Trick-Or-Treat & Birthday Sweets! Oct 2013 PTR *NEW* 11/4 TR Link Posted!

Actually, your post inspired me to go back and re-read your MNSSHP updates from your previous trip, and it's kind of exactly what I worry will happen for us. But I am just going to plan as best I can and hope that it all works out for the best. The more I think about it, the more I am leaning away from trying to fit in a meet with the Dwarfs. Honestly, Paxton doesn't even know that movie at all, and it's not a favorite of mine. I know it's a big deal for the parties because it's the only time you see them all together. But I think if I'm going to wait a long time for characters, I'd rather invest the time in the princesses with their princes. .

You inpsired ME to go back and read my own TR. I just found it so disappointing to pay all that extra money for 5 hours in the park and to spend so much of it waiting in line. I can't believe that they fill these hard ticket events to the point that the park is soooo crowded.

I also think we should've more focused on the dance parties to "see" characters, instead of worrying about the meet n greets. I really wish we'd gotten over to Woody's hoedown. I think you are really thinking the right way. Don't spend too much time meeting characters. Pick one or two that are a priority, and then one of them get in line early so as not to eat up much actual party time. If you don't care about the villians, don't bother waiting for them either.

Our Christmas party strategy is basically going to be "to hell with the characters". I still want to see the shows and the parade and fireworks, but I want to get on at least 6-8 rides, dang it! I also am not going to wait around for those things. Fireworks at 9:30? We show up at 9:20 and find a spot. Same thing with the parade - maybe get there 15-20 minutes early. I also am thinking we will be doing the 2nd Christmas party of the year on a MONDAY in early November it won't be that crowded.

I forget, are you guys doing the Sunday night party? That was the one mistake we made, doing a Thursday night party - I thought that would be better than Friday, but was later told the Sunday ones are better than Thursday or Friday, which tend to be the most crowded. So, hopefully you will get a lower crowd night.

Adding to what skier_pete said, I've read from multiple places that Sundays tend to be less crowded for most weeks because the local residents tend to be less interested for that time of the week. But it also looks like all that matters less for the 3-4 parties scheduled right before Halloween as traditionally parties between 10/26-10/31 are sold out. So I'm expecting to see high crowds for the 27th. I think you should still be able to do all of the things you listed because you're already taking a practical approach and not trying to meet every single character. Taking the Dwarfs out of the line up significantly helps for sure.

I'm following along! I really enjoyed your last TR (and I'm also enjoying your current mini-TR :thumbsup2)! I too am going in October and am very excited for MNSSHP! I look forward to more of your updates :)

Well, you know... it isn't like your last TR title came from this meet & greet or anything... :rolleyes1 :lmao:

:lmao: I totally didn't even think of that!! I guess I am that transparent.

You inpsired ME to go back and read my own TR. I just found it so disappointing to pay all that extra money for 5 hours in the park and to spend so much of it waiting in line. I can't believe that they fill these hard ticket events to the point that the park is soooo crowded.

As much as I would love to meet all the special characters out for the party, I am trying to be realistic about how long it will take to do certain meet & greets and keep in mind that there is no way to do them all. DH did mention he might want to try for a picture with Captain Hook after the villains show since we will be dressed up in a Peter Pan theme, which would be cute. But I'm not killing myself to line up for multiple shows to meet all the villains, that's for sure!

Our Christmas party strategy is basically going to be "to hell with the characters". I still want to see the shows and the parade and fireworks, but I want to get on at least 6-8 rides, dang it! I also am thinking we will be doing the 2nd Christmas party of the year on a MONDAY in early November it won't be that crowded.

Yeah, at the Christmas party I felt like we spent a LOT of party time just waiting around for stuff to happen. I'm hoping we can go to less popular spots and not have to be there quite as early to see everything.

