Transfering "Future" Year Points

Hi All,

Next year my wife and I will be unable to use our points and would like to transfer them to someone now. Our use year is June. My question is, can we transfer our 2009 points to someone now or do we need to wait until June?

I asked DVC Member Services this same question several months ago and was told it could not be done. Only current year points can be transferred. It is possible I got a "bum" cast member, but she explained to do a transfer now the points have to be available now. And I said, "Well, they are available now since I could borrow them." Then she said that borrowed points cannot be transferred either. So it seems there really is no way around it!

Is this right? I had always just assumed that you could transfer the next year's points, as they are available for making reservations. If that is true, that would mean that the only ways you could use transferred points for an 11 month reservation would be a) get points from a use year the month before (ie 12 months before the reservation, or b) get current year points and then bank them.

It would seem to me that neither of those scenarios is very workable. If you are dealing with banked points, you lose the flexibility of canceling and banking them. If you have to be very specific on the month you receive points from, it makes it hard to find someone to transfer.

Please tell me that the poster above was given bad info.

(I only ask because I am planning a big trip in 2010, for which I will need to get a points transfer in, and would like to book at 11 months ahead)

I think she was misinformed.

I have transfered my points to another member. I did it 6 months before my use year started. the points follow the same use year rules for the member you transfer it to.

I can only tell you what our recent experience has been and it is in line with what Blahnde posts (agree that if you've points that are available to borrow then why not let them be transferrable) and our experience also was according to what is in dvc vacation planner. Keep in mind I am not in a position to say how poster Lcardvero's experience happened as they've stated.

Only a member's current Use Year points may be transferred to another member ~ this was our experience couple months ago when we needed points transferred in . . . a member offered to borrow points from his upcoming Use Year to transfer to us and in fact we called MS to see if this would be possible; they said no - can't do it - points had to be from his current Use Year allotment
( a member's banked points can't be transferred either ).

But yes transferred points can be banked by the receiving member.

In our experience the Home Resort of the member transferring to us was not important for our reservation because our intended travel dates were less than 7 months out. But for someone else interested in using the 8 - 11 month booking advantage those transferred points need to be from a member with the particular Home Resort you want to book.

I received a transfer of points in Sept 2007 which were from an April 2008 UY. As you cannot borrow transferred points, I could not use them for any vacation prior to April 2008, but I could (and did) bank them into the 09 UY to use for a vaction between April 09 and March 10. -- Suzanne
