Universal Trip...when's the best time to go?

Me and my fiance are thinking about going to Universal sometime in October this year but we don't know which day would be a better option for us. We are looking to stay at an affordable hotel nearby. Also we know that Universal in October is known for the Halloween Horror Nights and it can get pretty busy during that time in the Orlando area. My question is, can anyone recommend any affordable, nice hotels nearby the park and which day would you recommend going on? THANKS!

A couple of hotels that are nearby that you might want to check on. Hyatt Place, Drury Inn or Homewood Suites.
