It is lunchtime here, ya know. :snooty:

How's tricks in Scotland? GEESH, it's expensive to live there!

That it is, and do you think the company will give dh a raise? Nope. They lied to us and said it costs the same as in Canada, so they lowered dh's salary to work with the conversion into pounds, then we come over here and WHAM! It's 40% more expensive and we don't have the moula to compensate. Dh is practically begging for a raise just so we can buy food every month so we'll see what happens tomorrow. I'm trying to remain optimistic. They had dh sign a 2 year contract so he's here regardless if he gets the raise, I guess we didn't think the company he's been working for for 10 years would try to rip us off. Oh well, everything works out in the end.

I've never had a tamale before. My brother has a friend whose mom makes them from scratch, and she'll send a big batch over for my brother. But he's never bothered to share them. :rotfl:

My sister had a Vietnamese friend in HS, and she lived with us for awhile in college. She made eggrolls (I can't remember what they're called in Vietnamese) and my sis and I helped. They are sooo time-consuming to make, but soooo yummy! She also used the delicate won-ton wrap, and the really thin, clear noodles, ground pork, lots of shaved veggies. YUMMMMM!!!

Really? You gotta try one! It's yummy! :thumbsup2

I love their chicken gyozu (dumplings). It's really good if you fry them in a pan with a little oil. It also tastes good boiled. I dip them in ketchup or hoisen sauce (tastes sweet and is used for eating peking duck).

ketchup?? Clearly your not a REAL asian!!! ;)

I don't know well enough exactly where you are to say which location would be close to you. Hopefully you can find one nearby. The food really is yummy!

If you like quiche, they make 3 or 4 varieties in a little personal size (frozen.) I like the spinach one, and I think there's another that has mushrooms, both good. I know I've tried other quickie meal things there, but I'm drawing a blank on them at the moment, sorry.

I've tried several of the desserts, including the key lime pie and the NY cheesecake, WOW! All you need to do is thaw and drizzle with your favorite topping. But it's HUGE! Definitely not something to get unless you're having lots of guests. The key lime pie we just topped with whipped cream, it was fantastic! :thumbsup2

I like getting the frozen veggies (peas, sweet white corn) there as well, it seems to be better quality than the stuff I get in the grocery store. And they have bags of frozen mixed berries, too, great for putting on ice cream. And the berries aren't all mushed and yucky, they're whole and in good condition when thawed. Oh, do they also have the apple blossom tart? GOSH, I love those. Dang it, I just ate, but now I'm craving all these wonderful things! :rotfl:

ok I had to look up gyoza to see what they are.. ahhhh Japanese potstickers. They look yummy!

Now Tamales, I have had and LOVE LOVE LOVE them. We would drive out of our way to get tamales at a Mexican Deli in St Paul, buy a big 5 pound bag of them to freeze- mmmmmmm great to zap in the micorwave for a quick yummy meal. We had some at another place, just wasn't the same. Bland as all heck-bleh!

I'm tempted to buy some at Food 4 Less but, they only have large packages. Want to try just one or two to test drive before we splurge on an 8 pack.
Haven't looked for them at the Mexican gocery store yet, happy to see they had fresh masa dough so I could make my own instead of tinkering with getting the right consistency from masa harina mix.

That's terrible!
I hope they do the right thing.

You guys shouldn't be talking about such yummy food when I'm trying to lose weight for my disneyland trip. Oh what the heck continue, I especially enjoyed the part about the cheesecake...is it chocolate cheesecake? mmmmmmmmmm.....mmmmmmm

My brother said don't bother getting ones that aren't wrapped in cornhusk, they aren't as good. What else do they wrap them in, tortillas? I have no idea, but he says it's a huge difference. I've never eaten cornhusk before... :confused3

:rotfl2: I know! Me too!! I skipped out on lunch since I ate hotcakes and sausage this morning from Mc D's. I did try the Mexican Quiche from Trader Joe's. It was really good.

oh Christina! How crummy for you and your dh.
I would show them proof how much it costs for say typical groceries, rent, transportation. Show how it differs and how you are struggling.

No, it's the plain NY style. Rich as all get-out, so you really can only eat a little sliver!

I love it with strawberries and sauce drizzled over it, or really any kind of berries. I bet it would be good with a dark chocolate sauce. Ooo, with some fresh raspberries as garnish! Wow, I'm getting woozy... :rotfl:

pfft we'll have to see. They keep just saying dh is wrong, that it's not more expensive here. The worst part is the guy who lied to us is from Canada so he should have known better. It's hard to explain your case when they just think you're whining but dh is gathering all his facts and proof and will show to his new boss tomorrow. I hope his new boss will be better because he's born and raised Scottish so he wont' be all like "well when I moved from Canada 10 years ago this is how it was..." we'll see.
CHRISTINA!!!! :cool1: :cheer2: :yay: :dance3: What time is it where you are? Yes, we are talking about food. I'm starving! :rotfl2:

PIXTER!!! I havent seen you in ages. It is 9:30pm here. I played wii until my batteries died in the remote. I was so sore today I couldnt move my arm so I thought more exercise would help, and it did! I can move my arm now, but we'll see how it is tomorrow :rotfl2:

Oh gosh, Christina, DH and DS7 were playing wii baseball on Sunday, and it reminded me of you. DH was pitching and kept complaining about his shoulder. But he didn't stop playing. I just looked at him like this: :sad2:

pssssst don't eat the cornhusk :rotfl2:

Sometimes they are wrapped in a banana leaf, it's a more rustic consistency.
If they cheap out.. they are wrapped only in foil. Not sure how that would taste, the corn husk helps the masa dough steam perfectly... you would think the foil would make htem dry.

DL use to sell tamales, near the Matterhorn. Haven't found them since that visit.. we asked and they said it was only seasonal :confused3

:rotfl2: You should know that when people warn me it's rich I don't stop. I will eat the whole darn piece and then complain AFTERWARDS it was rich. But mmmm after that first bite of cheesecake I'm gone. The yummiest I ever had was at the fancy restaraunt dh took me to for my birthday one year. It was their special it was called something like caramel swirl cheesecake or something. Anyways it was melt in your mouth and elsewhere good. It was sooo awesome and I ate the piece and I have never ever been able to find a cheesecake even close in comparison to that one. And I still want it.

Oh, there's dough inside the husk? :rotfl2:

I think I've seen a show (maybe the kids' show Buster?) where they made tamales from scratch, and don't they soak the corn husk in something to make them really soft? I just assumed that's what you wrap the filling in, I didn't realize there was dough. Learn somethin' new every day!

:snooty: I'll have you know in my family we use Ketchup! :rotfl2:

It's all about the salsa babe!!!!

mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
