Total Money Makeover

Did you or someone you know try Dave Ramsey's Total Money Makeover? What are your thoughts?

We bought this book and really enjoyed it. It spurred us on to pay off the cars. Now we have money available to invest in the kids future and our retirement accounts! We recommend this book for anyone who is willing to make changes.

This month is our 5 year anniversary with Dave. Reading his book and taking his suggestions was the BEST decision we made financially in the nearly 20 years that we've been married. We don't follow him letter by letter, we took his advice and modified it into a plan that works for us. So, now we have only a mortgage debt. But we also have 2 paid off cars (a 2007 & a 2005, both should last a while), paid off both DVC contracts, kicking big amounts each month to 401k, and about 4-6 months worth of expenses sitting in an emergency fund. His plan is not difficult...it's by and large, common sense.

Aside from the financial benefits, it's really helped our marriage because money is no longer argued about...we discuss our goals and then come up with a plan to meet them, together.

I've read several of Dave's books and they help to keep me on track. In fact, I just got gazelle intense on our mortgage and will have it paid off in October, 2012 as opposted to December, 2014. The mortgage interest is no longer a tax deduction, so I just want it gone.

Fortunately we learned our lesson with credit cards several years ago and it wasn't too costly. Just a little uncomfortable, but enough to leave a lasting impression. Now we only use cards for the rewards while paying the balance in full each month. And we have an Emergency Fund in place which is really important because we're a single income household.

I think he is a great motivator and I often check the books out of the library when I need a little boost.

Ditto Minnie 1928 - We started it in 2007 - best thing we ever did...literally changed our lives. I can honestly say that I would not have had as many restful nights over the past year or so's economic turmoil had we not started working Dave's plan when we did. And I completely agree with Minnie's comment about helping marriage communication. We thought we had a strong marriage before, but it just got better once we were on the same page financially

I'll ditto what others said. My dh and I just finished his Financial Peace University...it was the best decision we have ever made! Like Minnie1928 said, it not only helped our finances, but it helped our marriage. We are finally on the same page when it comes to budgets and financial planning!

We are better off than we deserve!
We started June 05 and have followed Dave's advice. It has really helped us and we continue to live a debt free comfortable life. I bought additional books when he had them on sale around the holidays a few years ago and shared them with family and friends as Christmas gifts. I highly recommend his advice.
