ABC cancels 'Ugly Betty'
ABC is making this the final season of "Ugly Betty." Here is a statement from ABC and producers:

"We’ve mutually come to the difficult decision to make this Ugly Betty’s final season, and are announcing now as we want to allow the show ample time to write a satisfying conclusion. We are extremely proud of this groundbreaking series, and felt it was important to give the fans a proper farewell."

The decision was increasingly anticipated given the show's meager ratings. ABC shifted "Betty" from Thursdays, where it struggled to provide an adequate lead-in for "Grey's Anatomy," to Fridays last fall, where it performed poorly, then tried recently moving the show to Wednesdays after the network's comedy block.

Now in its fourth season, "Betty" helped re-popularize the hourlong broadcast dramedy, a format that continues to find viewers this season with Fox's "Glee."

The writing was on the wall for this, for a while now. :( This is always the kiss of death for a show. Even successful shows, with great ratings, like The Practice, which got bounced around by the same ABC, loses ratings as it gets moved around. :sad2:

It's always too bad for the TV industry in NYC. We need every TV show we can get. So many good people in the industry here will be out of work. :(

Yeah, had heard the rumors...
darn....
I thought this would be the next step. Once they started bumping them all over to different nights.... That is the tell tale sign. Hope to see the cast in other shows.

I was so hooked on that show, until the writers' strike. Then I got re-hooked on "Survivor" and never went back. I do want to catch up with the seasons I missed tho. I didn't even know it had moved from Thursday nights.

I've heard rumors about this for a while. I'm not surprised though. Ugly Betty had really lost its steam.
I used to watch it alot, but like the poster above, i lost intrest after the strike.

I am very sorry to hear this news. I have been an "Ugly Betty" fan since the first show. Of course, moving the show from Thursday to Friday to Wednesday was the kiss of death.

What a disappointment. I love this show, and am sad to see it go.

NOOOOOO! I have been a Betty fan since the beginning! So sad to hear this!!!

I LOVE Betty and am SO sad to hear this. I really don't watch any other TV shows that aren't reality shows!!

That's too bad. I love the show, but it's had a decent run. Hopefully they really will give them the chance to finish the season and wrap the show up, though. I'd like that better than if it just vanished into thin air.

So many shows it seems screw up their finale. I thought Monk had an excellent ending. I hope they do a good job with Ugly Betty.

::yes:: Life on Mars, looked like it really rushed to create a finale for their series. :(

At least we have some notice and the writers have some time to wrap it up. Unlike Dirty, Sexy, Money.........why ABC do you cancel the shows I like?

I feel like a show killer....any show I like eventually will get canceled (Jericho, DSM, and now UB).

Bummer

Hopefully something other than a reality show will replace it. Not that I don't watch them, but I'd like something else, please!

They must have lost their great writers. I still like it but it's been weird-not good weird.

Even successful shows, with great ratings, like The Practice, which got bounced around by the same ABC, loses ratings as it gets moved around. :sad2:
That simply doesn't explain the situation with Ugly Betty. It lost 1/3 of its audience over its first three seasons, dropping from a moderately okay #35, down to a disappointing #52, before it was moved from its original time slot. Everything that has happened since it was moved from its original time slot falls into the category of "trying anything to save the show" because by rights the show could have been canceled just based on its uninspired performance Thursday at 8PM.
