Tour Guide Mike

I can understand that everyone deserves a great Disney experience. I don't understand why people post their TGM questions on the DIS? Should those questions be asked on the TGM site?

I think that people asking about specific TGM advice should indeed ask them on the TGM site. It would not be appropriate to do it here. But if they ask if TGM is worth it, would be the same as asking if allears.net has any good info.

Exactly. People are just asking for others experiences. People ask for advice and information about other Disney information sources all the time here. The DIS is great and there are other great Disney information sites also. There's plenty of room for all of them because we Disney addicts just don't seem to be able to get enough information. :teeth:

That would be fine but usually those discussions here go into more than yes it is worth it. Again would you ask on AllEars if the DIS was worth it? The difference is that TGM charges for the information where the DIS and other sites give it for free.

These are 2 different types of resources. It's certainly not a competition and I would say most people who use TGM also use the DIS. That's the great thing about the internet. There are a lot of resources.

Noone gets upset when people mention other sites like mousesavers or allears or guide books like UG or Passporter.

Why the questioning about TGM comments?

No Competition?

I would dare to guess that the real people behind these services do see it as a competition. Both have bills to pay (big bills, I would imagine) and I would imagine that both would be happy to stake out a niche a live comfortably there. The people providing this "free" service would probably rather not see pay services mentioned here, but that's life on the internet and a certain level of "cross-talk" is accepted. I would hate for us to take it for granted, however add before you know it.....

Perhaps no one gets upset when people mention other sites like mousesavers or allears because a) they're free b) there is no heavy legal agreement that reminds you to forget all that was learned when entering this site c) they're free d) the moderators are fairly tolerant as far as can tell e) they're free, and free is a very good thing. pirate:

I absolutely would ask on allears if the DIS is worthwhile. Why not? What difference does it make if TGM charges a fee or not in relation to what the OP original question was and in relation to people asking about TGM in general?

The DIS is free to us but it's not a charitable organization. They collect money through advertising, sponsorships and donations. It's 2 different business plans and neither is a wrong approach.

I would recommend we remember what the OP question was and stick to answering that. We wouldn't want to scare off a new poster. Safetymom, as a moderator, I am sure you would agree with this .

Moving on.....

Why do TGM topics always turn into debates? :rotfl: :rotfl:

I look at it this way. The difference between the DIS and TGM are like broadcast T.V. and Cable. You pay for cable but have less commercials (TGM). The DIS is like broadcast T.V. It's free but you have commercials (sponsors). Again, I don't see what the big deal is. By the way, I have satellite :earboy2:

And to answer an earlier question...Yes the DIS does get many referals from the TGM crowd. Most notably (but not limited to) are the DISabilities section and the DVC section.

Remember...Think Disney :love2:

I guess we will have to agree to disagree. Trust me I think Disney all the time. :)

I am not trying to scare off a new poster but trying to show that there is a lot of great information on Disney here and it is free. I just don't understand why the TGM supporters have to go on about how great it is on the DIS. In my opinion that doesn't make sense. As I said in a previous post would you post on a General Motors board just how great your Ford is?

Just trying to explain the thinking of some of us. For me it is time to move on to another post. Thank you all for your explanations.

I don't understand why people are having a nutty. Is TGM a competing message board? I thought it was a service that you pay for and it spits you out touring plans and stuff. I don't get why people are mad. But then again, I've never been to TGM. Maybe there's something I'm not seeing. People don't go nuts when people ask about the UG or touringplans.com. ???

I guess its the same reason that on the transportation board people sing the praises of a variety of Town car services. FL Tours is the designated sponsor for that board. The other companies don't cough up money to support DIS yet there are countless postings on other car services.

I always thought that the DIS was to discuss different things that are Disney including what people think of touring methodologies. the UG and Passporter are mentioned without problem. I don't see the difference in asking if TGM is worth checking out and with people responding if they think so or not.

Unfortunately, as in man DIS topics people with strong emotions on both sides get going.... and poof the threads self destruct.

While there is a lot of info at the DIS you really need to know what questions to ask and be prepared for many answers some of which have nothing to do with reality or based on any facts at all. Don't get me wrong on many topics if you ask a point blank question here you will get a point blank answer but so much of it is cluttered by the "Join me I am dancing" and other such posts that having more to do with people just wanting to express thier enthusiasm for WDW rather than ask or answer a question. Or you get posts like the ones on the dinning plan adult / kids credit thread that was people speculating on changes and they way things were that had no basis in real world experience.

Back to the OP. The one difference with TGM is that the information is vetted and if a mistake is there it does get corrected. Also you know what the TGM philosophy of touring is and all of the articles and such are directed towards that touring style. (It is towards having a resort vacation experience.) If you want that type of experience, and you can read about them at the TGM trip reports, then TGM is the best place to go to have that type of experience. On the other hand if you do not want a TGM style vacation, and it is not for everyone, then I would not to TGM. As one person said you could check it out and if it doesn't work use the money back guarantee. No risk.

This thread will now self destruct in 5..4..3..2.. seconds.

I never thought my question would spark so much controversy. :(

There are 3 magic phrases in a topics:

Refillable Mugs
Pool Hopping
Tour Guide Mike.

An honorable mention is buying kids meals on the dinning plan using the credits for adult meals.

Now for real fun start a post on using your refillable mug from a previous trip to All Stars at the Poly while using thier pool when staying at WL and having dinner at CRT and paying for the kids meals on the dinning plan along with mentioning you are in MK because it is a TGM green light day. :rotfl2:

How much do you tip at CRT when paying for a kids meal on the dining plan? :rotfl:

P.S. I love your posts Pedler!

I am planning a trip for Dec. 31 - Jan. 6 and can't decide if it would be a good idea to subscribe to Tour Guide Mike or not. We have been to Disney before but I felt as if I wasn't totally prepared. I want to be better prepared this time. Any opinions would be appreciated.

Also, any opinions on park attendance for this week would also be appreciated.
Thanks :flower:

Welcome to the Dis. Do you know how to use the search function? If you do, you can easily look up the many long threads on this topic. good luck.

Geeze, why is it that anytime a first time poster asks a question people immediatly question their "motive"? I've been around the boards for a while now and am curious about TGM too. No one flammed me when I ask about travel agent recommendations. Why is that? Isn't DU the only travel agent to sponser on the DIS? Lighten up, it really makes people feel uncomfortable and unwelcomed when they ask a question and then get scolded.

Welcome to the DIS, it really can be a nice place!

Don't worry about it at all. I'm sorry it happened. I think you have gotten some good responses from people who have used TGM. Many people really like the site. Those that did not were able to get a refund. If you have other questions, you can always send me a private message. I would be happy to help.

WELCOME. :flower: :flower: :cheer2: :cheer2:
