So my grandson who is 18 and myself are going Thursday to finish the process for the TSA pre check 5 year document. we are not traveling until April so I know we have time. My question is what exactly happens at the airport once you have been issued a "known traveler number" and am I supposed to import that somewhere when I check in for my flight on Jetblue the day before leaving? thanks

I have it listed in my profile for each airline that I travel on routinely. If you don't want to do it that way, there is usually a place to list it when making airline reservations, on the same page you list your name, address, etc.

If you have already booked your flights, you can call the airline and have them add your KTN once you receive it. When I received my KTN, I had to call Southwest and add it. It was a super quick and easy phone call.

Not sure about other airlines specifically, but Southwest as a field in your Profile to add your KTN. After it's added, any future flights you book will automatically include it. I always double check as I'm going through the book process just out of an abundance of caution though. :)

I know from recent experience that you can just enter it into your jet blue account and it will port over to your already made reservation. Easy!

Just an FYI they will send you a letter with your KTN, but it is not a document you will or can use at the airport. So if on the off chance you forgot to call and add it it's not like you can show a document at security and be allowed to go through Pre-Check. The Pre-Check desigination has to be printed on your boarding pass.

But yet I had to call them to get the bonus points awarded on my TrueBlue account for getting the Ever More Space seats that they never credited. :D:D:D

The airlines are SUPPOSED to enter your TT# into the reservation if it is listed on your FF account. However, it doesn't always happen, as I discovered last week on a Delta flight, so you need to double-check that it is noted when you get your boarding pass. I was in a hurry for my recent flight, so I used the BP on my phone, and as I've had PreCheck since shortly after the program started, I'm now accustomed to it, and I just went straight into the PreCheck security line without looking too hard at the screen. The agent who checked my BP and ID waved me on, but when I got to the actual checkpoint, I got sent back because my BP *did not* show PreCheck, and I had to do the whole shoe/jacket/3-1-1 baggie/laptop thing. Oddly, on my return flight the status WAS on the BP, without my saying anything to the airline.

Also note that during certain times at a given airport, TSA will sometimes close the PreCheck line, and even if you have PreCheck status, you'll have to go through the regular line and do the regular routine. This happened to us earlier this year at MSP when we went through the line at 6 am on a Sunday. We were informed that the PreCheck line was closed because it was a slow time. Busiest "slow" time I've ever seen -- it took nearly an hour to get through Security.

@NotUrsula also remember just because you have Pre-check does not mean you will get it all the time. That could have been one of those times or a fluke.

I love JB...my preferred airline, but you do have to watch them!! Back in Sept, you may remember a little thing called Irma. My friend and I were in WDW the week prior, leaving on a cruise on Sept 8.....that got cancelled, so we had to find rooms at WDW. Ok. Well, the airlines started cancelling flights for that Sat. We knew that our original flights out, on Monday, weren't happening. That was the worst day for Irma. So, we waited to hear from JB...we didn't hear from them, so booked alternate flights for Wednesday morning, knowing that JB wouldn't credit us if we cancelled the Monday flights. So, continued waiting. On Sunday night, they finally cancelled the Monday flights, as well as Tuesday flights. And it looked like I was credited the correct amount. Well, Wednesday's flights were cancelled, at least the morning ones. My friend was on the phone with JB, and was told that 'oh, by the way, I see that your Wednesday morning flight is cancelled'..so she was able to get a new flight for Wed afternoon. By the time she told me about the cancellations, about 30 mins later, I wasn't able to get a flight out on Wed. I called JB and the rep said she would feel better if I could fly on Friday...that would be a sure thing vs Wed, which wasn't going to be a sure thing. So, since I had no issue with staying a few night longer, I said sure. Well....my friend and I had used points to rebook the Wed flights, that replaced the Mon flights since we hadn't gotten a credit when we had to rebook. I used points for the flight I rebooked on Friday. I figured that I would have a nice credit in my JB travel bank when I returned home. Nope...not only did it take almost double the points to change to the Friday flight (since I changed the airport I flew into), the credit in my JB account no longer showed!!! I waited and waited but nothing. I finally emailed them, explaining my issue. Their response? 'As a show of good will we are crediting your account for that Monday flight.'. Seriously? Good will? They cancelled it, not me!! And I tried to be proactive by booking a flight for after the storm, using my points, because there was no credit issued, even though JB told all of us that there would be a full credit for any flights they cancelled due to Irma!!!
Yep, you have to watch 'em...always watching!!!!
