You know maybe I'm just not paying attention, but is there a book exchange here on the DIS? I have several books that I've read and am done with for now, and I would hate for them to go to waste just collecting dust around my house. I've been trying to get back into reading regularly now that school is out. If anyone's interested I've just read:

The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver
I Know This Much Is True by Wally Lamb
The Bonesetter's Daughter by Amy Tan

All are very good, in my opinion.

I just ordered a book from Amazon, and my goodness! books are so expensive! If anyone has a good book they are done with that I can read, please let me know I forgot how much I enjoyed reading.

I would be interested in exchanging books also. I agree the cost of books are expensive and if it's something that you know you aren't going to read again, why not exchange.

There was a book exchange last summer. Wasn't it Rajah who organized it? If it was, maybe she could give you a few pointers. I know that there are a lot of readers here. I would enjoy participating if you get one going.

I didn't join last year, but I think you turned in the names of the books you wanted to exchange and then a list was compiled. Then you got to choose from the list the same number of books that you put in. Make sense?

Yes, Rajah did this last year. You could "donate" up to 3 books and then a list was compiled with all the books and little blurb about them. You chose the ones you wanted from the list. I got 3 really good books as a result.

Yes, Rajah did run it last year.
It was great......but it was a lot of work for her.
It was very complicated with everyone choosing their top favorites from a spreadsheet she made and then she had to choose who got which book.
She did an amazing job with it.

Alright. I don't mind organizing this. If Rajah is around, perhaps she would like to help out again but it's ok if she doesn't I'm sure she had her fill of it last time But the way it was done last time sounds like the most efficient way of doing it.

Should we list the books here first, and then I will compile a list which I will email to everyone who joins? Or should everyone just email me their lists? We'll stick with the 3 books. And should there be a deadline, or will this be a continuing list?

You might want to contact Rajah.
She had everyone mail her the titles of the books and genre.
Then she sent the whole list to everyone and they picked their top picks.............how ever many books they were submitting plus a few in case it went farther down the list than that.
You got as many books back as were taken of yours........some books weren't chosen at all. That's why it got complicated.
I know I listed 6 and 3 were chosen.



She had a time frame for sending book titles in and then a mail by date.

Kirby -- an ExchangeAholics? Why not an ExchangeAholic's Exchange where everyone exchanges postcards or other small gifts that have a tag printed on them that say "Hello, I am (name) and I'm an exchange-aholic"? LOL!

Rajah and I have communicated. She is busy with other things, and said it was ok if I organized the book exchange this time. She gave me some great tips. So I took it all in, and now this is how the book exchange will work:

I'm doing it similar to Rajah's method with some differences.

To sign up officially for the book exchange, those interested must PM me their name/screenname, mailing address, and email address. I will compile the list of participants.

You may put in 5 books into the exchange. For the best organization of book lists, I am asking to please list the books on a Word document. Each book listed must have book title, author, and genre as well as a brief description (eg. if the book is in large print, or is on tape, etc.) I will then organize each book into genre and will email them to the participants. Each participant will email me back their "wish list", the list of books that they want from the exchange in order of preference. NOTE: Although you can put in as many as 5 books, you can "wish" for 10. That way I can make sure that everyone will get a book that they "wished" for. ANOTHER NOTE: Although you can "wish" for up to 10 books, you will only receive and be assigned as many books as you put into the exchange. i.e. You wished for 10 books, but put in only 3 books. You will receive 3 books from the exchange.

What happens if you have a book that doesn't get chosen by anyone? Well the fairest way I thought to do was to take that book out of the exchange. So thus, if you had 5 books in the exchange and 1 did not get chosen, you would take that out and it would be as if you only put in 4 books. I know, that stinks. But if anyone has a better and fair way to do it, I'm open to suggestions.

If more than 1 person chooses the same book for their top preferences, I will randomly select a participant to get that book, and I will have to cross it off the others' wish lists. That stinks too, but it's the only fair way to do it.

Obviously there needs to be a deadline for all of this so here it goes: updated (sorry! i needed to be more clear on these dates)

Participant sign-up deadline: Monday June 30
Participant book list (up to 5 books): Tuesday July 8
I will have the complete book list by that Thursday July 10 (tentatively)
Wish list due by Sunday July 13
I will have the final exchange list by Wednesday July 16

The dates are subject to change, but I'm going to try my best to stick to these dates. Especially the participant sign-up deadline. Of course I am trusting that all participants will fulfill their part in shipping their books when the time is due. If you have any questions please PM me or email me jennyhaddow@yahoo.com.

NOTE: Everyone is responsible for getting their books shipped to the appropriate person, I am simply providing the list of which books go where.

Also, I will leave it up to the participants to decide who will pay for shipping, either you will pay the postage when you send it out or the person receiving pays for postage... What does everyone think??? I just don't want anyone to get ripped off or disappointed.
