Upstate NY to FL - where to stop for the night?

I know there are people who just drive straight through - but I am not one of those people. :rotfl2: I think I'm good for about 12-14 hours of driving (split between 3 drivers) the first day.

I believe that would put us somewhere around southern North Carolina or northern South Carolina, so I'm looking for any good campgrounds people have found to set up for one night and sleep before finishing the trip to Disney the next day.

Any suggestions?

We are headed from Binghamton NY area to WDW in Oct. We are booked at New Green Acres in Walterboro SC. We have never stayed there but it looks fine after a 14 hour drive!

We are from Northern NY (Canton-Potsdam area) and always drive. We usually split it over three days. Our last trip was my favorite - we took I-81 to I-66 in Northern Va., then rtes 15/17 which put us below DC. We stopped for the first night in Stony Creek, Va. The second day we drove I-95 to Kingsland Ga. and stayed there for the night. It is right on the Ga./ Fl. border, so we were at WDW by 10am and spent that whole day at Epcot. It's a longer first day of driving, but it works for us because we're so excited to get there and don't mind it so much the first day - the ride HOME is always the killer!!:(

We live in Canada, just across the border north of Watertown NY. We take 4 days for the trip, about 350 miles a day. (Retirement has it's advantages!)

We follow I-81 and spend out first night at Harrisburg East Campground, Harrisburg PA. Then we're back on I-81 and continue south to the KOA at Wytheville VA where we spend the second night. Leaving Wytheville we take I-77 and I-26 to I-95 and spend the third night at New Green Acres Campground in Walterboro SC. The fourth day it's I-95 and I-4 to Fort Wilderness.

It's an easy route and we never encounter any rush-hour traffic!

CDNcruiser, are you the author of that fabulous blog on allears about taking your motorhome to WDW? It was great!:thumbsup2

I'll have to check some of these out! We usually drive straight through from the Binghamton area too but are talking about stopping this year.

We live in Saratoga Springs we are going to Disney for the first time on Dec.13-27th, we are taking the train. We didnt want to go straight through and were going to stop in Fayetteville NC you might want to check the train schedule to give you and idea of how many hours. Were are you in upstate NY:)

Just got back. We stayed in NC at the Enfield/Rocky Mount KOA. Pull through with water and electric. Very close to HW exit.

We have stayed there both directions for two trips - and will go there again for the next.

By the way, you (like us) will arrive late on the second night. Instead of dealing with the FW checkin, and parking your rig late in the evening (and paying the high FW prices for just sleeping), think about doing your first night at Topical Palms Resort in Kissimmee:

For the past two trips, we have reserved two nights (for cheaper than one night at FW). We arrive late, leave the trailer at Tropical Palms and head over to FW for checkin very early, spend the day at one of the parks, and then head back to Tropical Palms to pick up the trailer. The trailer has been air conditioned all day, so it is cool when we set it up at FW. When we pull the trailer in to FW, it is still light out, so we can see where we are parking it. Plus, we didn't waste the first day messing around with parking the trailer.

All this talk of Binghamton is making me crave a spiedie!!!

Got to love Spiedies! When I was kid my mom worked for the Family that brought the Spiedie over here from Italy!!;)

Campgrounds along the I-95 corridor that we have stayed at and I can personally recommend:

KOA at Enfield, NC

KOA near Smithfield, NC

Florence RV Travel Park (previously a KOA) Florence, SC (TV Road Exit)

KOA near Savannah, GA

MMMMM....spiedie FEST?!?! Now THAT'S my kind of celebration!!

I lived in the Southern Tier (around Norwich) and traveled for an optical chain; I went wherever they needed a licensed optician for the day, usually between Norwich, Oneonta, Utica, Binghamton (Front St.), and Vestal. Whenever I was sent to the Vestal Parkway store, I feasted on spiedies from the place next door! Yummmmyyyy!!!!!!!!!!!!!:yay:

Glad to hear a recommendation for the Florence RV Travel Park. We are Good Sam members and that was one of the parks I was looking at on the Good Sam site. :thumbsup2

We love Brook's too! My DH was born just outside Oneonta so we visit Brook's when visting his family! As a matter of fact my DH family reunion next month is being catered by Brook's!:yay:

Brooks was my FAVORITE in Oneonta!

Traveling for a living, I had my favorite stops everywhere. This derriere didn't build itself!!:rotfl:

I love me some Brook's. We are lucky they do a lot of the traveling BBQs around us so I can get a fix. Otherwise, I have a marinade I make at home that is close enough to Brook's to satisfy me. :)
