trying to get a refund on a air ticket

We bought US Airways tickets for Europe and they were $1300 each last August, we will not be able to use them, I called and they said I could get a new flight till August this year with a $250 change fee, but could not get the money back because they were non refundable tickets.

Could I buy new refundable tickets minus the change fee, then cancel them and get the money?

Afraid not. The funds are tied to the orginal purchased ticket (non refundable) rules.

You can however use the money for another trip but you can not get your money back.
