Use Year/resale questions

Hi-
I am considering buying DVC resale. If I am looking at a couple of different contracts, how much effect is the use year going to have on me as I plan vacations. I understand that use year is when the points are added. But, in the grand scheme of things, is it going to make planning (and using my points) more difficult of I have a March and October use year, for example?

Can the contracts be combined by MS and given the same use year? (I am guessing no...)

No, MS will not combine different Use Years. Having a different Use Year does not matter when you are making reservations - it could have an effect if you need to cancel a reservation since you could be beyond your banking deadline if you need to cancel. Otherwise, it's just when you get your points each year and will require a little more diligence to track the points and deadlines. I have had as many as 4 different Use Years and had no problems keeping track of everything - and with the information on the member's site, it makes it even easier.

Like a lot of the "details" of DVC, on the DIS we probably over-emphasize the importance of UY. It's really just one of the factors about your DVC account that you manage.

Does it complicate your life sometimes? Sure. I'd rather have the same UY on various contracts (I do). But it's a manageable component of your DVC ownership.

If you are buying resale, you can not combine contract, period, even if they have the same UY. That means to use points from 2 different contracts to book the same reservation, you will need to transfer points from one contract to the other first.

Most people decide on UY based on what month they are most likely to take their yearly vacation. For example, if you mostly take summer vacations, you'd probably want May or June UY, so in case you want to cancel your reservation, you still have time to use the points later.