It sounds like Orlando schools have the end of the week off for the parties on Thursday the 24th and Friday the 25th, so that Thursday night party might be more crowded than usual. We are going on Sunday, but I'm thinking that really won't matter since it's so close to Halloween. According to the list Touring Plans put out earlier this week, we will be at one of the best parties for attraction wait times, but lines for the characters and Main Street will still be very crowded. :scared:

Adding to what skier_pete said, I've read from multiple places that Sundays tend to be less crowded for most weeks because the local residents tend to be less interested for that time of the week. I sure hope my approach will work!!! But from what I have also read, sounds like you're right. Sunday night or not, it will be crowded because it's so close to Halloween. Oh well, I think we will still have fun. At our MVMCP a few years ago, we had a FANTASTIC time, and it was only after getting home and reading on the boards that I found out the night had been sold out and people were complaining about how crowded everything was. We didn't have any trouble getting a spot for Wishes and then the 2nd parade on Main Street. I guess that is what I am most worried about with the Halloween party, is that we are kind of bound to doing the first parade. I remember at the Christmas party, people were just pouring out of the park after the first parade, and then there was another mass exodus after the fireworks. I am just keeping my fingers crossed we don't find ourselves part of the exodus this time because we are now in the Stroller Brigade!!!

:welcome: I'm so glad to have you! I can't wait for the Halloween party! What are your dates for your trip?

I agree that it will be a lot of fun even if the party is sold out! :thumbsup2 I think you should be okay with the first parade if you are planning on watching it from Frontierland. Should be less crowded than Main Street and you have a whole hour afterwards before Hallowishes start and stake out a spot for it. I believe Boo to You begins in Frontierland and ends in Main Street.

Every time I think about the idea of attending MNSSHP, I get butterflies in my stomach! :cool1:

I know you guys will have a blast at the party. Do I remember reading that you already got your costumes?

I absolutely love the Boo to You parade. It's the best parade EVER! I also love going through the candy stations late and night where you can just take handfuls of candy. :rolleyes1 Oh, and for the record, I gave most of it to Nick when I got home.

I also love Mickey & Minnie's Halloween costumes. They are so darn cute!

I think you are right about the parade route, so that should even give us a little extra time if we see the parade at the beginning because it will still have to finish up on Main Street.

I am the same way!! I can't help it, I just get so excited!

I got my Tink costume, and have Paxton's Peter Pan one picked out, I just haven't purchased it yet. DH's is a whole 'nother story, but we're working on it and one way or the other, he will be a character from Peter Pan. :rotfl:

The bad thing about the candy is that DH and I usually end up eating most of it! :lmao: I make all kinds of excuses for why Paxton shouldn't have the sticky candy or the candy that will make too much mess because the chocolate will melt, etc. :rolleyes1

I can't wait to see Mickey & Minnie in their costumes! I read they have two costumes on party nights, and I kind of want to see them dressed as a pirate & princess! But I will be happy with either one, of course. :goodvibes

I'm so sorry I've gotten so behind! I'm never going to remember everything to comment on, but I'm all caught up and everything sounds awesome so far! :cool1: I think we're going to actually go to Universal on this trip in December so that's going to a whole new experience for us, I've been to Universal once in my life when I was like, 12, so I barely remember it, and Brandon has never been at all! The hotels there look amazing!

Yay, MNSSHP! Your must do's sound great! I love the parade, it was my favorite part of the party! We found an awesome spot on Main Street like 45 minutes before the first parade, but that was pure luck, usually we watch parades from Fronteirland and it's pretty easy to get a good spot there! :thumbsup2 You're going to love the fireworks too, they are so amazing!!!

I'll be going October 5th-12th :)

Yay! :cool1:

Aww, that's definitely okay, Jen!

I really think you will enjoy Universal. It's no Disney World, of course, but they are doing so many big expansions right now that they are becoming quite the competition for the mouse. :thumbsup2 I'm SO excited to see the HP expansion, and the new Transformers ride should be running by the time we go too! We have stayed at two of the hotels, Royal Pacific twice and once at Hard Rock, and they are really gorgeous hotels.

I can't wait for the parade, even more because EVERYONE says how amazing it is!! Hopefully the Frontierland trick works that night too. I know Main Street will be a madhouse. Ahhhh, I get so excited just thinking about all of it!!! :hyper:

First I love of your shirts. Great idea to get a more unique shirt. We always end up making quite a few of our shirts just so we get to be more unique and fun.

