TransAtlantic Hitting very bad seas!

For those who have been on the Northern Europe itinerary, how are the seas in the Baltic? We are going in July.

Last year the Baltic was smooth sailing in June. I know that is not always the case, but I think you have an even better chance in July. Happy cruising!

Perhaps this is a kind of a dumb question but why then do they do cruises to places like Alaska? I know they only go in the summer when I presume the ice is less, but there is still ice. I am asking because on one hand I would LOVE to do an Alaskan cruise someday but on the other hand, Titanic would be on my mind a whole lot more than I would like. Thanks in advance for any insight!

Hi Kerry,

Go on your Alaska Cruise., you will love it.

The Titanic incident was a collection of errors and conditions, coming together, to cause a terrible disaster. The construction and operation of vessel, technologies and monitoring has improved greatly. I will never say another vessel will never be sunk by ice, but the the chances are very near impossible.

The ice vessels encounter in the Atlantic and other oceans vary greatly in size and type.........from massive bergs, IE what the Titanic side swiped, to sheet ice and small growlers/ pancakes. These can indeed sink ships if hit unexpectedly and /or running at sea speeds.

The Alaskan cruse lanes are well monitored and the Masters know what ice is in the areas they are going, especially when sightseeing around Glaciers. The calving of ice is generally not that big and most important is the cruise ships are going at slow speeds, often bearing making headway. Its perfectly safe for the vessels to push the growlers and pancakes out of their way,

AKK

I would never do a EBTA for this reason, unpredictable, and can be very rough, by luck last year was OK. I think my friends were on 2007 one when the Magic took on some water in rough seas.

I was on 2007 EBTA and yes it was bad! The pools were closed as the swell was too much for them to be safe (think Typhoon lagoon size waves in the Goofy pool! There are some great pics around of the water splashing out of the pool.

Yep I was on the 2007 WBTA the cruise director said think it was a she said she has been on xx amount of transatlantic and this was the smoothiest she has been on.

Was on the Westbound too and it was just completely flat! Amazing cruise in contrast to the Eastbound.

I love TAs but you risk bad weather which is reflected in the price. Just hope friends onboard are still enjoying it even with the waves.

NAH -- don't think Titanic. We cruised on HAL in Alaska in May 2012 -- we were the first cruise out for the season. When entering Glacier Bay we were literally cutting through the ice flows, you could hear it hitting the ship and scraping, and we thought it was awesome. We were never worried or afraid anything would happen because the ship was going so slow -- but what a sight!

Ive been wanting to take my kids to NYC so this cruise would be a good excuse or opportunity. I guess Im different then most people, but I wouldnt want to fly all the way from the west coast to Europe to see cc and ocean. I really like this itinerary. I like an even mix of ports and sea days when I cruise.

This would be such a great way to do it -- after some relaxing days at sea, to dock and spend some time in NYC. And it's a great time of year -- not too hot. If you need any restaurant recommendations, let me know ;)

I think I've talked myself into switching from the EB to WB. I think losing an hour each day would drive me batty. I'm a morning person. It's currently 630 am. Tomorrow I'll be up at 400 am for work. I love getting up early and running on deck 4. I think if I woke up and the clock said 10 am I'd have an anxiety attack...not really, but I would hate it. Looks like from the quotes the WB will be right around what I like to pay for a cruise. I'll get back to you in a year on those restaurants.

Really hard the hour loss each day! I definitely prefer the gaining an hour.

Yes, I remember that on the EBPC in 2005 -- hated getting those reminder notes in our room that we were losing another hour!

If you are looking at 2017 we may well be on the same cruise as my TA is on hold trying to sort it now! Very excited

The 2017 WBTA seems to have very few sea days compared to other WBTAs, how is that possible?

They added two ports in Spain next year. This year there are 3 sea days between the Azores and Canada. Next year there is two. I guess we'll be flying across the Atlantic...teleporting maybe...I don't know. It does seem quick.

So, the itinerary is Barcelona, Cadiz, Lisbon (Which btw is Portugal, not Spain ;)), Azores, New Foundland, New York? It just seems so many ports and so few sea days to me. Are the port times very short?

We leave the Azores at 2pm. Cadiz and Lisbon are full port days. This years TA has I believe had two stops in Canada, and no stops in Spain or Portugal.

Baltic Seas were almost TOO smooth! I have to take meds and wear the band to keep from getting seasick and even I was wishing for a little more movement!

The water looks a bit choppy and lots of white caps...but not too foreboding...I grew up on boats...that's tame from my experience...it's just one photo though so perhaps it feels worse than it looks.

I would love to do a TA....if only I had that many vacation days!! Sigh.

We had 6 straight sea days in 2007. Looks like they are breaking those up with ports. I think we have the same amount of sea days as in 2007 but it is a 3-day shorter cruise.

We are very excited, too, about stopping at Newfoundland! And about returning to a port we can drive home from and not fly!!!!
