Unfortunate way to end our magical cruise

Just a warning--the TSA guys are ones to watch as well, and not just for tablet computers, sometimes for MUCH MORE IMPORTANT THINGS. Somebody stole my daughter's asthma inhaler out of our bag while we were going through TSA--that was the day I found out that inhalers have street value! Thankfully, my mother (who also has asthma) was traveling with us and had a spare, but DD started wheezing and THAT's when we found out the inhaler was taken.

This is disguising. Who would steal a child's inhaler? :(

Wow, we were on the same cruise as well! I'm thankful for my wife, she's paranoid and made us lock up everything all the time (iphone 5, iphone 4, 2xipads!). I always think she's being overprotective, but I'm glad she does it.

Good luck with your insurance, OP!

I am so sorry this happened to you. It's such a personal violation. I have cruised many times on the Wonder and never had anything stolen, but I imagine my feelings would be well hurt if it ever happened.

Thanks for the reminder to keep an eye on our things. :thumbsup2

I believe incidences like the OP's are NOT the norm.
In 16 trips to WDW and 7 cruises (5 DCL), we have left all our valuables out and never had anything disappear.
In June we had 4 Ipads, 4 iphones and a latop and we never put any of it in the safe- no way all that would fit anyway. This was at WDW and the Fantasy cruise that followed.
I just did not want people to get overly concerned. Yes, things happen but it is still rare.

Wow, driving home Now from the Fantasy and left our iPad and 3 iPhones laying around all week. No trouble at all!

Same here..... we had our 2 iPads in carry-ons for the 5 Nights on the Dream 6 weeks ago and no problem..... as well as the camera bag with a couple of cameras, and my kids phones that were being constantly charged as they used them as cameras.

I have always felt secure on Disney cruise ships.

Ugh!!! So scary, My hubby will be bringing his brand new nikon D7000 and Im sure it wont fit in the somewhat flat safe? So I guess we have to carry it everywhere? What other way is there to keep your stuff safe? What stops them from stealing the piece of locked luggage? Goodness! pirate:

A camera never left my shoulder our entire cruise.... if it was the only one on the trip it would have been with me all the time so it couldn't be stolen! ;)

Don't worry, my dh has a big Nikon DSLR and it fits in the safe.:thumbsup2 It's not the thin little flat things built into the wall like at WDW resorts.

We get so comfortable on the ship and we treat the crew like they are close friends that we forget that we've just met these people. In most cases, they do become friends but I guess there's always a chance that there's a bad egg.

I know that I start a cruise locking everything up and as the week goes by, I let my guard down. stuff gets left out.

It's disappointing to have the Disney magic shattered like that. I hope your insurance comes through. And thanks for the reminder.

We always ask for particular server recommendations. It's a pity we can't request a host that we know and trust.

I'm shocked to hear stories like this and sorry for you. I am curious about how often things like this happen since I cruise at least twice a year and I usually bring several electronics with me (iphone, iPad, and iPod) and never had a problem. I usually keep these items in the safe as you did but I also pack the night be just as you did. Makes me consider changing my packing habits when I prepare to leave the ship.

As a 'deterent' on our luggage my DH puts these tie wraps on the zippers. Might slow a thief down or make them walk away and not bother with it since it would be obvious it was broken into if one was cut off and removed. We'll be packing a package of these to bring along.

The safes are fairly big - square not flat.

I usually lock things in my suitcase because it is bigger than the safe and a bit easier. I also tuck things that are tempting into closed drawers because I think many thefts are the result of a moment's temptation to take something in plain sight. I have been known to test the waters by leaving out bits of change or small sums of money that are clearly not intended as tips. I do however often forget and leave things out. So far I have been lucky I guess!

I am freaking out a bit! We sail a week from today, and am wondering if we should change our packing plans. I was planning on bringing my iPad, all my books on it, but would hate to have anything happen to it, as it was a gift from my son, and engraved with a message from him. I have no problem bringing some paperbacks, but would sorely miss my iPad on the plane and in the hotel the night before. I DO have an old iPod Touch, but going back to that after using my iPad is like going from a Rolls Royce to a Model T, lol. DH is also planning on bringing his small laptop and 2 external hard drives for our photographs, and we are both bringing DSLR cameras and equipment. In stays at our DVC resort, DH cable locks his laptop to something in the room. We take general precautions, such as putting things out of sight. I always get nervous when thinking of the room being open when they clean, but in several Disney trips we have never had any problems. We do have AAA trip insurance, not sure if it covers theft, but will find out. If my iPad will fit in the safe, as well as the external hard drives, I will feel better. Haven't locked our luggage in years, usually do zip ties, but think I will go get TSA locks. I take heart that many on the same cruise had no problems, and realize this may be an isolated incident, {so sorry, OP}, just hoping the safe will hold more than the room safes @ BLT. Anyone have a picture of the safes? Should I pack as planned, or not? :confused3 What would YOU do?

I would be prudent, but not panic. Theft is not as big a problem as it appears here. It only sounds large here because those who have had problems are posting to this thread.... but in reality it is not a major problem.

Like I have said, we whether by intent or carelessness have left things in our room (phones charging, cameras, iPad, etc) and they all came home with us.

Make sure you have "Find iPad" properly configured so if you get nabbed you can track it easily!

Odds are you won't need it!

Just got off the Dream yesterday with both our iPads and smartphones safe. Never even locked a thing in our safe. We kept things in drawers or out of sight, but hubby did leave his phone out some. Even left his change of. I think getting to know your attendant the first day helps so maybe he feels he can't steal from nice people! :)
The night before, use zip ties on all luggage.

Please update us as to what Disney finds out. I've always worked under the assumption there is a very limited set of people who have access to my room and it would be easy to track down a thief. We never locked anything in a safe - ever. On our Alaskan cruise, we had 2 DSLRs, 3 lenses, a laptop, and the Kindle Fire all left out. I really didn't want to have to lock up my stuff every time we left the room. That really is horrible someone stole from you while on vacation. I still can't believe this is the world we live in. I'm so sorry!

What concerns me about this is that on many cruises we have seen stateroom doors braced open (even came back to our's like that) while the room steward is next door. He cannot keep an eye on your room while he is doing another room. I wrote this on the comment card that they should only have the door open of the room they are actually working in. It truly is a safety issue.

On our second cruise we had a grandmother and her granddaughter in the room next to us. She came out of the room very distraught one night after dinner. They had left their two cell phones in the nightstand drawer and they were both gone. The room steward was nowhere to be seen, but their room door had been left propped open (and the cart was in the hall). :(
