When we hit Germany, we were spotted by DISer Erin_W, who was visiting with her fiancée and mom to plan her Disney wedding (shot by The Roots!)!

We were all headed for the same place—the Karamell Kuche. Yes, even I was lured there despite my earlier disappointment with their cupcakes. It's just so dang inviting! Everything looks like it's going to be delicious, at least…

Sadly, the caramel corn was no better than the standard packaged stuff Disney sells all over the resort, and it was not even as good as the Arclight's caramel corn! The peanut butter caramel crunch cookie was dry and bland, with barely a hint of peanut butter. Patrick thought his chocolate-covered strawberry was OK, but it wasn't enough to keep the Karamell Kuche off my Top 10 Most Overrated Disney Desserts list!

I can't tell you how excited I was when I found out Howard Jones would be performing the night that D23 got us seats to Eat to the Beat. Not only would I actually pay to see him, I already have! I was a HUGE Howard Jones fan in my youth, and I have fond memories of the day my Dad drove me all over Sacramento looking for a Howard Jones poster I could see in my mind's eye and was convinced must exist! (Sadly, not enough other people in 1989 were huge Howard Jones fans to merit the creation of such a poster—or any poster of HoJo…)

Patrick and I got to America Gardens Theater in time to catch the end of his first performance, which got me even more amped.

Don't worry, HoJo fans—there's more where this came from!

D23 got us much better seats at Eat to the Beat than at last year's Candlelight Processional. We had the front of the middle-middle section, and some of us *may* have gone to stand at the back of the very front section later in the evening when everyone else was on their feet…

When we got there, Tricia and Christine were sitting next to none other than AllEars Deb!

I'll try not to bore you with all 7 bazillion photos Patrick took of the show, but I'm kind of excited about how many good ones he got!

Heck, even the stage set made me feel like it was 1989 all over again!

"I wear my sunglasses at night…" Wait a minute, that's another '80s band!

One thing I remember from the first time I saw HoJo in concert was… he's so short in real life!

This guy prolly wasn't even born when Howard Jones had his first hit…

This guy is reeeeeally wishing he had something cooler to do than stand behind a laptop all night.

Howard Jones played all his big early-career hits but not as much stuff from his late-'80s revival for my taste (but that's just cuz that was when I discovered him). Bless his heart, though, he didn't inflict any new stuff on us!

People started standing in the aisles about two-thirds of the way through the show. This is when Trish, who is also a longtime HoJo fan, grabbed my hand and dragged me up to where everyone was dancing awkwardly at the front. I, too, danced awkwardly.

It was a ton of fun! I've never really gotten that into a concert at Disney before, and it was a little surreal to have my old music-loving hipster lifestyle coincide with my new Disney-loving dork lifestyle. But the dorkiest part was still to come…

After the concert, we were escorted next door to Italy Isola for the capper to D23's Sip & Stroll, an IllumiNations dessert party!

This was one of the main reasons I bought tickets to the event—Italy has one of the best views of the show. (Interestingly, the 2011 Sip & Stroll dessert party will take place in France, which doesn't have nearly as good a view—could this be one of the reasons the event has yet to sell out?) Unfortunately for those of us with less refined palates, D23 decided to bring in a bunch of the same desserts we'd turned up our noses at the previous night at the 3D Disney Dessert Discovery party. There were a lot of weird shots of liqueur and coffee-flavored stuff.

With nothing to speak of to eat, I had time to dash back to American Adventure to make a pit stop. As I headed back toward Italy Isola, the crowd suddenly parted, and there, walking straight toward me, was Howard Jones! I should have known by his pace that he had somewhere to be, but I couldn't help myself, blurting out, "YOU'RE Howard JONES!!!" He kept walking, so I pathetically began walking backward to keep pace, stating the bleedin' obvious for good measure: "You're going somewhere, aren't you? Well, um… great show!" I stammered and then bolted in the opposite direction. D'oh!!! Totally embarrassing. Thank gawd he forgot the moment as soon as it happened.

Back in Italy, my shame was somewhat mitigated by knowing I had secured THE best view of IllumiNations from the Isola for all of us.

This turned out to be one of those marathon Disney days that just keep going. Trish was off to shut down the Magic Kingdom, while we had a date at Beaches & Cream for Second Dessert (first for me!) with our pals Jonni & Taz!

You may remember Jonni from my first solo trip report, Wedding Crasher: 4 Parties in 3 Nights with 2 Cameras and 1 Fabulous Hat!. She and Taz have a home near Walt Disney World, so it was easy for them to meet us at the Beach Club for a frozen nightcap.

