to the battlefields are a nice change of pace to Disney and theme parks in general. They are wonderful places to visit and can be a very moving experience.

 Hi I live close to NYC so we take some trips there. Some little trips around New England (Mystic CT) (Stockbridge Mass) ect. Some fun things here in Connecticut. Also we went to Cooperstown NY(Baseball HOF) It was a fun year in 2006. This year started off already with a trip Manhattan.(Museam) Bronx (Arthur Ave) and New Haven CT (Museam and Pepe's Pizza) There are so many great things right in your own backyard. Have fun:yay:

I keep telling the wife that when the son is older we are doing a Civil War battle tour. She loves the idea. When we don't do Disney we usually make the drive to San Antonio and visit attractions in that area.

I get the best of both worlds. DH likes to go to WDW every other year, as does DD and her family. Soooo, I go with each one every year! This year it's a trip with DD and DGDs 9&13. DH and I also take a vacation alone every year too. Last year we spent 2 weeks touring the Grand Canyon area....flew into Las Vegas (not a highlight for me) then rented a car and drove to Hoover Dam, Grand Canyon, Kayenta (Indian reservation), Lake Mead, Bryce Canyon and Zion National Park. A memorable trip to say the least! Other summers we have gone to Canada's maritime provinces, St. Thomas & St. John, Antigua, FL keys. And many motor trips - too many to name, all along the eastern seaboard as well as the midwestern states. We've been to countless museums and historical sites. Favorite museum is Ford Museum and Deerfield Village in Mich (easily two days!!). Favorite historical trip is a toss up between Sturbridge Village, MA and Williamsburg, VA. My next nonWDW trip to plan is out west. Flying into LAX and driving the Pacific coast to the Canadian coast - and continuing on the Alcan Hwy if funds hold out! :confused3

This is one of my favorite destinations as well. Though its The Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village in Dearborn, MI. ;) My sister and I have made it an annual tradition to go down on Memorial Day weekend for the Civil War Remembrance weekend at Greenfield Village. I've never actually been to the Henry Ford Museum portion since we prefer Greenfield Village. I think the Civil War weekend is probably the best of the whole year. Once we went down on New Years. It was fun, very, very cold though. Not a lot of people, which was nice, but none of the rides were running. The Susquehana Plantation, Firestone farmhouse, and Dagget Farmhouse are among my favorite buildings at Greenfield Village. There is also an Imax there, which is pretty cool.

Here is their website if anyone else is interested:

It is a very interesting place. Lots of things for children and very educational.

We are fortunate enough to have a "seasonal" place in Wisconsin that we use every weekend and sometimes weeks at a time from May 1 to Oct 15. Its one of those park model type homes, and we are in a campground so its fun. All the comforts of home. We are also fortunate that my in laws have a beach house in Monterey, CA that we use as well. But nothing like planning for a Disney trip!:)

Hi
We usually go to the shore (Wildwood NJ) every summer. This year in May, my DH has a business conference in Las Vegas, so we'll be going there. Can't wait since I've never been to Las Vegas. Also, because of his job, we've been to Sedona, the Grand Canyon, West Palm Beach, and a lot of other places including Orlando.

Great Smoky Mountains Park, TN
St. Louis, MO
Pochonos Mountains, PA
Denver, CO
San Antonio, TX
Blue Ridge Mountains, VA
Sanibel, FL
Ft Lauderdale, FL
Orlando, FL

That's about it.

DH and I camp in PA with his family for a week in July usually. Then we go to Ocean City, MD for a week in July with my family. In December we go hunting (just the two of us) for a week. Our WDW trip is the first of its kind. DH swears "one and done" but I think he'll be hooked. If that's the case, then I see us going back with his family in the near future and then with my family at some point. We've also been batting around the idea of going back to Banff (Canada) where we spent our honeymoon and then possibly to Yellowstone one year for Christmas.

I didn't know there was any other place to vacation except Disney, but since I have only been twice. My family just returned yesterday from a weekend trip to Savannah, Ga, where we ate at The Lady and Sons Restaurant (for those who may not know, this is Paula Deen's restaurant). We will be taking a trip to Chattanooga and Pigeon Forge in June for my birthday and my husband has yet to choose where he wants to go for his Birthday in August.
