UY Banking Points Question

Looking to buy into DVC. Figuring out best UY for me. I probably will take most trips in the foreseeable future in Feb thru May. Thinking of DEC UY. I understand that you have 8 months to choose to bank your points (I would have to bank by Jul 30th). Once you bank, can you still use your points in the current year (between Aug 1st and Nov 1st), or do you have to wait to use them in the following UY?

Banking and Borrowing are final transactions. Once the points are moved, they become the new years points and you can not use them in a different year.

:) Bill

Banking is a final transaction. Once you bank, those points may only be used in the year into which they were banked. They can't be "unbanked".

However, if you decide to go after you bank, but before the new use year begins, you can borrow points from the next use year. But those points will expire at the end of the current use year if they are not used, so before you borrow, you have to be quite sure you will take the trip.

I had that situation in 2008. I have an April use year. I banked my remaining 2008 points in June when I booked a reservation for April 2009. Then I decided in September to book a December trip to DL. So I borrowed April 2009 points.

OK thanks all, I totally understand now. I do usually like to avoid the really busy seasons (and the HOT FL Summmer since I'm a New England boy) , so my other option is early to mid fall. Maybe a Feb UY is better for me since it will give me until Sep to make a decision on banking. Thanks again!:thumbsup2

Just keep in mind even if you have not reached your banking deadline that the cancellation must be made at least 31 days before check-in date of the trip AND only points from the CURRENT Use Year allotment will be bankable ( the Current UY allotment are the points from the UY during which the trip would take place ) And if there is banked &/or borrowed points that are part of the reservation those points need to be re-used for a new reservation that would take place before your UY ends.

With a February UY you could cancel a trip that has a check-in date as late as October 31 on September 30 ( at least 31 days before check-in date ) & be able to bank the CURRENT Use Year points used in that reservation in that very same call; any banked &/or borrowed points in the reservation would need to be re-used in a new reservation that takes place before end of your UY (Jan 31) so that gives you approximately 3 months to do that.

Best wishes on your planning :goodvibes

Don't mean to hijack this thread, but I have a question similar to OP. My UY is Dec. I have a vacation booked for Oct. of this year. I will need to bank any unused points by July 31. Now my question is - I have 1 night waitlisted for a CL at AKV. Will I have to borrow from 2010 for the extra points if the waitlist comes through after I banked my extra points or is there some other option? TIA.

No, I believe that will be your only option if you bank the points before the WL comes through to borrow from next year. That is the drawback of traveling late in the UY, beyond your banking deadline.

Good luck!

Great points. For my profession, I typically have the hardest time travelling late Q4 and early in January. So if I cant get out by Late October, I'm done until February. So that's why Feb use year is best for me. Believe me, it would great to do some personal travel around the winter holidays. I hear Disney is a real treat during that time of year - but it just won't happen, at least until I retire. Until then, I'll live through the posts for folks who are there.

Similar to your climate comment, we almost never visit WDW in the summer. Fall, winter and spring are great. So we picked September for our UY. We have until April 30 to bank any excess points (not a problem so far!!!).

Thanks. We usually go in winter or spring, but this is an anniversary trip (10 years). It should be a big deal since it will only be a couple of points, the difference between Kadani standard and CL. And maybe out WL will come through before then.

Congratulations!! I agree, that sometimes, losing a few points to get something special is worth it.

Here is pixiedust to help that it comes through and you don't lose points!!!!
