Trading in computer

We were considering the possibility of trading in our MAC desktop for a MAC laptop. There is a website called www.Powermax.com that does trade ins but I am kind of leery as to how reputable they are and if they can be trusted to give me the credit when I send in the computer. Has anyone used this type of service?

We have never traded in a computer although we have traded up a few times while keeping the older system. We have some Mac IIs in the office as pieces of art. We tend to keep our computers so long that they are not worth more than a few dollars in trade-in value by the time we are ready to let them go. They tend to be worth more to collectors if you can find one. There is value in maintaining backup systems.

I had never heard of Powermax although I see on their web site that they have the authorized reseller logo. A Mac user group or a web site like macintouch may be able to advise you.

We traded in our Mac desktop just a few months ago for a MacBook pro. We did it through a link on Apple's website and the company is PowerOn. It went smoothly and we got our $$$ really quickly. We have also traded other items through best buy and had a good experience as well but best buy was going to give us $200 less PowerOn.

I got a quote through PowerOn and it was $300 less than PowerMax. But, I wouldn't feel comfortable going thru PowerMax until I read some reviews from people who have used them.

Whatever you do, I advise you to take your hard drive out, and drill a hole through it, then throw it out or try to find a place to recycle it. I'm serious!

If you've ever bought something online, done finances or anything personal at all on your old machine, the data can be recovered from the hard drive even if you wipe it either by yourself or with some pro software beforehand. The only way to be sure is to physically destroy the drive.

You probably won't get much for an old computer because new ones are so cheap, but I would put it up on ebay or craigslist, say the hard drive is missing, and see what you get. A new hard drive will cost the buyer maybe $30, and sure you'll get less money, but peace of mind.

We sold some Mac laptops and a Mac Mini a few months ago on eBay and got really good prices for them. They were all older and one of the laptops was damaged cosmetically. Check some completed listings to see if you would get more selling it. Just make sure to be very detailed in the listing and expect people to ask lots of questions and possible bid and not pay!

I've used powermax for years. I've traded 2 laptops and a couple of ipods with them and have never been disappointed. They pay what they say they will, as long as the trade in is in the same condition on which they based the quote. In other words, if you list it as good condition with having all the parts and then it arrives and it's a mess, then they won't pay what they said. But as long as you don't overstate the condition, you'll get what they tell you you will. I've also just shopped there several times and been happy with the service.

Well I went ahead and did the trade in through powermax and was very happy with their services. They gave me $975 for my imac and was able to buy a new macbook pro for only $200 more.
