Should we stay downtown or closer to the university for a Sunday evening to Friday morning stay later this month? (We don't plan to be there over the weekend.) DH will be working during the day, so we're not interested in daytime activities. Our focus is on good restaurants & a variety of nightlife (music, comedy, shows, etc.) within easy walking distance.

Wherever you can find a place; neither Champaign nor Urbana is particularly large, and hotels fill fast.

Hotels around the university tend to get full in summer because of camp programs that take place on campus; the parents come to drop-off, pick them up on weekends, and a lot stay over. There are also a lot of continuing education programs there. They have one smallish on-campus hotel that those attendees primarily use, but overflow ends up wherever they can fit.

Champaign is not exactly known for its night life. Other than University venues for the performing arts, and private venues near by, I'd say the best place for some live music is the Rose Bowl Tavern over in Urbana. There is a traveling comedy group that comes from time to time. But it's hit and miss whether you can find a good comedy show.

Thanks to both of you for the feedback. As of this moment, it appears we can book a hotel in any location. I just want to make sure we're in an area that is easily walkable to dining & some type of evening entertainment. If you had to choose one location to stay in around the city, considering our preferences, where would you choose?

We've decided to spend the first week at a hotel .1 miles from Rose Bowl Tavern. We'll decide on the second week, after we've had a chance to drive around & check out the area. We're open to suggestions for places to eat &/or things to do.

Which hotel are you going to stay in?

Hotel Royer Urbana Champaign, Tapestry Collection by Hilton. I was looking for something close to Rose Bowl Tavern. We can still cancel, if there's a better choice.

Courier Cafe may be a great option for you guys. The restaurant is situated in what used to be a newspaper building and it has some nice items like burgers and salads. Only a short walk up S Race St from your hotel…

Thanks. I'll look it up.

What do you think about the general location of the hotel. Will we have much to walk to?

Do you think it's a good choice?
