They have continued to use the word, 'mansion' when refering to Bin Laden's residence. It doesn't look like anything I'd ever call a 'mansion.' Some may argue that the land/compound has been valued at 1million USD. Around here, that's still not a mansion. Some news folks have begun to call it a 'compound' which is more like the correct word.

Compared to the squalor of the area, I dont think its a stretch. The amount of land and the satellite capability etc. The place was self contained

Yeah, looked an awful lot like the Waco compound to me. I had the same thought that the standards to qualify as a 'mansion' in that part of the world must be pretty low.

Is this really something thats worthy of an argument? Do people actually care what it is being called? It must be a slow news day :confused3

It looks like a prison, seriously. It may be considered a "mansion" in Pakistan, but not in the Western world. Over here its just a small size prison. So yeah, a small prison would probably run you about $1 million. That wall alone was probably pretty expensive.

It was big and may be a mansion in that part of the world. Some people commented that it was a mess inside but much if not all of that might be due to the raid and gunfire.

You must think so since you have posted on the thread. Any angle is ok to discuss here. And actually, my husband and I had talked about this two days ago but I heard it discussed at length on Morning Joe this morning.
What would you rather discuss? I hadn't actually envisioned an argument here. thought it was a light topic.

I figure some in the media wanted us to be pissed he wasn't hidin' under a rock so they embellished it by callin' it a mansion, looks like a compound to me. :confused3

I guess the rule for Real estate in Pakistan isn't location, location, location.

Now you know that anything can lead to an argument on the DIS. ;)

The women were probably on stand by to be human shields, so not too much time to keep up with the housework.

They've actually retracted the human shield bit and now are saying that the wife charged toward the soldiers and did not act as a shield. It's weird that they got the story wrong to begin with. :confused3

You said "they" are still using the word, and some may argue that XYZ, I'm just wondering why something as trivial as what they are calling the building would be something anyone would argue about. If the media is discussing this at great length then to me it means they have nothing else to discuss, that was my point.
I think you took my post way too personal, my post wasn't about you, it was about "they".
And no, I'm not arguing, its pretty clear that I don't care what anyone chooses to call the place.

I can only assume that when word got out there was a woman there all sorts of stories came up. I haven't read that she "charged" them, but have read that she willingly got in front of them.

On a lighter note, The Daily Show on Monday had a Samantha Bee piece where she was trying to flip the house/mansion/compound. Aasif Mandvi also had a hilarious bit where he (Mandvi) had been holed up in the remote mountains of Afghanistan for years only to find out that bin Laden was living in a nice Pakistani suburb next to a golf course.

I googled the terminology that I read the other day. From ABC News: 'In the room with bin Laden was bin Laden's wife," said White House press secretary Jay Carney. "She rushed one of the U.S. assaulters and was shot in the leg, but not killed."'

It sounds like she moved rapidly towards them but it certainly could have been to block the gunfire, couldn't it? I also read that she was only in her 20's and was given as a gift to Bin Laden.

Read some of the comments from google - HILARIOUS!!! "Lack of heat and no protection from helicopters. Would not stay here again."

I think my favorite was:

Grand opening special! Newly renovated compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan! Only $600/month rent, with running water, electricity, and airconditioning. Minor scarring on walls in some rooms. Red stains on upholstery and floors in some rooms, can be assumed previous owner had some crazy parties and a taste for red wine.. Small number of doors missing hinges, but only those leading up to the second floor master bedroom. Free stealth Blackhawk included with courtyard! Working condition, but missing a few parts that can be easily replaced with basic mechanical knowledge of state-of-the-art confidential aircraft.
