The Running Thread - 2026

It’s the perfect day for a PR!

Today was the Get in Gear 5k in Minneapolis. I’ve run this race 3 times and I PR’d the 5k here last year. I’d been watching the weather all week, temps looked to be perfect but with a chance of rain. It ended up being 45 degrees, cloudy with a tiny bit of drizzle and no wind…perfection! We had a leisurely morning and took the light rail in. We made it just in time for bib pick up, bathroom visit and to drop a gear bag and then into the corral we went.

Things have been clicking for me so I was optimistic that I could run a 29:00 if conditions were perfect, see above! Last year I ran a 29:31 and I almost died but today we try for better. Easy downhill start and mile 1 was at 9:21. I was shooting for 9:30 so a little hot. Mile 2 is pretty flat like most of the course, it involves the turn around for the out and back. Still feeling good, it came in at 9:17. Course is a bit narrower on the last stretch but still cruising along, mile 3 at 9:04. The slight uphill finish I punched at 8:46!

Finished at 28:54! Thrilled with my time, felt really strong and probably left some out on the course but I feel like this may have been the race I’ve run the best.

It can be difficult—this year there was a waitlist of 2,000. I think it was a couple of tries before I got in. As @The Expert noted, flexibility can be helpful. You’re unlikely to get bib distribution, e.g., vs Gear Check shift 1.

There is also now an option to sign up as a group. Maybe next year we can try for a disboards group. I have volunteered for 5 years now…..maybe that would help get a group in.
I’m absolutely on board for a volunteer group!!!

Anyone doing the Indy mini next weekend? It will be my second year doing it. It is hands down one of my favorite races I’ve done!!! Running in the Indianapolis motor speedway and stopping to “kiss” the bricks is beyond amazing!!

And…Funny enough…just found out that our favorite rD announcer, Carissa Galloway, will be the announcer for this years race.

Amazing splits! 5Ks are very tough to pace and you smashed it out of the park.
