Trick-Or-Treat & Birthday Sweets! Oct 2013 PTR *NEW* 11/4 TR Link Posted!

OMG - Paxton did really pass out. Poor little guy. I can remember when my boys were that age and they LOVED those kiddie rides. Cutest thing ever!

Glad you rode all the coasters and didn't have much of a wait. Looks like a great day at Dollywood and I know exactly what is there. You know - in case I ever end up back in that area.

What's the deal with the train and not to pull the chain if you get soot in your eyes? Huh? :rotfl: That sounds safe. :rotfl:

Great update!

Good to hear that the second try at Dollywood had better results. But, I agree that I won't be putting this place on my to do list unless we happen to be in the area for something else.

And those flying elephant and the Emporium gift shop near the park entrance/exit shows that they are just toeing the line of being copycats. ;) And that announcement about what constitutes an emergency on the train is one of the most bizarre things I've heard. :rotfl:

Great update!

He crashed as soon as the truck was put into drive. :rotfl: It did teach us that he really just won't nap in the stroller anymore, so if we still want him to take a nap in Disney World we will have to leave. Last year he would still nap in the park, although not for as long, but it was still a nap. But we also learned he can go a little longer without a nap in the park if we decided just to do a shorter day instead of leaving in the middle! So it was some valuable research for October. :thumbsup2

Our latest strategy for switching off on roller coasters is for the one of us not riding to take Paxton on something nearby that he can ride. This totally didn't work at Dollywood because their kid rides are WAY far away from any of the roller coasters. So I was very happy that they had such nice playgrounds throughout the park for him to play on. That was just as good as going on a ride in his eyes! But despite that, it was still a very good thing for us that the park was so slow and we could get on and off the coasters so quickly.

The train announcement totally freaked me out...so un-Disney like!!!

Yeah, it was fun to do once, but we don't feel the need to go back for a LONG time, if ever. But we were both definitely happy that it went better than the afternoon before!!!

:rotfl: I know! I missed the elephants the day before, so when I saw them on the map and then in person...I got a good laugh out of the, "Hey, see, we're kind of like Disney!" attempt. Not even close, Dollywood, not even close!

Yeah, that announcement... :scared1:

Busy day at Dollywood! I am friends with a family who loves Dollywood to death (like us and Disney) and they claim it's so great because there's barely ever any crowds and little waits for the rides. I know you mentioned a couple times that you waited one or two ride cycles, but would you say the wait times were really that low?

A ten pound apple pie.....:faint: It's a good thing I'm not pregnant anymore, otherwise I might'v emade DH drive up there and get me one of those slices. :rotfl2: That really is insane, though. The plate those pieces were on looked so weighted down. :rotfl:

The wait times were extremely low that day, but we went at a slow time of year for them. They weren't even open one day that week! I can't speak for the wait times in the summer though. However, for me it was a "one and done" situation. Even with low crowds, I don't think we need to pay the price of admission again anytime soon. Unless it was in my backyard, I wouldn't feel the need to go very often.

I had in my mind what a slice of 10 lb apple pie would look like, and it looked a lot smaller than what was on that plate! When I saw the real thing, I knew there was no point in getting it with no one to share it with me.

If you have read my two most recent WDW TR's, you know one thing we LOVE to do with DS is character greetings! He absolutely loved meeting characters on his first trip, and loved them even more on his second. He would run up for hugs, even from the characters that he didn't know who they were (Rafiki, Baloo, Pinocchio to name a few). Nowadays, my kiddo is a walking Disney character encyclopedia, it seems. :thumbsup2 He definitely recognizes a lot more of them, and what movie they are from, etc. We did an autograph book last year, and he didn't seem to understand the concept of the autographs, but I'm hoping it will make more sense this year. So I thought I'd share his 2013 book with you to keep this PTR moving along!

Last year, I made his book through Arts Cow and they gave me a LOT of trouble for the characters on the front cover, wanting to make sure we had permission to use them, etc. So this year, I looked for one that he would like just as much but didn't have characters on it. I checked RustManFan's thread and pored through her Photobucket until I found the perfect image for his cover! This year, I used Shutterfly and maybe they wouldn't have given me any grief over using a character on the front cover, but I didn't want to deal with the hassle if they did.

DS still loves trains, so this cover was a big hit! He likes to take the book out every now and then and flip through the pages, which works well for me because I am priming him for all of the characters we are planning to meet. It's quite a few more than I had planned on last year, but I think we can get every box filled!

