Updated Canada/US Border Rules Announced 19 July 2021

I have a trip planned to California for Christmas, but this is the second year in a row cancelling our orlando trip, just very dissapointing. If my daughter was over 12 i wouldn't be nervous as she'd be vaccinated, and with projections that 6 to 12 year olds will be able to be vaccinated by october i'm not nervous for that trip, but for this one, with the risk of her testing positive (i understand any of us could theoretically, just chance is much lower) and not being able to come home, there is NO way I could enjoy that vacation at all thinking about this the whole time. it was a 16 day trip, 11 at Disney, 5 at Universal.

I can understand that. Our daughter is 13 and we are all double vaxed, so that played into our decision to go. But we are still avoiding table service dining and masking in indoor places etc. Just keeping that extra layer of caution.

As of Aug. 9, children under 12 — who aren't yet approved to receive a vaccine — will be exempt from the quarantine requirement after entering Canada and can move around with their parents if they follow public health measures.
Those children should avoid group settings such as school, camps and daycares.

This is the part I was most excited about, until I read the second part. I'm not sure how exempting them from quarantine requirements is helpful if they still can't go to daycare/school. I'm hopeful that by our trip in September that part will also be dropped.

My sister lives in Florida . Fully vacced. She had an outdoor party for my nephew last weekend for his birthday. She gets a call two days later from an adult who came to the party .. he’s a surgeon, has to test daily for work, he is fully vaccinated but tested POSITIVE. Now everyone is getting tested. You can still contract the virus and spread it when fully vaccinated . THAT is why it is still necessary to test at this time.

I wouldn’t count on it. I don’t think schools will be open to that. And school boards could always put in their own restrictions as far as travel is concerned.

I think getting rid of the quarantine requirement was more so parents wouldn’t be stuck at home as well. They can bring their kids places with them.

I can empathize. We had 2 trips in 2020 we had to cancel and moved a few to the end of this year. Now, we had moved a couple next year.

My kids are over 12 and fully vaccinated, and I'm still nervous about it. So I can only imagine your worry. I don't think I would be able to enjoy my vacation either.

Other than it just being a pain to have to coordinate getting a test within the proper time frames, what is the issue people object to as far as getting tested? I've been tested every 2 weeks since last april with the PCR (up to your brain swab) and rapid tested 2x a week for work. It's really not that big of a deal.

I think the biggest objection is the cost. For a day trip (or say a weekend trip) over the land border, even if you only did one test (that you would use for entry to the US and again back to Canada) it costs about $200 (give or take). For a family of 4 that's a lot of money to add on to your day/weekend getaway.

Honestly, it's not the test itself. It's the fact that we have to look for a test during our trip. I would be okay if every location we're staying has available tests, so we just need to go there in the morning and then go about our trip without the inconvenience....sounds selfish, but I'd rather wait until it's not required for fully vaccinated people. This is why I'm good with the arrival test...not the pre-entry test.

Except anyone but Canadians probably won't be caught at the border because anyone flying in won't be allowed on the plane to begin with.

I'm not understanding your point? I agree, they won't be allowed on the plane but that is because of the testing requirement.

I'm not sure what you mean by this. Whether it's by land or by air, they won't let you in (by air you can't board the plan, by land they won't let you across) unless you have that negative test.

Not going to lie but the hope that I would no longer be required to test as often was 100% the reason I jumped on the vaccine as soon as it was offered for me at work. That was back in January. Vaccinated employees got a brief break from testing in May and June but now that #'s are back up, and most of our positives here at work ARE vaccinated, we are back to regular testing.

I agree. I understand why it needs to be done. This just means I will have to cancel my plans. Annoying, but understandable.

Just hoping this will change as vaccinations increase.

The info probably won't ever get to the government about how many peopleare trying to get in and have tested positive. The airline will just turn them away. I have yet to see any data on people testing positive and trying to board a plane

Just for travel. If you need it done for symptoms/exposure etc, you do not have to pay.

Its not the coordination or cost for me. It's knowing that if one of my party tests positive (and the under 12 year old has no vaccine protection and we are doing to a state with the highest rate of increasing cases and very cramped the parks) that if one tests positive we cannot even come home. If it was "go home and quarantine", fine, but to have to arrange for 14 extra days in Florida 2 days before departure, cannot do this.

I would not be surprised if the government gets that kind of info though.
