This really bothers me for some reason, lol. In my British Literature class I discovered, via syllabus, that we were going to read some Shakespeare by the end of the first semester...I pathetically got very excited since I am a huge Shakespeare fan. However, it's now reaching the end of the first semester and here we are...reading Romeo and Juliet. Shoot me please? This is my least favorite tragedy with A Midsummer Night's Dream being my least favorite comedy and if A Midsummer didn't exist, R&J would be my least favorite play overall! I can't stand it. It's not one of Shakespeare's best, it doesn't play up Shakespeare's best features as a writer, and it has no where near the substance displayed in some of his other plays. (not to mention it's overrated, cliche, and has been told a million and one times through every medium on earth). This is the only Shakespeare play we are reading in this class since it isn't a Shakespeare course. This is the play we are being exposed to. I read R&J when I was a freshman in high school...this Brit. class is an upperlevel course in college...seriously, R&J?

Sorry, it's just really frustrating me that we aren't working on a more exciting play...such as King Lear or Twelfth Night <3 lol.

Anything about your classes just really annoy you more than you think it should? lol.

I'm actually taking a Shakespeare class and we did R&J the 3rd week of school. I don't mind it as a play, I think it's pretty interesting to analyze...but totally overrated.

What irks me about that class is that we're not reading my TWO FAVOURITES (Hamlet & The Merchant of Venice!!) Also something that really irks me is that we have to read like a gazillion sonnets. And it makes me very angry.

My french course is really irritating me lately too, because it's UNIVERSITY french and we were learning how to conjugate verbs in the present tense....soemthing I learned in grade 4!! It's good because I'm getting great marks, but I'd like to be learning something NEW!!!

Yeah we read Romeo and Juliet when I was in 8th grade. I didn't really like it.

I HATE Romeo and Juliet. It's kinda turned me away from Shakespeare. However, We're reading The Taming of the Shrew in a few months, and I'm kinda excited.

Hopefully its better.

I loved Romeo&Juliet, although we had to deeply analyze it, it was definitely worth it.

Yes!!! My spanish class does that. I absolutely hate it and next semester will be my last. I'm done. I feel like we never really get anywhere. Its just the same old, same old. I don't even go half the time because the prof will put the lecture and notes online, plus what is due. I only show up for quizzes and exams.

I was hoping to learn alot more, but alas we're not.

On a scale of 1-10, Romeo and Juliet would be a solid EH, brought down from a MEH by that abysmal Leonard DiCaprio movie.

It's one of his weakest plays, just like how Freebird is Lynyrd Skynyrd's weakest song, but everyone loves it.

The Taming of the Shrew and The Merchant of Venice are the ones we've read so far in school. And those are awesome. R&J is ok, but it's nowhere near his best. And it's just really, really sappy.

We had to do
A midsummer nights dream
and
um...
The tempest.

ididntreally like either of them.
But i dont really like English.. so yeah.

Ahaha that was in my field show this year for band.

It's hard for me to understand Shakespeare's language so it's hard for me to read. I love Sonnet 18 though.

I'm not a huge British Literature fan.

We read Romeo and Juliet in 9th grade and read some more of his plays and sonnets sophomore year. We also have to watch and read Julius Caesar...boring. I hate analyzing plays.

You're kidding me right?
PRESENT TENSE?
I learned that, I am almost sure, in grade 3.
I wouldn't have the patience for that. Last year we were studying the P-C and it was driving me nuts.
Present is two steps backwards =O

We read R&J last year, completely overrated. The movie was dull too, DiCaprio is a good actor, but not in that movie. I just don't really like the play.

Julius Caesar, however, I love that one.

I saw only the balcony scene in that movie. AND HOLY CRAP IT WAS BAD. I like the 1968 version, however, because

1. The acting is actually pretty good
2. The horribly overwrought kissing scenes are hilarious
3. Olivia Hussey IS pretty hot. And no, I have not seen "that scene." I've only watched parts of the movie in school (haven't finished reading the whole play yet... but I love to read ahead :teeth:). Why would they show us that in school? My English teacher said that we're skipping that part. xD

We did Romeo and Juliet and Macbeth in high school. I hate RJ, but enjoyed macbeth.

We did R&J last year (English I Honors).

It was fairly good...watched the 1968 and 1996 movies.

We're doing Julius Ceasar this year (possibly, as it's American Lit).
Macbeth next year (Brit Lit).
Hamlet in Senior year (World Lit).

Ugh. I personally, can not stand Shakespeare's work. We read Romeo and Juliet in 8th grade. It was okay, but I was bored with it. We read Julius Caesar in 9th. BORED ME TO TEARS! I was so frustrated with it. It's hard for me to comprehend his writing, I don't like it.

My problem? Well, it really is my problem. I basically jumped from Spanish I to Spanish III. I'm lost in most things, but I don't want to drop the class because I'm still passing with a C for now.

I've seen the scene you are referring to, don't get your hopes up. It's for a half a second.

We watched the old version. I wouldn't have minded it as much if it had been the one with DiCaprio and Claire Danes.
