Umbrella Stroller

I'm thinking we might buy an inexpensive umbrella stroller for our next trip. Last time we just brought our sling and rented a double 2 days (our ds were 8months and 3yrs then). This time the baby will be too big to sling, too little to do much walking. We won't need a double since our 4 yr old is a big walker/ walked a lot last time with no complaint.

So, does anyone have a recomendation for an inexpensive stroller? Where'd you get it? Any reason not to bring a cheap-o stroller (will it break)? We have a nice double jogger, but it is way too heavy to bring on and off the busses.

Thanks

I found a stroller for $20 last year at walmart and it had a canopy and a basket on the bottom. It was great for our trip as our DS was 2 at the time. It folds in half, not legnthwise as an umbrella. it weighs about 5 lbs and we still use it all the time..

Sorry I don't rememebr who made it though.. it might have been graco or costco

Thanks for your reply. I was worried an inexpensive stroller wouldn't hold up. I have visions of getting in the park our first day and a wheel falling off.

Any recomendations as far as brands, anyone?

I purchased a stroller 2 years ago as an extra so my mom would have one in her car too. I ended up keeping the new one and giving her my older one. I got it at toys R us for like 20 bucks or so but what I liked about this one was that it reclined. It's a type of umbrella stroller that has a canopy and it reclines, I felt bad everytime my son fell asleep in the stroller and his head kept falling forward. It has a cupholder for the adult and one for the kid and a basket under. it folds in half it's pretty light. I'll get the model name when I get home. My son is now 4 but I have a funny feeling he is NOT going to walk the whole park. Plus since there are 4 adults if he does walk we can store our junk in the stroller.

We got this stroller online at Walmart for our trip in Feb. and we have been using it ever since:

It was made by Cosco and it worked pretty well for us and it was easy to fold up. Storage bin and cup holder worked great! When I just checked online to see if they still had it, I saw another one that is similiar, but looks a little better:

We have used this stroller since we got back for everything. My DD is 4 and we still take it with us on long shopping trips. It is getting a bit difficult to steer now that she is 38 lbs, but much easier than one of those cheaper umbrella strollers.

We tied a bright ribbon on the handle so we knew it was ours. Good luck!!

We just returned from a trip with our 4 month old DD and I bought the Graco Umbroller which I managed to buy at Target for a mere $17. I didn't feel comfortable bringing my $300 Peg Perego and leaving it outside the rides! The Umbroller totally served it's purpose and held up very well...no complaints. The canopy was pretty substantial and the basket was a decent size. It was also extremely lightweight which came in handy when you need cart it on and off the buses.

This is great! Thank you everyone for your responses!

So Graco and Cosco are good brands. Got it. Now some of you mentioned cup holders, and I hadn't even though of that since our jogger doesn't have any, which makes me wonder what else I'm overlooking. I don't need bells and whistles, but anything else I should be thinking about? I'll do a thread search, too. I know I should tie green ribbons, anything else?

And I just want to say, again, this is wonderful. I love the Dis.

Hey Lollipop Mom,

Are you my twin? I've a 4 and (almost) 2 yr old Buzz and Woody fans that call my parents Grammy and Poppie, too. ;) Fun.

If you find a stroller you like that doesn't have cupholders, you can buy them to attach to the stroller. They are pretty inexpensive and you can usually find them at Babies R Us.

My mom received a cheap umbrella stroller for a baby shower before I was born (27 yrs ago!). It went through me, 5 kids she babysat, now the fifth grandchild, and even went to WDW in 2002! Talk about a great investment!!!

I would at least go to a store (Wal-Mart...) and try pushing the stroller you are thinking about purchasing up and down a few aisles before you buy. The strollers we have are ok for going to the mall, but you have to bend over to push them, and after a while, your back can start to hurt. I can only imagine what being hunched over for an entire WDW vacation would feel like.

BTW, if you don't have your child with you when you shop for a stroller, find something heavy to test it with. Good possibilities you can find around the store are cases of formula, books, or big sacks of cat litter. You want to put at least 25 lbs. in the seat for a good test. All strollers are easy to push when empty, but who really pushes an empty stroller? Go all the way around the perimeter of the store with the loaded stroller; you need to know how it handles. Any funny looks you get will be more than worth it if you avoid wasting money on a stroller that does not meet your needs.

IMO, a stroller to be used at theme parks MUST recline in some way. Kids fall asleep in their strollers at WDW; it's inevitable. Spend a bit extra to get a recline.

Of the lower-priced umbrella strollers on the market in the US, the Chicco Caddy is probably the best buy. The Chicco London would be even better. http://www.babyride.com/brand-chicco.html (BTW, if you have a Value City near you, you might want to call, I just saw some Londons at mine for under $30.) The stroller the earlier poster mentioned buying at WalMart was almost certainly either a Kolcraft or a Cosco; Graco didn't make anything that fit that description until very recently, when they came out with their "Umbroller" series": http://www.gracobaby.com/products/subcategory.asp?No=6&N=44+57&act=A20

PS: If you're worried about wheels falling off, avoid Gracos; they are the brand that most commonly has that problem. The reason for this is that they normally are packed without the wheels, and you have to attach them to the axle yourself. Most people don't do it correctly. (A stroller where you need to slip the whole wheel/brake assembly onto the vertical post should be fine, but beware of brands that want you to attach a wheel to an axle.)

Thanks for the suggestions. We'll def. try the stroller out first, but I don't think we'll have the hunching-over problem, as dh and I are both quite short (dh is the taller at 5' 4'').

I've never heard of Value City, so I don't think we have those around here. I'm planning on going to Target and Babies R Us sometime this long weekend to see what I can find. Dh HATES Wal-mart  .

We're going in April, so I don't know if I'll really need it, but should I get a rain cover?

Thanks for all the suggestions.