Back cover

I found all of the images on the DIS in the thread A Simple Guide to Making an Autograph Book on the Creative DISigns board. Last year, I used more of the pages that were an entire 8x8 page for each character. But I wanted to fit a lot more characters into this book, and there are not too many 8x8 designs to choose from. So since I didn't want to repeat any pages, I went with the ones designed to prints as 4x6 and just combined 2 to a page.

That left me with two big hunks of white on the sides of each picture that I was unsure how to fill. Shutterfly's printed and solid color backgrounds just weren't cutting it. Luckily, my DH does come up with wonderful ideas sometimes and suggested finding themed backgrounds to go with each page. I turned to trusty old Google for that, and he helped me come up with what to search for. I found a cute dog paw print & bones background for Goofy & Pluto, Andy's wallpaper for the Toy Story characters, an anchor background for Donald & Daisy, a Hawaiian background for Lilo & Stitch, etc. It was fun and a bit challenging to find good ones, and some turned out better than others. I love most of them, but Phineas & Ferb was a challenge. I tried to find a good picture of blueprints to use as a background, but it didn't turn out so well. Overall, though, I think the book came out great!

For those of you who collect character autographs, what kinds of books do you use? I'm always looking for new ideas!

Now that's an awesome good looking autograph book!! :thumbsup2 And the backgrounds are perfect!

36 characters I counted. With that many, I would need an index page to help me find the signature spots/pages for each character. :rotfl2: I'm sure Paxton will love it! And this time around I'm pretty sure he'll learn to let go of the book without being too upset. :goodvibes

Awww - what a wonderful book - such a treasure for him! I wish we had Shutterfly here in Canada, we just had to make our own with a photo album and printed card stock pages. Yours is beautiful!

Lovely book!

Question for you: Don't the pages smear since they are glossy? I thought about making a photo book but didn't want to have to hold the book open until the sharpie was no longer "wet", holding me up from quickly moving onto the next ride.

But after seeing your book (it looks so good!), it makes me wish I went that route.

That autograph book is amazing! And wow, I cannot wait to see how you get all those character meet and greets in. I know if anyone can do it, it's you!

Obviously my DS is too little to care about autographs, but we wanted to do something special for the characters we met on his first trip so we did something else :)

At this point, we have looked through the book so many times that I pretty much know where they are in the book to get to quickly enough. :rotfl: I sure as heck hope he understands the autograph part of it more this time and doesn't freak out when the character takes the book!!!

LOVE the autograph book! How fun it will be for Paxton to collect all those autographs! :)

Thank you! Meeting characters is one of our favorite things to do in the parks with DS. :goodvibes

Thanks! What about Arts Cow? They are always offering tons of free photo products, and I think you get something like 500 free prints when you first join. They often have free photo books. You still have to pay shipping, but it ends up being like $7 for a 20 page book, so it's still worth it in my opinion. :thumbsup2

The Sharpie actually dries very quickly, and we only had one minor smear on Woody's autograph in his book last year. The rest were just fine! By the time the character signed it, handed it back, and the Sharpie was capped, the page was dry. :thumbsup2

We are up for the challenge!! :thumbsup2 Only a handful of the ones in the book this year are brand new characters that we didn't meet last year. Most of the ones that got their own spot this year were ones we met last year and didn't have a specific page for, so they signed the generic page in the back. On his birthday last year, we met 12 characters in 1 day, so I think we will be able to do it!!

I can't wait to see what you did! We mostly skipped autographs his first trip when he was really too little to understand. We just had the Vinylmation that we had the characters from our 2 breakfasts sign.

I hope that he is more willing to share his book for long enough to get the autograph this time! :thumbsup2 :rotfl2:

Hey, Where's Perry?

Yeah, I know. Not that funny and you can't get his autograph anyway. I just couldn't resist. :lmao::rotfl2:

Yeah, I think it looks great. The backgrounds for all the pages look like they worked really well... even if it wasn't exactly what you were going for.

I sincerely hope so!!! I have an old photobook I let him play with that I made for our weekend trip when I was pregnant because I made it in 6x6 not realizing how small that was and then had it reprinted in 8x8. So I might have to bring the 6x6 along with us so he can have A book and maybe won't freak out about THE book!

:lmao: We should ask Disney this question...We want to meet Perry!!! He'd probably get a whole page to himself if he was out for meet & greets. ;)

The airfare for our trip finally went down! :woohoo: So at last, all of DH's price stalking has paid off, and we snagged flights for $99/person each way. When it has been $130/person each way since the the flights were released, I have to say, I don't think it's going to get much cheaper than $99!

So it's official. On Tuesday October 22nd we will depart New Orleans at 11:45 am and arrive in Orlando at 2:20 pm.

On Wednesday October 30th, we will depart Orlando at 5:05 pm and arrive in New Orleans at 5:50 pm.

Our flight to WDW is right around DS's nap time, so we should be able to get a fairly early start in the morning to get to the airport, and hopefully he will sleep most of the way. But we will be armed with the iPad if he doesn't. :goodvibes By the time we pick up the rental car and drive to Universal, hopefully our room at Royal Pacific will be ready so we can freshen up before hitting City Walk for shopping and dinner that night.

Our flight home was the latest time we could get that was direct. I think it will be late enough that we should have plenty of time around DTD or wherever we choose to spend our last day before we have to head to the airport.

:yay: One more thing off of the to-do list!

Whoo-hoo!! :woohoo::woohoo::woohoo:

Congrats on securing your air tickets! I'm guessing you bought them through Southwest Airline's sale - you rarely can beat their prices during a sale so I think you pulled the trigger at the right time.

Yay for booking flights and cheap ones at that!

I just did the math, if you count the unused ticket I bought, we paid 171.25 each way. Not a good deal. We did get a free flight to Michigan out of the deal though ;)

We're driving next trip to try it out. It's almost 1000 miles, over 14 hours without stops with a 2.5 year old. We're probably crazy but we really want to try it. Even if we took my totally fuel in efficient v8 hemi it wouldn't cost more than $600 in gas and that's definitely an overestimate to be generous.

In short, congrats on the flights :p

Yes, it was the Southwest sale, which usually does not apply to us and where we are flying. So happy that it did this time! :yay:

Good luck with the drive. That sounds about like the drive we made to Tennessee in April with Paxton at that age, and it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. There were a couple of rough patches, but we made it! :rotfl: For us, it would be a lot cheaper to drive too, but I just really dread those long car trips now that I know I can be in Orlando after a 1.5 hour flight instead. Probably until our eventual second child is over 2 years old and would need a seat purchased, we will continue to fly. After that, buying 4 tickets will likely be out of the question, and the long drive it will be for us!

No real Disney trip news at the moment, so I thought I'd just throw in a quick life update. I'll probably be starting up a breakdown of our daily plans soon, though!

We celebrated Father's Day on Saturday since I was working Sunday. We started off the morning with DH's requested breakfast of biscuits with some apple butter we bought in Tennessee and I threw in some scrambled eggs to go with them. When breakfast was ready, DS and I went to "wake up" DH (because DS was being ever so quiet about our surprise :rotfl:) and bring him his gift, a mouse pad I made for him on Shutterfly to use in his office with pictures of him & DS.

When we finished eating, DS said he wanted to swim. So at 8 in the morning, we were filling his little pool in the backyard to go swimming! DH needed outdoor photos for his photography class assignment last week, including some of kids/family, so he used that time to snap some really cute shots of DS playing with the hose.

We played in the pool for about an hour or so, and DS had so much fun splashing around and having a great time!

Sunday I worked, and then Monday was my birthday! We had thought about letting DS go to daycare in the morning so we could go to an early lunch and catch a movie. But there was nothing playing I really wanted to see, and I just wanted DS to be with me on my birthday. DH had taken the day off too, which was so nice! First thing we did after breakfast...go swimming! This time at the neighborhood pool. We got there around 9 am, so no one else was there. The three of us spent a good hour and a half in the kiddie pool playing with DS and only one other family showed up in that time, so it was nice having it mostly to ourselves.

After swimming, we went out to lunch at my pick, Longhorn Steakhouse. We had eaten there for Valentine's Day for the first time, and I really liked it, so I wanted to go back! My steak was perfect, but unfortunately, DH's was a little too rare for his taste. And DS was mostly well behaved, so that was nice. I tried to get DH to take a picture of the two of us across the table. It took many shots to get a decent one, since most of them looked like this.

IMG_3590.jpg

But eventually I got him to smile AND not be showing off the food in his mouth!!

IMG_3597.jpg

We went back after lunch to let DS nap. When he woke up we took him to get a haircut and since he was so well behaved, we stopped at the subdivision playground on the way home to let him run around a bit before dinner.

IMG_6423.jpg

I love this one! Trying unsuccessfully to get DS to smile, so DH decided to frown instead so they would match

IMG_6424.jpg

A little better!

Overall, it was a really fun & busy (for us) few days! But we did decide that we will take a day every couple weeks this summer to keep DS home, DH take the day off of work since he has so much vacation time built up, and do something fun. Even if that is just swimming at the neighborhood pool all day. He really seems to enjoy the water now after our Tennessee trip! Which, oh yeah, I need to post the last day of that sometime soon! :upsidedow
