He works in the health care field and looks like a 30% pay cut is coming. I am just sick to my stomach. Looking at the budget to see what can be trimmed.

Wow! That's HUGE! I'm so sorry.

I hope that they are giving you adequate warning so that you can get your financial house in order. Will his hours be reduced to reflect the cut or are they expecting him to continue working the same hours for almost 1/3 less pay?

Oh no.

We went through that - on a smaller scale - a few years ago.

Less then 30 day notice. He is expected to continue working the same number of hours. Which is generally 50+ a week.

It is so very very frustrating because he has worked so very hard for this hospital for 20 years. He has been a loyal employee even when competion has tried to steal him away. Loyalty doesn't mean much any more

Might be time to start looking for another field of employment. Expecting people to work the same number of grueling hours for 70% of what they used to earn is just insane! It will only get worse as people jump ship and the remaining crew is expected to pick up the slack. BTDT as a former hospital employee.

You are right. Loyalty doesn't mean anything anymore.

No it doesn't and that's a really sad reflection of our society, IMO.

I'm so sorry about the pay cut. That is a HUGE percentage. I have no idea what we'd do. My husband's previous employer was cutting pay and benefits and drastic cuts in insurance while having us pay much higher premiums. Each year of the last 3 his income decreased, but never by that much. I wish you success in the new budget.

we endured a year of a 10% pay cut for our single earner family income and that was tough! You may consider looking at ways to bring additional income into the household - it will be difficult to absorb a 30% cut without additional monies coming in.

So sorry but I know how you feel. I am getting a 25% pay cut plus loosing my health insurance benefits. It's. 30% loss in pay once I account for the health insurance that I now need to pay out of pocket.

You don't know what the pay was to start.. so this may be the case, but it may not. You are jumping the guns.

My companies bonues well over double our income.. and in a blink went down to pretty much 0, due to market.. For the last 3 ish months I am making prolly 30% or less of what I was making earlier this yr. I work almost as many hours, but I certainly am not jumping ship.. I get paid okay for the industry and when the business picks up again wether 6 months of 4 yrs from now.. bonuses will come back.

I am so sorry for your DH and your family. It may be time to look, but prior to that think about what he makes compared to what he could realistically make elsewhere.. prior to jumping ship from the cut. Also if the wage they will be paying him is fair for the market. At DH job the industry has gone down significantly in IT, where if he left now, even with piddle increases over the last 10 yrs, if they drop his salary nearly 30% it would still be fair to the market.

I am so sorry to hear it. That's a huge cut to absorb! I'm not sure looking elsewhere would help, though. Make sure he really does his homework if he's thinking about it because these sorts of cuts are so widespread, across all levels and so many different industries, these days. And while loyalty may not count for much on the pay scale, seniority still sometimes makes a difference when the layoff axe falls.

I hope you're able to find a way to adjust with minimal pain.

Sorry to hear about the cut. Unfortunately that seems to be the climate we live in now where it's so difficult for those without employment to find a job and those working feel the stress of being understaffed or having pay/ benefits reduced.

I would certainly have DH look around and see what his options are. It may be tough in the health fields with all the changes going on, but he should do what he feels is best for your family.

I had my pay cut several years ago when our company was not doing well. It wasn't so the owners could have more $$, it was just the climate and it was either cut or risk no job at all. There were no reduced hours, we all worked our butts off to make things better. We had shut downs around the holidays without pay. At least I was able to spend some good times with the family. Luckily, we were able to right the ship and things are pretty good right now. Prayers that your DH either finds new work similar to his precut salary or things improve with his existing situation.

I am sorry to hear this!

Hosptials all over the place are doing this. Here in Indiana each of the big hosptials have cut 500-800 jobs each and it's only going to get worse in health care jobs. We have a meeting tomorrow evening with HR about our jobs (I am a Nurse Practitoner). I have been told no one is loosing their jobs (yet anyway) but I do expect that my salary/benefits will be getting worse.

OP didn't say that her husband was not getting a bonus this year. She said that his PAY was being cut with less than 30 days' notice. It doesn't sound as if he was overpaid for whatever his role is within the healthcare industry. He was being pursued by the competition, which would have presumably been willing to negotiate a better salary. I think it may be time for the OP's husband to contact the competition to see what kind of options are available to him. It doesn't hurt to put feelers out. If he learns that the competition is cutting salaries the same amount, then he can at least feel better about maintaining his loyalty to the place he's currently working for.

OP, I'm so sorry this is happening to your dh. That is a huge pay cut. My dh took a 22% pay cut a few years ago and we survived it ok but we had to make a lot of adjustments to our budget. We had actually already been working on cutting so we had a bit of a headstart.

One of our friends is a doctor and he says it is an awful time to be in healthcare and the hospital he works at is cutting many jobs.
