Turning off Traction Control?

I read in the automotive section of the paper this morning from an owner of a Grand Prix, that he gained at least 3 miles more per gallon by turning off the traction control. The downside is, you have to do this every time you start the car, but three miles per gallon is nothing to ignore. I don't think I would do it on a rainy day.