This was our first time getting to sit down with Jonni and Taz and really have a conversation with them, and it was a blast! We had so much in common, we were chattering like magpies. Hungry, ice cream-eating magpies... AND I got French fries and a peanut butter chocolate milkshake—what could be bad?

These photos have me all twitchy with excitement to eat my way around the world in a few weeks.... its been two years since I was at the F & W so I am really looking forward to it!

Oh, I forgot to add that I collect the Oaxacan animals too... though I have never bought one at WDW... I recently came home with a little porcupine! TOO cute, they are so hard to resist.

have to say I am saddened by the Mickey Crispies being on your 10 overated Disney treats...really I love my Mickey Crispies...yes I agree MY homemade rice krsipies rock but these sweet shaped yummies hit the spot for me and if they can last 8 months in my closet in my secret "need a Disney fix" box...that is pretty awesome or scary or I'm plain crazy

also would love to hear your 411 on the whole wedding cake thing...so Matt and i will be ordering a anniversary cake for our trip which i plan to do the end of the month...I have done research...maybe not enough (it's quite overwhelming)...I have had my share of good and bad cakes all over (not just to WDW)...so I hoping for something yummy...but am thinking this is more for the experience vs the "cake"

eating at Naraccossee's so plan to order from GF bakery...any thoughts, tips...love to hear. feel free to post here or PM me (if you can) TIA

OK, so, yes—my feeling is that Disney cakes are more for the experience than the cake. They're not horrible, they're just not that great. The GF is a good bet because they can really do just about anything, design-wise.

The sticky part is getting your order by the GF Private Dining employee who takes the orders. Sometimes people call up and ask for X, Y, and Z with a non-standard flavor and have no problems. Other people are told they only have a couple flavor choices and that the decorations will be [insert astronomical sum]. I think maybe this person is just someone who has a ... different.... communication style that is complicated by the limitations of using the phone. If they don't understand what you're asking for right off the bat, they seem to get flustered and shut down your every request. I wish I could tell you exactly how to phrase your request for the smoothest experience, but I've had my own communication difficulties w/GF Private Dining!

Do you have any ideas so far?

I love love love the cats too...I have the white one and the black and white owls. I bought them cause they meant something, but for the life of me I cant remember what.
For the patches...glue those suckers in a scrapbook with a picture or two from where you got each one.
I havent found one piece of cake or cupcake at Disney that I liked and they are never fresh... I do love the Karamelle Kuche though. I love caramel and the place smells yummy, but it is rather expensive. I think a caramel apple is over a dollar more there than anywhere else in the parks.

thanks for the answer...my husband matt and i need to go over the details this week but am looking for someting classic and simple so hopefully they can't mess that up. I love the little two tier "wedding" cakes i have seen on the cake threads like this:

but a) it seems teeny and b) I don't like the flowers on top

I love the mini Mickey's on this:

and think we could have more fun w/ that...

topper wise, I like the chocolate castle:

but Matt doesn't

I'd like to go a marble cake (I like white, Matt like chocolate) and have a filling w/ fresh strawberries I know that may be costly...but that is what we had in our wedding cake Just a regular frosting would be fine too. I don't care for frosting much so doesn't much matter to me.

I have seen those really cool HM cakes and would be funny to get a bride/groom cake since we are going as them at MNSSHP and its for our anniversary but

I have two numbers jotted down the reg cake order line and the direct to the GF bakery I believe...should I go w/ the latter?

No worries! Call the direct line—it's actually to Private Dining, which runs interference for the bakery. The person you'll speak to works in Private Dining and relays all the info to the bakery.

If it helps, those mini cakes are plenty for two people. I know they look small, but if you split 'em straight down the middle, it's like getting two regular slices of cake (with a lot more frosting!). And I tend to agree with Matt on that particular white chocolate castle—it's so rough-hewn as to be practically unrecognizable... probably something to do with how small it is...

Getting fresh strawberries shouldn't be any more expensive than any other kind of cake. It's really the decorations that bump up the price. The two mini cakes you posted are among the least expensive mini cakes Disney makes, just cuz the decorations are so simple.

Today was one of those fantastic Disney days that are packed full of fun activities but never feel rushed. It was also Patrick's day to explore the wide-angle camera lens some more, which means this installment is filled with a lot more on-ride shots than he usually takes.

When we woke up, there were tons of hot-air balloons in the sky over the BoardWalk—cool!

Wow—that's SOME zoom!

We started the day by riding the bus to the Magic Kingdom for rope drop. It was the typical scenario where the park looked like it was sooooo crowded, but then everyone dispersed and we felt like we had the place practically to ourselves.