Your Halloween Party plans sound great. It sounds like so much to fit into on evening. I have heard so many great things about Hallowishes, I would love to see it some day.

On our last trip Chip and Dale were dancing over by People Mover one night at a little dance party and one of our trip regrets was not staying longer Zavier absolutely loved it.

Thanks, they just came in the mail and they are so cute! I can't wait to show them off in Disney World. :thumbsup2

Sometimes it seems too overwhelming to fit everything in to the party night, but we will just have to accomplish whatever we can and that's all we can do! I'm excited for Hallowishes...I have seen videos on Youtube but I'm sure that is no comparison to the real deal.

We saw that dance party too, and DS was not too excited about it. So hopefully he will enjoy the dance party at MNSSHP. I guess if he doesn't, though, that's time we can spend doing something else. :goodvibes

Thursday April 25th

On our second to last morning, we were up at 7:45 am thanks to our little alarm clock, DS. We got up, had some breakfast (I had my pecan pie from Old Mill for mine, and it was delicious!), then got dressed and packed up our park bags. We were headed back to Dollywood for the day, and hoping it would be a better experience than the afternoon before had been. We left the resort a little after 9 am and were parking in the lot by 9:40-ish. We took the tram to the front, and saw there was some kind of marching band out front of the gates performing as we walked up.

6K6fAtd.jpg

We stopped to watch for a second, then went to wait in line at the turnstiles, but they were actually already letting people in although it was not quite 10 am yet.

316.jpg

The night before, we had decided we would start in Timber Canyon because there were 2 rollercoasters and a playground area for DS to play on while we switched off. Our goal was to try to ride as many of the big attractions early on in the day as we could so that we could get them out of the way before the waits were too long.

7jeIYSu.jpg

GzMUENa.jpg

When we got to the actual area of Timber Canyon with the rides, there was a small rope where we had to wait until 10 am before we could go through. When it opened, DH rode Thunderhead, their big wooden coaster, first while DS and I made a potty stop. When we met up, DH took DS to the playground while I went to ride.

321.jpg

325.jpg

DH took this one of me while I was on the ride!

Thunderhead was really fun! It wasn't as rattly as other wooden coasters, and it felt like a longer ride compared to some of the others we ended up riding that day. Each seat had it's own restraint, so you didn't have that fun element of sliding across the seats like on BTMRR, but it was still a lot of fun.

I met them down on the playground while DH went to ride Mystery Mine, and indoor roller coaster. DS was having a blast playing! He definitely didn't feel like he was missing out. That early in the morning, he had the whole thing to himself.

327.jpg

Hidden Mickey!

328.jpg

329.jpg

330.jpg

It was my turn to ride Mystery Mine soon after, and oh my goodness, I screamed my HEAD off during this one! It was a mostly indoor coaster, but there is one point where you go straight up, and then you go almost straight down it feels like to the outside part of the track and I think you are even inverted. It was scary but thrilling!!!

331.jpg

333.jpg

0LGGWHC.jpg

Straight incline!

That one definitely rattled me a bit. When I came off the ride, DH and DS were waiting for me, so we started walking. We passed a water ride that looked like fun, but it was REALLY cold that day, so we passed on water rides.

340.jpg

341.jpg

DS being cute

We walked over to Wilderness Pass to ride the newest coaster, Wild Eagle. We decided to utilize the rider swap option here, so while DH rode, I waited with DS in a designated area. As DH came off, he was able to come right to the child swap spot and let me go get in line. I only waited through one ride cycle before I got on. The big deal with this coaster is that you are suspended away from the track, like the track is the eagle's body and the ride seats are hanging from under the wings. It was a great coaster, but a really short ride!

342.jpg

q0oyCQH.jpg

After Wild Eagle, we stopped to watch the Wings of America bird show that was already in progress, mostly because I needed a break from all the coaster action! The show featured different birds of prey, including the stunning bald eagle!

WIR7MQR.jpg

pEv28GB.jpg

After the show, we walked through Craftsmans Valley to check out some of the artisans at work, but there wasn't too much going on.

