Pathetic.

I was on a HiFi forum I frequent, asking for information about minidisks. Started out all polite and informative. Good thread. Learning a lot :)

Then one person said the average price for a player should be about "60$".

Someone IMMEDIATELY snapped at them, calling them names simply for the context of the phrase "60$" as opposed to the conventional "$60". Very rude terms were exchanged at light speed. And all because someone had a bee in their bonnet and could hide behind an anonymous tag name.

Sad.

The teacher in me inwardly cringes when the $ is behind the dollar amount but there is never a need to be rude and honestly I see it behind way more the "correct" way any more

I don’t understand why people feel the need to be rude to each other on the internet.

In English, the symbol for the currency, whether it is dollars, euros, or pounds, should be written to the left of the number, so $60 would be correct if the conversation is in English. Other languages may position the currency mark in other locations, such as on the right or even in the middle instead of a decimal. It is possible that a person could be in a country with alternate placement and translating their post from their native language to English before posting, and the translation software doesn’t pick up on the currency issue. Perhaps they speak English as a second language so they write their post, and the difference in how to post currency just slipped their mind. I am sure I am not the only one who has noticed a mistake right after hitting Send.

There are so many reasons why a person could post it one way or the other that I would just let it go. I don’t see that it’s worth fighting about on a forum. The only time to get picky about something like that is if it involves a binding contract, and it is still best to be polite about it.

To go off on a complete tangent. Are there still Minidisc players being manufactured? I was a huge proponent of them in the late '90's. I still have some pre-recorded discs I bought from Sam Goody, they seemed like a fantastic medium right up until CD burners became readily available. At one point I had a portable player, home player and 6 disc changer in my car.
