Transfering points

Could anyone tell me if what kind of experience they have had with transfering points? I am concerned I will transfer them and not get paid.

If I were to transfer points to another member, I would require payment in full before the transfer took place. A point transfer is a final transaction and MS will not get involved in a payment dispute as payment for transfers is not allowed per our contract.

Both people in the transaction have trust issues (if the person getting the transfer has to pay up front, how does he/she know the person doing the transfer will/can actually transfer the points?)--so requiring payment up front helps the person doing the transfer but doesn't help the person getting the transfer at all.

Probably better to take the time to establish a relationship and build some trust.

I have someone (from here on the DIS) who I go to whenever I need extra points (rent or transfer), and he knows he can come to me should he need extra points in any given year.

We exchange occasional emails; have each other's addresses and phone numbers--in short, we "know" each other.

So, when it comes time to rent/transfer, neither of us worries a bit about the transaction going smoothly.

Because these are all person-to-person transactions, it makes a lot of sense to invest the time in creating a "real (even if it's cyber) relationship"...

....making the transaction rather immediate and giving the buyer some recourse. I have made about 6 point transfers all with payment in advance and things went quite well. I would not transfer without the funds.

Like others have said its all a matter of trust. I have been renting points out for a few years since I became a DVC member, but have also rented from another member. By doing this I have built up a good relationship with all. Ive never done a points transfer but would be looking at getting all payment up front. You could also ask for references if they have done this before. Best of Luck.

I have done 50% before transfer and 50% after, that way both parties have the same risk.

I agree with the half up front and half after the transfer, in 10 years of ownership I have only done 3 transfers, one to my brother, but with the other two I did half and half. It work well as we both assumed some of the risk.

What does everyone use for payment for a transfer? Personal check? Certified check?

In each case we transferred the person needing the points was in a hurry - so paypal always worked - though there is clearly a higher transaction cost.

No way would I accept a check or even a certified check, with the possibility of fraud that couldn't be detected until weeks later. There is no charge at Paypal if its just a personal transfer of money, but then I'm sure there are no protections.

As DMKEDM said, it helps to build trust, though you have to start somewhere. People are more likely to trust long-time DIS members with a reasonably high post count (that goes for both sides), or if you can provide references. Otherwise, it seems reasonable to go the 50/50 route.

The trust piece is big. For that reason I use the same ID for Disboards as I do for Ebay. Allows the "purchaser" to see sales patterns....built in references.

Think I will stick with Paypal. But - just do nit know what the recourse is if I accept 1/2, make a transfer then the "buoyed" does not make the second payment. On the Ebay side I have had some real winners - but the transactions were always much smaller.

There would be no recourse as technically, transferring for money is against the rules.

As others have said, it is about trust and you just hope that you get the other 1/2.

I have transfered points a few times.

You are transfering to another member and they know the game. I have taken a check and used Paypal. With a check the buyer understands that the check must clear before I transfer the points. With Paypal I asked that service charges be paid by the buyer.

Make a personal contact with the buyer by phone. Get to know the buyer so you both trust each other.

So far so good.....

As everyone has said it is a matter of trust. But still if you are doing the transfer get the money up front, at least you have some kind of hard asset behind you (DVC membership). Get and give references. Also bring your disboards posts count up and get as much information as possible.

I had someone transfer points to me once. We did a 3 way call. I then sent him a personal check. It was great of him to trust me. I would have been a nervous wreck had it been the other way around. There again, it's all a matter of trust.

I just did this very thing for the first time 3 weeks ago. I transferred 224 points to another member for a trip he was planning next year.He sent me a certified check for the full amount. I also felt that it was a final transaction and was nervous to do it any other way. At least when you rent if someone doesn't pay you just can cancel the reservation. He was a very nice man and after emailing and talking a couple times he felt he could trust me. :)
