can anyone please settle this...I have a Chevy Silverado 2500 LT 6litre, can it pull a fifth wheel with 10400 empty capacity?

Year? Chevy has a nice Trailering Guide on their website based on your year for recent makes. Gas/Diesel, axle ratios, regular/crew cabs, etc. are all factors.

And it's not the empty trailer weight you need to size by. It's the maximum weight your trailer can handle (which should be on a sticker/label somewhere in/on the trailer). Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR). Is 10.4k the max or empty weight?

Trailerlife.com also is a good source. There are other things to consider but this is the main.

We'd need a bit more info to help you out. Do you happen to know your rear axle ratio? What year is the truck? Not knowing the above info, I would say yes, even though the specs might not work out. Strong truck. Max carrying capacity of truck and hitch weight of the fifth wheel would be good to know.

The dry weight of a trailer is a useless number. The dealership adds batteries, propane, slide toppers, maybe a generator which would change the weight of the trailer. The dry weight is just for manufacture. Then of course when it gets home, we add dishes, and all our stuff and approach the GVWR. That is the number to not exceed. And you usually want to tow around 80 percent of the trucks full towing capacity. The answer to your question requires some more information and is not just a simple answer.

Given the fact the OP used the word "settle" makes me wonder if we are stepping into a debate that started before the question was posted.

Well for whatever it's worth looking at the 2014 trailer towing guide (Referenced above) it appears that Any 2500 silverado can tow that weight. That said, however, as others have pointed out, there is more to towing than just that. Special equipment (Electric brake, anti-sway, axle ratio, tongue/pin weight, etc...) and as PaHunter stated, dry weight is probably only a weight you might use when picking it up from the dealer and taking it home. Once there you are going to add SO much more. (propane, dishes, supplies, etc...) much of this stuff will end up STAYING in the trailer. Even using the GVWR is not enough. Again, pin/tongue weight is a very important factor.

If you had 10400 empty capacity, you know if you added water, even just 30 gallons would add 180 lbs to your empty capacity. Agree with everyone else, need more info.

Give me the last 8 of the VIN, I can tell you everything your truck can do.

I have access to GM Global Connect

Uh, rajak, at 8.34 lbs per gallon, 30 gallons would weigh 250 lbs. I know that because I weigh about 30 gallons! Bama Ed

I go with the rough estimate of 8 pounds a gallon. (Obviously a bigger margin of error the more water you get) but even at that it's 240 gallons. I think rajak73 just "Goofed" and used 6 pounds a gallon, but Ed is absolutely correct.

Ed, Is that Fresh water or Sea water ?? oh wait sea water would not be good in the system.

....30 gallons of jet fuel at 6.7 lbs per gallon....uh...oops! Wrong forum...sorry...carry on....:rolleyes1

That is one thing to consider though, if you fill up with diesel which goes at about 7 lbs. per gallon.

Personally I only use natural well sea water...uh...hang on...maybe that wasn't right...

"Is that the African or European swallow?"

"I don't know that....waaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhh"

....stretching it to far? I'll go back to my corner now....

Why on earth would I fill up my freshwater tank with diesel?

It's what I use to get tar and bugs off my truck. Automotive lots use it too. Figured it would be better in the shower. For non-smokers anyway...