Our first order of business was to shoot a video walkthrough of the Swan Boat Landing wedding ceremony site for my Disney Wedding Venues page, but I can't show it to you because I forgot to edit it until I typed this sentence. Gulp!

Then we went to see Winnie the Pooh, which was in the process of having its soon-to-be-broken interactive queue elements installed behind construction walls.



It's like stepping into Disney California Adventure!

Once again, it was a blustery day in the Hundred Acre Wood…

Every time I see this scene, I vow to have a pink cake with chocolate frosting for my next birthday… and I always forget to actually do it!

Fantasyland was still pretty much a ghost town, and we walked right on to Snow White and Mickey's Philharmagic (OK, maybe that's not much of a coup…).

Haunted Mansion was also a walk-on. The invisible horse was out by the fence begging for invisible sugar cubes…

"Pardon our dust while we install another interactive queue instead of, you know, building a new ride to relieve crowding"

We got to ride Big Thunder twice, it was so deserted!

Patrick talked me into going on Splash even though I *hate* getting wet. I mean, you trowel on the makeup for a day of fun in the parks and the next thing you know, it's streaking down yer face. Oh wait, maybe that's just me…

I've got my Headless Guest Halloween costume on!

On the way to or maybe from Pirates of the Caribbean we stopped to get new-and-improved wide-angle shots of the Pirates League.

Then it was off to a dangerous place to be headed…

In case the photo's too small to read these directions on how to pin trade, I will add them here…

"1) Find the sweatiest cast member you can, preferably one with a broken wrist.

2) Slug the cast member in the gut with your massive bear paw, then yank his lanyard near its lowest point.

3) The cast member will gladly give you any pin you want just to get you to leave him alone. Be sure that both of you pierce your fingers on the pin backs as you exchange pins."

Looks like we went on Peter Pan, prolly with a FASTPASS (yes, there will be a quiz)…

We rode Space Mountain again, even though we always complain bitterly through the whole thing about how jerky and battering the ride is.

"W-w-w-hy d-d-d-id w-w-we r-i-d-d-d-e th-th-th-is a-g-g-g-ain…?"

At lunch time we had our now-customary midday meal at the Plaza Restaurant, where we swaggered in, took our seats, thumped the table and announced, "The usual, my good man!" to a blank stare from our server… Perhaps he didn't recognize us without The Roots, whom we now miss terribly every time we eat at the Plaza.

After our gut-busting lunch, all we were up for was a tour of the Dorothea Redmond mosaics in Cinderella Castle.

The castle HATES it when you take its picture from this angle—just look at all those chins!

Now the castle is playing coy…

"Does this shot make my waterway look too wide?"

Castle: "I can tell you're still taking a picture of me!!!"
Lamp: "Shut UP! They're taking a picture of ME!"

Edge of Tomorrowland: "Hey, I look like THIS—you think *I* care if anyone takes a picture of me?"

If this were in the real world and it didn't have Cosmic Ray's inside, I would want to go to there.

Castle: "I can still seeeeee you!!!"

Finally it was time for the D23 tweet-up. It was exciting to actually be in the Magic Kingdom when one of these happened, though I s'pose that was kind of a given, what with this being Sip & Stroll weekend and all. (Speaking of which, have I mentioned that, 2 weeks after they went on sale, this year's $195 Sip & Stroll tickets are *still* not sold out? I think the word must be spreading about the PowerPoints….). In true D23 fashion, all the fans were already lurking about the Swan Boat Landing well before Jeffrey was due to show up.

I think we played some trivia games for pins (not patches—PINS!!!), and he revealed the agenda for that year's Magic & Merriment event, which had me mentally planning a quick trip back until Patrick pointed out that the only new things were brunch at Top of the World Lounge and a sure-to-be-foodless reception inside the Walt Disney Story.

Somewhere in the middle of the tweet-up I discovered that the jig was up when Jeffrey made a comment about seeing "those of you I know and those of you who think I don't know you—Lurkyloo!!!" Gulp.

The tweet-up freebie he handed out turned out to be the same pack of reproduction post cards they gave us at Destination D in Disneyland (not that I'm complaining, Jeffrey, we were just hoping it would be another patch. Honest!), but he also gave us each 2 FASTPASSes good for any ride—whohoo!

I think we must've saved the FASTPASSes for later, because at that moment we were headed out of the Magic Kingdom and back to the room to change.