BL5hzbS.jpg

Then we found the Little Pilots playground in the Owens Farm section and let DS run around there a bit.

mHHj4VN.jpg

uLdaD5v.jpg

When he was finished playing, we were starting to get hungry. We headed over to Jukebox Junction to get some lunch at Red's Drive-In, a quick service place.

361.jpg

362.jpg

However, a quick look at the menu had us leave without purchasing anything. This kids meal options were terrible! They were both $7 and the options were a burger we didn't think he would eat or a peanut butter & jelly sandwich. No thanks! So I made a suggestion that I wasn't sure DH would react well too, but he actually agreed. We ended up having lunch at Aunt Granny's, the buffet we had tried to eat at the night before and found closed before park closing! lol

363.jpg

In the end, he was glad he had gotten over his anger from the day before. We were seated right away, and the buffet was really good. Plus, there was a dessert buffet, and you just can't be mad once you see that! They had fried chicken, shepherd's pie, mac & cheese, mashed potatoes, roast beef, fish, biscuits, pasta with marinara, plus burgers and hot dogs. It was a good selection, and I think I tried some of everything except the burgers and dogs. DS ate two hot dogs plus some of our sides. Definitely ate better than he would have with that $7 burger! Then came the desserts, which were delicious! First (yes, first!) I had a slice of strawberry shortcake that was heavenly! When I went back for a second piece, they didn't have any more out so I tried a slice of chocolate cake. DH had chocolate cake with soft serve ice cream, and DS had a little bit of chocolate pudding. We left stuffed!!

Continued in next post...

After lunch, we headed back to Jukebox Junction to look around a little more, mostly because DS had seen a tow truck that, although blue, he proclaimed was Mater!

364.jpg

While I made a pit stop, DH took him over to what we were planning to do next, the Rockin' Roadway. There was a stationary car in front that DS of course had to pretend to drive, and he proclaimed he was driving Finn McMissile.

367.jpg

When we got in line, we found out it is a strict 2 to a car, so only one of us could ride with DS. DH decided to go in the car ahead of us so he could take pictures of myself and DS behind him. I let DS drive, and he loved it!

373.jpg

CCFeBO3.jpg

When we came off Rockin' Roadway, it was almost 1 pm so we decided to try and catch the next train. We sat at the station for a few minutes after boarding waiting for the train to depart. They made an announcement that there is a cord you can pull for medical emergencies to stop the train, but not to pull it if ashes or cinders get in your eye because although painful, it's not an emergency. Uhhhh, okay, that made me a little nervous!

378.jpg

379.jpg

DXxhNWD.jpg

The train was a nice 20 minute ride that DS enjoyed, although he didn't love how loud the whistle was. And I'm happy to say none of us got anything in our eyes, although DS and I did get particularly dirty on our faces from the ashes or smoke or something.

When we came off the train, DS saw the carousel across the way and asked for another ride, so we went on that. He didn't want to ride a horse, though, he wanted to ride the rooster (or chicken, as he said).

383.jpg

Since we were right there by the Country Fair and DS really hadn't gotten to ride much that day, we decided to give the kiddie rides another go. First up, DH took him on the mini-coaster for a couple of times, then I brought him on the "Magical Flying Elephants" (aka Fake Dumbos).

fshCzn6.jpg

We didn't go on this but I like the picture

bq6BzoM.jpg

388.jpg

We tried to go on the Lemon Drop, a teacup style ride, but it wasn't functioning. So we went back over to the little duck and pig rides DS had ridden the night before, and he wanted to ride them again. He picked a blue duck "like Donald," then had the pig ride to himself. Every time he would pass us, he'd say, "A flyin' piggy!" It was so cute!

391.jpg

397.jpg

After those two, he rode the last kiddy ride, the Busy Bees, which was a smaller version of Dumbo and went up and down by itself. I was a little nervous about how he'd do on that one since the elephants going up had made him a little nervous and he had to ride this one alone. But he insisted so I let him go on it, and he loved it!

