Trading through II

We have been DVC members since 1998 and I have only used points one time for a trip outside of DW. We gave points to our son to use on his honeymoon in Maui and in San Fran. We made the ressie at the Concierage hotels available in both cities and they absolutely loved it. We own points at the BWV and the BCV and I can only get DH to go for a week once a year. I am not familiar at all with II. Do you have to use only the places that Disney lists or are you open to any II property? I have seen folks talk about going to Marriott properties on HH. How do I know what properties are even available anywhere? I hate to be so uninformed but I never thought I would be trading out. How do I even know how many points I would need to use? Thanks for putting up with this question! You are all so knowledgeable and generous with your information. I am so glad that I found you!!!!

DVC Members trading out to II properties is addressed through the DVC "World Passport Collection." You may want to refer to your Vacation Planner guide for complete information (pages 24-25 in the guide for 2004-2005).

In general, you will contact DVC's Member Services to open your request (and to be walked through the entire process!). Points per week are as follows:

If trading into a 1BR unit:
Low Season: 124 points
Mid Season: 144 points
High Season: 160 points

If trading into a 2BR unit:
Low Season: 207 points
Mid Season: 252 points
High Season: 270 points

Each exchange is charged $75 (non-refundable) when the match is confirmed.

You may also want to consider, as an alternative route, seeking direct exchanges with other timeshare owners. The Timeshare User's Group (TUG2.net) website has a section specifically designed for "direct exchanges" (owner to owner).

Thank you for your explanation. I have looked at the properties listed on pages 36 through 39, but aren't there other II properties not on this pages that we can trade to? How do I found out about those, or can we not trade to them or are they not worth trading to? Thanks.

Thanks Horace, so are these the only ones on II that we can trade to? A friend of mine who owns a timeshare in St. Thomas has traded to timeshares on the Outerbanks in NC and also one in Atlantic City. These are not on the list, so does that mean that Disney did not think much of these properties and that we can not trade to them?

Those are the only ones we can trade to. Now, I suppose it might be possible for someone at DVC Member Services to get someone at II to override the system to force an exchange that's way "beneath" DVC -- but would you really want that?

The II affiliated resorts on the World Passport Collection list are the higher quality II affiliated timeshare resorts. That doesn't mean they're all up to the quality of the DVC resorts, but they should be reasonably decent places.

There are a few cases, such as the Harbourside at Atlantis, where a high quality resort is not listed because it's essentially impossible to get. Also, the list does not include Orlando area resorts. Currently, the Marriott at Disneyland Paris is also missing; I don't know if they're just slow adding new resorts, or if DVC is favoring the Disney Collection properties at Disneyland Paris. Of course, the list does not include any timeshare resorts that are only affiliated with RCI.

Horace, you are a wealth of information, thank you! No, I would not want to stay in a place that does not meet Disney standards, I do trust them. Ok, so we can not exchange our points through RCI? What does that stand for? Thanks again.

RCI is Resort Condominiums International, one of the two big timeshare exchange compnanies. The other one is Interval International (II). RCI has more resorts than II. Although RCI has many excellent properties, RCI also has a bunch of converted motels and other lower end properties. II has many top "brand names," such as Marriott, Hyatt, Four Seasons, and, of course, Disney.

Some resorts are affiliated with both RCI and II, but most are affiliated with one exchange company or the other.

The only way to trade from DVC to an RCI resort is to arrange a direct exchange or to work with one of the smaller exchange companies. DVC Member Services won't help you with this. I've never taken this route. If you want to try it, I would recommend doing your homework, especially if you decide to do a direct exchange. A good Web resource is the Timeshare Users Group at http://www.tug2.net ($15/year for access to all content; free for boards and limited other content).

We have traded to the Marriott on HH. I forget which one but we did it to be closer to the water. Well, that didn't happen. We were about a 15 minute walk and you couldn't drive there. We won't do that again. We have stayed at Marriotts before and like them very much. We are going to Williamsburg, VA in Oct and staying at a Marriott there. We like the option to trade to other locations and bought with that in mind. Others may feel different. We like to take 2 vacations a year and once is mostly at WDW, the other a trade. We have gone to CA, Washington, NYC. All were using DVC points and well worth the money. I am presently checking on where to spend our next year vacations-possibly Las Vegas and Missouri. Probably won't use points for Las Vegas but will for Missouri.

Marriott's Manor Club at Ford's Colony in Williamsburg is an excellent timeshare resort. As long as you know ahead of time that it's about a 15 minute drive to the historic area, you should really enjoy your stay there. The setting by a country club in the midst of a posh residential area is lovely.

Actually any timeshare in the world is essentially available in one way or another. You have access to about 400 fo the 1900 II resorts through DVC-II. You also have the options of direct exchanges as well as a number of independent exchange companies. This gives you potential access to any timeshare and in some case, condo's. It also gives you access to additional potential unit availability in addition to that through II. What's best depends on what you want. Some independents tend to get specific things more than others and some only accept certain types of resorts. Some require a membership fee and others don't. Some will do search first and others will not. Anyone interested in exchanging DVC for a specific high demand options like HI, should explore all options available. And these include renting one's points then renting what you need.

I read that you wanted to trade into II for a Marriott. I have a studio and a 1 bedroom at Marriott Beach Place Towers in Ft. Lauderdale. My reservations are for December 19 to 26 in a 1 bedroom and December 26 to Jan 2 in a studio. I would consider trading points for one of these or both.