As you may recall from my disastrous inaugural water park experience at Typhoon Lagoon on our honeymoon, I may not really be a water park kinda gal (don't like being wet, barefoot, cold, in a bathing suit, under water, on my tummy, exposed to the sun, etc., etc. …). But Patrick absolutely adores them and is always angling to go whenever we're at Disney World. Considering that admission was free for us with our Premier Passes, I really couldn't say no.

This time, I was primed and ready to discover unplumbed depths of love for the water park experience. The theming was sure to be amazing! It was going to be fun to see Patrick having fun! And it was only going to be open about 90 minutes longer!

Wait—where are we again… Goofy's Candy Co.?

Unfortunately, 5 minutes into our trip, I got caught off guard by the chair lift and scraped a huge chunk outta my big toe (why is there cement under those things anyway?). So I spent the rest of the day hobbling around on 9 toes cuz there wasn't time to waste going all the way back to the front of the park for First Aid (seriously—none of the lifeguards at any of the slides carry Band Aids?).

The first slide we rode was the second-highest one, Slush Gusher, on which you get battered with water jets while your butt catches major air at least twice. Next up was the tallest one, Summit Plummet, which also features battery by water jets.

We took a break to ride a raft in Teamboat Springs. I liked that one. Niiiiice and gentle. Then it was back for more punishment on the one you do lying on your tummy and get a huge blast of water in your snoot and splash down coughing so hard that you scare the crap outta the lifeguard. Or maybe that's just me…

In the end, Patrick had a swell time and I lived to tell the tale… the tale of how I am DEFINITELY, 100% not a water-park person.

We went back to the room and got cleaned up. Patrick made a quick trip to Downtown Disney to trade with the pin sharks outside, uh, Mickey's Pin-porium & Olde Tyme Vinylmation Station. Turns out they finally got banned! (Now the only place to trade is inside Epcot.) Meanwhile I was frantically dialing the Walt Disney Travel Co. to make a hotel reservation during Magic & Merriment before Patrick could get back and talk some sense into me again.

The plan that evening was to try out the new Hacienda de San Angel and see what its view was like for IllumiNations. Patrick's always excited about Mexican food, and I'm always excited about good views of fireworks! We made the reservation for 8pm, which turned out to be perfect timing for IllumiNations at 9pm.

Oh look! They have El Torito in Mexico too!

We started with an authentic amuse bouche the natives like to call "chips and salsa"… These weren't particularly memorable, but, hey—at least they weren't Tostitos!

That's right—no machines assembling the margaritas HERE!

Hands-down the swankiest-lookin' menus on property (and I've been to Victoria & Albert's!)

Botana: A sampling of traditional Mexican favorites: chicken tostada, Chilorio sope (marinated pork), and cheese empanada

The appetizer was great, there just wasn't enough of it (especially at $9.99)! For dinner we split two dishes so we could try more things.

Pescado a la Talla: Grilled tilapia served with esquites (roasted corn), nopales (cactus leaves), and mango chutney

This was excellent! The fish wasn't dry, the flavors were sophisticated and blended nicely, and it was nice to eat something totally new to us at Disney.

Arrachera: Flank steak served with spring onions, tamal with rajas, cactus leaves, and beans

I liked this too—it was actually medium rare like we'd asked and quite flavorful. It just wasn't as exotic and unusual to our palates as the fish.

I don't know if Hacienda de San Angel's food is really authentic, but it's a great departure from the usual Tex Mex fare at Disney World.

We were very lucky to be seated right by the window, but I'll bet it's still a pretty decent fireworks view from the middle of the restaurant.

When the show started, they turned down the lights and turned up the IllumiNations soundtrack. I took the camera cuz I was closest to the window and cared the most about taking pictures. I only had a little trouble shooting through the glass at first, but then… WOW! Admittedly, I used zoom on a lot of these shots, but the view from Hacienda de San Angel is SO good!

Luckily our desserts arrived right at "the boring part" of IllumiNations (according to *some* people!).

Chocolate con Churros: Traditional Mexican hot chocolate accompanied by fresh churros and cajeta (caramel) sauce (modified to include ice cream)

I'm not a fan of Mexican hot chocolate, so I had them spruce this dessert up with a big pile o' ice cream. SOOOOOOO good!

Pretty friggin' cool, right? I would totally recommend dinner and IllumiNations at Hacienda de San Angel! On the way out we got a chance to take my favorite kind of location photos—the kind with no people in them.

Seems like you guys had a great day!! We really enjoyed La Hacienda too, aren't those star lamps cool? I was curious as to what the Illuminations view was, looks great!

The globe part is SO not boring! That's my favorite part, and I always get all annoyed when people around me start sighing and looking at their watches. I'm like "look at the globe, people! I think that was a zebra just running across!"