399.jpg

400.jpg

After that, DS was way past the point where he usually takes a nap, so we hoped walking him around in the stroller that he would fall asleep in it while we switched off for the last two roller coasters. No luck, he never did fall asleep in the stroller! But we switched off riding Blazing Fury anyway. I was excited about this one as it was promoted as an indoor roller coaster. I was expecting something like The Mummy. Boy was I wrong! I should have known when DH came out and I asked him how it was and his response was, "I'll let you see for yourself." It was the LAMEST THING EVER. I don't know how they can even call that a roller coaster! Most of it, you are just riding through slowly, and every time you think you are picking up speed and something exciting is going to happen, you slow down again. The most thrilling part at the end was a big dip in the track, but that was it. What a waste!

TW7vGs4.jpg

DH went on the last coaster in the park, the Tennessee Tornado, a steel coaster with lots of inversions. When he came off he said it had rattled him around too much and given him a headache, so I decided to skip it.

405.jpg

406.jpg

DH wanted to go back to Timber Canyon to ride Mystery Mine and Thunderhead again. We stopped on the way at the gift shop by Wild Eagle to buy a shirt I had seen and wanted that said "Be an Eagle, Not a Chicken" on the back with the Wild Eagle emblem on the front and DH got a t-shirt that had all 5 coasters on it showing he had ridden them all.

While he took another spin on the coasters, I took DS back to the playground where he played with another little girl who was already over there with her dad. She was just a little older than him and VERY friendly. He was staying away from her at first and acting shy, but eventually he warmed up and they had a great time playing together. So cute to watch him interact with another kid his age! He doesn't get to do that much, except at daycare and then I'm not around to see it.

Once DH met up with us, we were about ready to leave. But I really wanted to check out the Bakery and see about getting a slice of the 10 lb apple pie!

410.jpg

412.jpg

The slice of apple pie is on the top shelf of the case, and it's HUGE! I ended up not getting it because I knew DH wouldn't share it with me and I didn't want to eat the whole thing myself even if it took a couple days.

We also stopped in the candy shop, which had all kinds of delicious treats!

414.jpg

415.jpg

416.jpg

A whole wall of fruit butters!

To exit the park, you have to walk through their huge giftshop, the Emporium.

409.jpg

We took one last opportunity to souvenir shop and ended up getting a Dollywood Express magnet, a t-shirt for DS with the Dollywood Express on it, and a postcard for his collection. None of the adult shirts were much to look at, so we didn't get anything else for ourselves.

Since DS had not napped in the stroller, you can bet as soon as we got in the car, he passed out in his car seat for the ride home!

418.jpg

We were still so full from the buffet lunch and a whole week of eating out that we headed back to the resort for some pb&j sandwiches with chips in the room while we watched Wreck-It Ralph. After a long day, DS went to bed a little early and DH and I relaxed in our room and watched Grey's Anatomy before going to bed ourselves.

UP NEXT: Last day!

Sounds like a FUN day. Glad it worked out much better than your first day. I can't say there was a lot that you showed me that makes me want to head to Dollywood, though!

While it was a fun day, we both agreed it's not something we'd need to do again, at least not until DS and all future kids are big enough for the thrill rides. There just wasn't much for Paxton to, although it was nice to find the play areas so that he didn't get restless waiting for us to ride. It definitely made us appreciate the Disney difference all the more! It was sad that there was really nothing we could all three ride together besides the train!

It was my turn to ride Mystery Mine soon after, and oh my goodness, I screamed my HEAD off during this one! Ok, that one looks awesome! We always go to Gatlinburg with DW's family and they just aren't the amusement park types. I really need to convince them to go sometime just so I can ride the coasters!!!

The big deal with this coaster is that you are suspended away from the track, like the track is the eagle's body and the ride seats are hanging from under the wings. It was a great coaster, but a really short ride!
Ooooh! This one looks fun too!

So I made a suggestion that I wasn't sure DH would react well too, but he actually agreed. We ended up having lunch at Aunt Granny's, the buffet we had tried to eat at the night before and found closed before park closing! lol
You took a huge risk. I'm glad it worked out for you. :rotfl2:

We left stuffed!!
Well, if you aren't stuffed when you leave a buffet, you did it wrong. :lmao::rotfl:

After lunch, we headed back to Jukebox Junction to look around a little more, mostly because DS had seen a tow truck that, although blue, he proclaimed was Mater!
Well, you can't argue with that logic. Maybe underneath all that rust... :confused3 :rotfl2:

When we came off Rockin' Roadway, it was almost 1 pm so we decided to try and catch the next train.
I really thought there was going to be another story about standing and waiting, and waiting, and waiting... :lmao:

They made an announcement that there is a cord you can pull for medical emergencies to stop the train, but not to pull it if ashes or cinders get in your eye because although painful, it's not an emergency. Uhhhh, okay, that made me a little nervous!
So... are you supposed to ask them what exactly consitutes an "emergency" before using said emergency stop device?

