Travel shaming. Are you limiting your social media posts?

We've done a couple of in-state road trips. We felt very safe doing it. I admit though--I felt a bit of guilt and posted very little.
Hard to justify pictures at a fabulous place while so many are suffering amid this pandemic.

Disney trips seem particularly flagrant. We still hope to be there in October and I have a feeling it will be a quiet trip with only close friends in the know.

How about you?

I predicted there would be a huge amount of travel shaming months ago, when the lockdown happened and many people lost their jobs. But many people haven't lost their jobs and have been working straight through. Some people now have more disposable income due to working from home and less weekly spending.

Don't feel guilty and you shouldn't have to limit your social media posts due to fear of being shamed.

People are just jealous that they can't have what you have. People are just bitter that vacations have been cancelled. People try to shame you and make you feel guilty as a way of making themselves feel better. They had to miss out so they think its not fair that you can still have a vacation.

Many people have had to use their vacation money to pay bills in 2020 due to loss of income and that makes them angry.

I haven’t limited what I share. I have friends on both sides - some are also traveling, some are lecturing me on how to travel safely and disinfect my hotel.

Umm, it's not about having enough money to travel. It's about spreading a deadly virus through your travels. Yes, if you are travelling then you are selfish. Why do you think Florida's numbers are so high. It's because of people being out and about that the rest of us can't go anywhere. I'll shame you and then some.

We don't really have a vacation planned right now other than a long weekend at the Lake located about 3 1/2 hrs from us but I know there are people who have opted to not post anything at all or they have waited to post until they were back.

I typically don't post much on FB but I've seen how nasty people are to each other on all sides. That part I find unfortunate. None of us are paragons of saints either that much I can assure you.

I have a friend on FB who posted her trips to the Wisconsin Dells and Las Vegas in June. She left a state with strict virus rules to "get away" to somewhere else with no rules. I personally think that she made a mistake by travelling and took some real chances. The main waterpark she visited at the Dells just closed last week because of Covid infections and I can't imagine that Las Vegas is particularly safe either.

Did I judge her? Yes, I did. I judged her own judgement on travelling to high traffic areas during a pandemic. But, I DID NOT shame her or say a single thing to her. I also did not "like" or otherwise react to her vacation posts. I just scrolled on.

Curious as to what the "then some" is. I doubt you mean anything physical, so what? Cursing people out?

We had a trip to Vegas in April that was cancelled and we are able to reschedule for travel through March 2021 I believe. I admit I want to go but am not at the point of thinking it's a good idea at the present moment for rescheduling (I don't even know when we would schedule for). I do however know that Vegas right now is selling some of their hotel rooms as "work from" places meant to get away from home if you're working from home. It's an interesting concept. I don't know that I would fly from where I'm at to there for that purpose but I can see more regional travel occurring there.

We haven’t been traveling except to the shore but we do day outings and I post. We’ve done Wildwood for a weekend, a day at the winery, a day in Atlantic City, outdoor bars, and small BBQs at home, etc. I don’t have FB but I Post on IG. I haven’t been shamed to my face. Who knows what people say behind my back. Lol. I really don’t care what people think about me and I post what I want.

I see people on my feed going to Vegas, Arizona, Miami, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, etc. I haven’t seen any shaming.

I took a trip to Universal shortly after my brother died the last week of June. I took all precautions but I needed to get away from the memories and my all consuming grief. The change of scenery did me a world of good, and frankly, I don't give a flying fart what anyone thinks of me.

Yes. Americans are generally selfish. The pandemic should have made this crystal clear to you.

For me social media is limited to the Dis, so I never share my personal life with friends and family online anyway.

I think the reason a lot of people aren't sharing their travel via social media is to avoid responsibility and/or blame if they become ill or if they bring the virus as a souvenir to others.

Weren't you the poster back in June who was going to go on their fall cruise trip if their mom was okay with it because she was the high risk one and she was really afraid of getting it? I know you cancelled it but couldn't you be called selfish for 1) even thinking about traveling 2) considering traveling so long as someone else in your traveling party was okay with it?

Ultimately I feel like with your posts you wouldn't have gone but I know you were considering it.

right now there are international travel bans and there is a big push on staycations. As soon as the travel bans are lifted I'm off this island and heading straight for California. I had to leave a European Disney forum due to the travel shaming, from people who have had their 2020 Walt Disney World vacations cancelled.

I don't have kids and I am self employed, therefore I am not limited to school holidays and I don't have to worry about annual leave. The amount of travel shaming due to my personal circumstances being different to every else was insane.
Multiple people in multiple threads over multiple days on that European Disney forum on and on at me all because I could still make it to Disneyland in 2020 in October or November this year but they have all had their vacations cancelled.

Most of my friends and family have been posting pictures of travel. It is mostly outdoor travel. Camping hiking, weekend trips, eating out. Some have posted pics of going to downtown Disney ( that i am very jealous of). I am not doing any of that all, but i am not judging them at all. I know i am not going to see them anytime soon and i know there is no point in saying anything. We all do what we feel safe doing and I can only worry about my self and my family because that is all i have control over.

The problem for you is that your intended recipient must actually care what your opinion is.

If it is okay for me to go to work as I have been since the beginning then it’s okay for me to travel while remaining socially distanced. Your permission is not required.

Shame away!
