Vacation package versus hotel only

due to cancellation penalties, could i book a hotel room only now for our october trip, and then in the last two weeks upgrade it to a vacation package so i can get the dining package.. thanks the info

When I called to switch from room-only to package, I was told that I need to cancel the room-only and book the package. I would have to wait for my refund, in that case. If you wait untinl the last minute, your resort choice may be sold out.

I was told to day when I made my room only ressie that I could add the DP later (up to 3 days prior?) and still retain my code discount.

I made my room reservation this past week and was told that I could turn it into a package later on as well. I am counting on this to be true and will be annoyed if it is not.