I brought him on the "Magical Flying Elephants" (aka Fake Dumbos).
Wow... those things are just... wow. I think that's about as close as they could get without violating some kind of copyright/trademark law or something. :lmao:

But we switched off riding Blazing Fury anyway. I was excited about this one as it was promoted as an indoor roller coaster. I was expecting something like The Mummy. Boy was I wrong! :rotfl::lmao::rotfl2: I actually remember this one from the one time I went to Dollywood back in the early 90's. Apparently my memory appears to be pretty much spot on. :rotfl2:

So cute to watch him interact with another kid his age! He doesn't get to do that much, except at daycare and then I'm not around to see it.
I'm glad he managed to make a friend! :thumbsup2

But I really wanted to check out the Bakery and see about getting a slice of the 10 lb apple pie!
Just a slice? :rolleyes1

The slice of apple pie is on the top shelf of the case, and it's HUGE! I ended up not getting it because I knew DH wouldn't share it with me and I didn't want to eat the whole thing myself even if it took a couple days.
A couple of days? I'm thinking a couple of minutes. I don't care how big it is, good apple pie doesn't last long around me. :lmao:

Sounds like you guys got a lot done! Those apple pie slices are HUGE!! ::yes::

Although going during slow season had definitely NOT helped us the afternoon before when the park closed 2 hours early unannounced, it did have its advantages on our full day there. We walked on to every attraction with no problems.

The apple pie slices were way bigger than I ever could have imagined! A friend told me to make sure I got a slice, but there was just no way I could eat that thing alone!!!

Ok, that one looks awesome! We always go to Gatlinburg with DW's family and they just aren't the amusement park types. I really need to convince them to go sometime just so I can ride the coasters!!!

It's a great park for thrill seekers, but not much for the little ones to do, unfortunately. Mystery Mine was one of the best ones, though it scared the bejeesus out of me!!

Ooooh! This one looks fun too!

Being out away from the track like that was such a different experience. It was really amazing, even better than ones where you are just suspended under the track like Dueling Dragons.

You took a huge risk. I'm glad it worked out for you. :rotfl2:

I think DH's head would have exploded if they were closed that time!

Well, if you aren't stuffed when you leave a buffet, you did it wrong. :lmao::rotfl:

:thumbsup2

Well, you can't argue with that logic. Maybe underneath all that rust... :confused3 :rotfl2:

I guess he could be Mater when he was in disguise at the blue tow truck in Cars 2???? I just realized my kid is probably more observant than I realize. :lmao:

I really thought there was going to be another story about standing and waiting, and waiting, and waiting... :lmao:

Oh my God, thank goodness it WASN'T! This was by far Paxton's favorite attraction of the day! :goodvibes

So... are you supposed to ask them what exactly consitutes an "emergency" before using said emergency stop device?

Exactly!!! They never said what actually does constitute an emergency in that spiel. I guess you must need to be on the brink of death and hopefully you are not solo so someone in your party can pull the cord for you!

Wow... those things are just... wow. I think that's about as close as they could get without violating some kind of copyright/trademark law or something. :lmao:

They were the weirdest looking elephants!!!

:rotfl::lmao::rotfl2: I actually remember this one from the one time I went to Dollywood back in the early 90's. Apparently my memory appears to be pretty much spot on. :rotfl2:

Worst thing I rode all day, and I'm including the "Magical Flying Not Dumbos" in that list!

A couple of days? I'm thinking a couple of minutes. I don't care how big it is, good apple pie doesn't last long around me. :lmao:

Maybe subconsciously I knew I could actually eat the whole thing no problem and then I would have felt ashamed! :lmao:
