Two hurricanes threaten Hawaii

Sending good vibes to one of my favorite destinations, my fingers are crossed the storms will weaken.

Oh no! My neighbors just left for there early this am! Hope they weaken is right!!

We are supposed to go on Friday but don't know if we will be able to or not....airline phone is busy....and right now we r in CA which is tooooo many points to get stuck at. Sigh.

I'm trying to figure out when the second one is forecast to hit? We arrive August 18 .....

Annie, hopefully your trip isn't impacted too much.

Update: the island of Oahu is now under a hurricane warning. We are expected to start getting the weather effects late Thursday night or Friday morning.

The second storm is right behind the first, expected to be here on Sunday the 10th. You should be fine for your trip.

Both storms are expected to weaken by the time they reach Oahu, however they have the potential for heavy winds, rain, flooding, and power outages.

We are at Aulani right now and are supposed to fly home on Friday. I spoke with our airline this morning, and they said it is very likely there will not be any flights on Friday. They couldn't get us out early and could possibly get us out Saturday but cannot get us back to Kansas City until Tuesday! They will partner with other airlines if conditions get really bad, so we are waiting it out. As for Aulani, they have our room available for Friday night for the low price of $1410. We have nine people, so we have to have a 2 bedroom. 3 studios was even more money. They are also saying that if conditions get bad, they may make accommodations. We will find out.

I will say that schools are already cancelled and the locals say no one is to be outside on Friday. Hoping the storm weakens big time or turns!

Having been through minor hurricanes (the last time at a hotel) I would suggest picking up some water and food to eat that won't go bad. Even though they have resort restaurants it is possible that there supply change along with demand might make It that they run out of food.

Also expect the resort amenities to be closed up (probably starting now) because they are going to have to secure everything that is outside or large glass openings.

Also just as a heads up I looked the storm up and Oahu is under a tropical storm warning not hurricane warning. They are only expecting winds at most 45 mph. Honestly it will probably just feel like a windy rainy day. I wouldn't get freaked out about the storm. If you are on the big island that could be another story.

Thinking about all who are there and trying to arrive...Sending POSITIVE THOUGHTS!!!:wizard::goodvibes:goodvibes

STAY SAFE!!!!:grouphug:

Thank you so much, compshu!! I feel a little better now. Aug 18, here we come!

Prayers that it won't be too bad and everyone there stays safe!

I think I know the grim answer, but I am a new DVC member so figured I'd ask anyway. We are scheduled to arrive at Aulani this Saturday, 8/8. What happens if we can't get there (or get there late) due to the weather - are my points just lost or do I have any other options ? We did not purchase any type of trip insurance :( Thanks .

My advice would be to call MS as soon as they open. If you didn't purchase trip insurance to cover the points, this very well could be a problem!:sad2:
Perhaps Aulani is "working" with members, although I can't imagine how they can do this if all these rooms are booked, etc. With this "rare" circumstance, I hope for you and all those traveling that somehow there will be some exceptions made or something. Don't want to mention trip insurance now, but in the future, imo I think trip insurance is INVALUABLE! We first started purchasing trip insurance when we took our first Disney Cruise in 2011...medical evacuation on a cruise, God Forbid, could put you in "bankruptcy"..
trip interruption...Keep in mind, that trip insurance is not only good for trip cancellation under "covered reasons" but for trip interruption as well...:scared1

GOOD LUCK!:thumbsup2 Hope that MS can give you more information...Would think
that Aulani has a "plan of action"!

I have the news feed from KITV Hawaii on my Facebook page and they are predicting that once the hurricanes hit Hawaii and Maui, their strength will diminish because of the mountains there. the mountains are so high they get snow. Also the waters around Hawaii for any storm coming from the east are cooler and should make the storms less intense. Prediction is for mostly lots of rain and possible landslides, which is pretty typical during the rainy season for Hawaii. They are equipped to handle it. I am sure the surfers are happy!

Now, if a hurricane approaches from the south, watch out! Those waters are very warm and can be pretty devastating. Kauai got hit with one more than 20 years ago (?) or so and the south shore got hit pretty bad.

Wishing Hawaii lots of Aloha thoughts for the next few days! Can't wait to get back to Aulani ... hopefully in 2015!

Did you call Member Services to see if they can get you a better price? How about using points?

I called MS 1st thing and they are making some exceptions due to the situation in Hawaii :) And yes, I've done 3 Disney cruises and always purchase trip insurance although thank God I've never had to use it... Thanks for the advice and well wishes !

I lived in Waikiki during Hawaii's last major hurricane - Iniki
I am having flashbacks from that time because the reporting is following the same exact way it did for Iniki. The problem is that you never know where the hurricane is going to make land fall. When I went to bed one night, there was a hurricane warning for the Big Island and tropical storm warning for Maui and Oahu. When I woke up to go to work the next morning, all of the Oahu schools were closed and Iniki was heading straight for Honolulu. When it actually hit land, it went right over Kauai.

I hope everyone stays safe, and that this is just a tiny blip on an amazing vacation.

We were "stuck" at Aulani back in early December due to the ice storm in Dallas cancelling flights. The front desk was very helpful in getting our party moved from a GV to a several studios for all but one night when we transferred next door to the JW Marriott. For those that are scheduled to check out during these weather events, I would highly recommend talking with the front desk in addition to member services about extending your stay.

We're in the middle of a split stay right now and I need to vent a bit about Member Services.

We arrived at Aulani on 8/2 for the first three nights of our Hawaii vacation. We then hopped over to Molokai for a planned three night stay. With the approaching storm we decided to cut the Molokai portion short and see if we could get into Aulani a night earlier than planned. The forecast for Molokai calls for flash flooding which could potentially wash out the one road that could get us from our rental to the airport... possibly stranding us for days.

We called the resort last night at about 10PM Hawaii time, and they said there were plenty of rooms available, so we went to bed planning to call MS in the morning when we woke up.

This morning, I called MS and got the royal run around! I was put on hold for a long time, then the representative got back on the line and asked about the fact that we had previously had the night wait listed, then confirmed and then cancelled... all true, but the wait list and reservation all happened in February and the cancellation happened about 12 weeks ago... as I'm sure most people can understand an island vacation can be about flexibility and finding what works... the great thing about DVC is the ease with which you can take advantage of that flexibility without any costs.

After another long hold, the rep got back on and said that there were NO rooms available at all... not for points, not for cash. I was frustrated and asked why he had needed an explanation about the previous wait list, reservation and cancellation... he said that his manager had wanted "their whole story"!

I was upset that the previous gyrations had had any impact on our situation at all... the manager smelling a fish that there was some gaming of the system going on.

I hung up, called the Aulani cash booking line and after explaining the situation, was again put on hold and this time told that cash reservations were available... for $470 for a studio for the night.

Knowing that there was a way around the block on new reservations, I decided to call the front desk and speak to guest services. A third time I explained our situation... calmly and clearly, and this time, the guest services manager worked some Disney magic and within a half hour we got a call back directly from the resort that we were confirmed for a 1-bedroom in our same category for the extra night... we won't even need to change rooms.

Overall, I feel like I just got stuck with an uncaring manager in Member Services who is too removed from the scramble on an island destination when a hurricane is coming. I understand that there are lots of things going on, but feel like MS met us with suspicion and a lackadaisical attitude rather than trying to help out people who have been members in good standing for 20 years. We were told that they had contacted the resort directly and that there was nothing they could do to help us.

The folks in the resort were gracious and quick to help.

I've never had a less satisfying interaction with MS, but ultimately I'd say to be polite and be tenacious if you need help with something special at DVC... be prepared to explain yourself multiple times if necessary and keep your cool.

Now we can relax and not worry about getting stranded on Molokai with no where to stay... and hey, there may be a hurricane coming, but we'll be at Aulani for 5 more nights!

Ted
