Underwater Digital Camera Info - Different Models (merged threads)

I have a Pentax and love it! I've had it for a few years, and am very pleased with it.
What model do you have? is it waterproof? can you post pictures so we can see the results?

Thanks

My husband has a very nice Nikon we plan to bring on our trip, but we do not want to risk getting it wet on CC. Rather than buying multiple disposable underwater cameras, we bought the Snap Sight Underwater Camera from a online divers supply store for only 12.95 (on sale). It can be used up to 100 FT, has a flash, and can be reloaded with film. Our cruise is next week :yay: - will let you know how well it works! Oh- and I hear you get a free pin when you have your film developed at Shutters!

Has anyone had good experience with a single-use waterproof camera or an inexpensive waterproof case for their digital camera? My camera is not cheap and I'm worried about using the waterproof cases I've seen out there for around $15. The single-use camera seems like a good option but how is the quality of the photos?

I have a DiCaPac case. It's basically a waterproof case that allows your camera to be used underwater.

I purchased this on ebay for use in Disney. I tried it on my cheap camera first ($150) and fully sumerged it. Worked like a charm! No water allowed in!! So I tried it with my $400 camera in the pools at AKL and PERFECT results:banana:  No wet camera at all.

My only complaint is the fact that water droplets can collect on the front and mess up the photo, so I always had to remember to dip it to clean it. You can see this on a link here:

I am so happy with the way they turned out!!!

The earlier fish ones were from St. Maarten and the later stingray and fish and minnie were at Castaway Cay. BTW the first two stinray shots were of a stingray at the family beach. He still had his barb on. The ones at the Stingray excursion are "groomed" to have their barbs removed. As my friend said "he was face to face with danger" at CC!!! LOL!!!

I would definitely not recommend the disposable cameras. It was a nice sunny day on Castaway Cay and we got a couple of good shots, but most of them were awful!

Canon just announced a new undewater camera. It's a 12 megapixel with image stabilization. It's also got their face detection technology on it.

It looks awesome and I'm a canon girl so I preordered it.:) Our cruise is May 23rd and it's coming our in May "sometime". :scared1: I hope it's early May!!

Here's the link if you want to see it:

Looks cool....

One thing I wish my camera had was a view finder.....for underwater shots it is hard to balance in the water holding the camera away from you to get the shot....even on my regular digital SLR I prefer to use the view finder instead of the screen.

I agree. My Canon xsi has live view to use the LCD, but I can't get away from the view finder.

Hello everyone.
Just came across this thread. Questions for the Olympus 850 sw people: Does the camera have the movie option as well. I have a Nikon cool pix, that i love, but I have a waterproof pouch that is unnerving.
Dd11 are going on 4 Wonder cruise in October and I am doing a snorkel trip with Stuart Cove and I want easy access to my camera as well as take kick butt pictures.
After reading this thread, I went onto amazon to price the 850 and saw the differnt colors.
TIA

Yes, it takes short vidoes....here is one of the Quiet Cove Pool during semi-rough seas that I took...I have not tried to do the video underwater yet.

What kind of battery life are you getting with the Olympus 850. It looks like it uses some kind of battery pack instead of regular AA batteries. I am a little leary of buying a camera I have to plug in every night. We do a lot of travel were we are off the grid and I just carry extra AA batteries with me now. Any thoughts?

I found replacement batteris for the Olympus Stylus 850-SW on Ebay very inexpensive.
I found someplace with the camera for 110 dollars plus 10.00 shipping. They are about to release the new camera models next month though if having the latest model and all the bells and whistles are important you should wait. If you want a bargain this is a good time to buy.

Heres the camera article:

I have two batteries that I swaped out each night on our cruise while the other one charged. I never let it really run out completely so I can't tell you exactly how long one battery life lasted.....

I was told it would not harm the battery if I charged it without it being fully drained...so I hope that is true!!

I am unsure if they carry that camera or not< i just purchased the Olympus Stylus 850-SW and thought I would share the source of my bargain. My other camera is a Sony DSC-H2. I liked it but the shutter button on mine as well as many of this model broke immediately when the warranty was up and it cost half the price of the camera to have it fixed.:scared1:
Its cheaper to replace than repair. I have a waterproof underwater camera bag for it. I am completely disgusted with Sony over that camera, it should have been recalled for repair like an automobile.

ouch!

I have had a couple Sony cameras and liked them (no issues like you had). I have been looking for an UW camera for a while now and just didn't like what was out there, until I read the specs on the D10. Here's what I want -

1. good to at least 30 feet (10 is not enough)
2. an optical zoom (not digital) with at least 3x
3. a good quality movie mode (30 fps) and decent size movie (640x480)
4. a length of movie that is only limited to the storage card, not 10 or 15 seconds.
5. excellent quality pics

They all have sufficient mega pixals so that wasn't a problem. I also would like a camera that shoots well at night (we'll see about the D10).

until the D10, i couldn't find all of these together. I figured that i had to get a non WP camera, then get a case for it.
