Unfathomable: Church Massacre

I am in Charleston. The amount of support in the community is amazing. We have come together in a way that is the polar opposite of what the murderer wanted. Personally, I want to spend more time reading about the victims and their families versus giving any more airplay to their murderer.

While Charleston was a key city in the Civil War and does have darkness in its history, she is also known as a place where all people try to come together. Our city and our leaders have made every effort to embrace each other. And if he wanted to start a racial war here, well, he picked the wrong city.

It's very uplifting to read your comments. I hope this ugliness only strengthens the determination to embrace each other, it's for sure we can use a lot more of that attitude.

Just reading what the families had to say at the bond hearing is humbling.

So sorry for all of you

My son did Habitat during his spring breaks in college. One year they worked in South Carolina. They went in to Charleston a few times and he told me Charleston had just the nicest people he ever met. So welcoming and very kind to the kids wearing the Habitat shirts

We have a close relationship with our neighbor church, Mount Zion, and have at least one joint service every year. Pastor Brown preached at our church just this past Sunday, and the subject of his sermon was "the power of one" - that every individual has the power to make a difference in this world whether good or bad. I cannot stop thinking about it. Pastor Brown was a close friend of Pastor Pinckney and other victims. Our community will rise above the killer`s efforts to promote fear and hatred, and the community, especially the faithful, will be there for Emanuel long after the media leaves. I drive by Emanuel twice a day and I do not know when I will be able to drive by the church again without tears. Praying for Emanuel and giving thanks for the lives of those we lost that horrible night.

I went to bed Tuesday and heard this and thought who the heck would go into a church and shoot people? Church is one of the last places you would think this would happen at. Flash-Forward to yesterday morning....

This hit all too close to hope for me...

Shelby, NC is less than 30 minutes from me and I couldn't believe he found his way to NC. As you heard the stories rolling in here about the Florist from Kings Mountain, who followed him, she's a hero in my opinion. I would love to know why he was coming to NC, makes you wonder if it was to do more killings. But in NC you heard all the breaking news and things came out locally today in the paper. The guy was spotted 5 minutes from where I am right now and I was out walking during that time. It all struck too close for me, and makes you wonder what is going on in people's heads.

I am originally from Ohio, but since I moved to the south, racism is very much a reality down here still especially at the NC border and SC. They do have the death penalty in SC, but WISH so badly we had eye for an eye to punish him that same way. I laughed at him having a bond hearing too, I was like you have to be kidding me!

I just that too..... Omg these good people have lost so much and are telling him that they forgive him.
Its so awful that this animal did this to good innocent people, who welcomed him into their church with open arms. He is a racist pig who will burn in hell. He is not insane is he pure evil.

You left out terrorist thug . . .

He was quoted as saying that he was headed to Nashville because he had never been there. No other reason given.

After all the caring words by state officials, there is this.

In one of the articles from the link I posted above, his sister was supposed to get married this Sunday and his future brother-in-law lived about a mile and a half from where he was caught. Coincidence? I don't know. Perhaps he was familiar with the area. Maybe he thought he'd find his sister there?

I heard about this more today. He found his way through Gastonia, Charlotte (where his credit card was used) and then was arrested in Shelby. I didn't hear about the wedding part though. But to go from Charleston up to Shelby, you don't go from east to west to east, he took a strange route.
