Update #29

I took My dd to her eye exam today. He RX changed by 3 clicks.

She's in middle school and recently let me know she doesnt like wearing glasses. She's been taking pictures of herself on her ipod without glasses and tells me, "See mom I look better without them."

as her mother I let her know she's just as beautiful with glasses.

I asked if kids make fun off her and she said no they think she looks weird without her glasses-lol I told her see they lke you the way you are:goodvibes. I know shes going to be a teen (13) IN 6 MONTHS. We discussed contacts and we agreed she's not ready just yet but she's happy with having an option when she's ready.

Dr. asked her if she likes wearing glasses and she said its ok. I let him kow , that she's liked her glasses until recently and that she's going to 7th grade. She turned to me and said, " maybe we need to start thinking of".. motions finger toward eye so she wouldnt see. I told him we discussed it but maybe not until next year. hE said he's ok with it only if they understand 100% HOW TO TAKE CARE OF THEM AND USING THE SOLUTION ETC.

so my insurance doesnt cover it and I want to start getting info so that I'm ready he gave me an estimate about $500 a year for contact and solution.

I have a flex acct and plan to use that if i can.
my dd will need toric for astigmatism and cant see far away.

I called Dr. office and they charge $140 for fitting
a box is $68 and i was told she might need 2 boxes one for each eye=$136
and this is for a 6 months supply

Is this a decent price? We buy her glasses at another place and Dr. told me to make sure they can fit contacts. They have an eye dr ther and i think they can but wondering if i should get them fitted at Medical Dr. office where she gets exam..does it make a difference?

How many contacts come in a box?
how often do you need to change them out?
is cleaning with solution a pain?
Does the price seem reasonable for fitting and lenses?

I've been wearing contacts since I was 13. So about 16 years.
From experience as long as your dd is responsible with them then she should be fine. For instance making sure you take them out at night before falling asleep and cleaning them properly. Now I also wear the toric lenses. As far as pricing I always order mine online from a reputable contact place and they have always come in cheaper then what my dr. charges. My contact fitting price us always around 60 to 80 dollars. Then I just get the script and go online and order as needed. The script is good for a year. I change mine about once a month. Sorry so long. Hope this helps.

Just got a deal on contacts for DD(not toric)at Costco. She has been wearing them since 16. Even at 18 I don't think she does 100% at changing her disposables when she should.

Personally I HATE toric lenses! They move and have to settle to the right position when you blink. Annoying! I just wear the glasses.

Ok what do you mean they move around? I dont think that would be good for dd especially in school. Sound like it would be annoying

My husband wears toric lenses by CooperVision and is quite happy with them. He feels his vision is much sharper with these than non-toric, They are approved for extended wear but he takes them out nightly. Last time he bought them (earlier this year) they were $42 for a box of 6 and he gets ~ months wear out of each lens. So ~ $84/eye for a year. Contact solution runs ~ $8/bottle at Target and we go through maybe a bottle a month.

I would ask around and find an optometrist who fits a lot of contacts. They'll be much more familiar with the various contacts available and probably have the best prices. Even some of the mall places are decent for this, the key is finding someone who does this a lot! My husband and I both see a very good opthamologist regularly because of significant eye problems in our family. He doesn't fit our contacts however, and actually got out of that business a couple years ago because he couldn't be competitive on price. We found a decent optometrist that we use just for contacts.

Sorry, to say this, but you might just not have been fitted properly.

I had extremely bad vision, at -9.00 and my O.D fitted me with Torics that were as close as she could get to my vision, (they don't make ANY lenses that high really,) and they didn't move around much. Every once in a while, yes, but NOT every blink.

I had Biometrics, that I liked, as I have really dry eyes, which caused the lenses to become quite dry and a cloudy, protein film would always appear. I had to take out my lenses a couple times a day to clean them off, then re-insert them. This degrades the lenses over time, as they ALL start absorbing the protein deposits over time and they need to be replaced.

The Biometrics were disposable. I'd wear them several times, clean them as I would regular lenses, until they felt awful to wear. Then I'd toss them & open a fresh new pack of lenses.

OP, you can get the first order from your Dr, AND get the prescription, though it will be right on the side of the boxes. The go to VisionDirect.com or some discount place and get the lenses much cheaper.

Also, if you have a Rite Aid near you, they often have sales for Free After Rebate, for free saline solution almost every few weeks.

I finally got Lasik eye surgery and no longer wear contacts. I am at the age wear where I have to wear reading glasses though, and because my vision was so bad to begin with.

But, your DD is way to young to even be thinking about Lasik anytime soon.

My dds eye dr is great. The girls wear Coopervision as well, and so far, for the last 2 years we've gotten them new lenses, there's been a rebate ($50). That does help somewhat. I do have vision insurance.

OP - the pricing you were quoted is about what I paid for my Torics. I just switched back to gas permeable (hard) lenses. However, I don't recommend these for a young person.

At 13, if she wants to wear lenses, she'll be motivated to care for them properly. I think it's a good use of your flex $.

I just switched to daily lenses. I need toric for one eye. Toric are more expensive but I see great with them and I find them very comfortable. I just bought a year supply and it was $675:scared1: That included the exam and I am getting a $80 rebate.

oh boy! Sounds like theres a lot of different brands. I do have vision insurance but it only covers 1 eye exam or 1 contact fitting. i'll use my flex acct for whatever isnt covered

This probably wouldn't be an issue for your child depending on the rx. They are weighted for astygmatism. They worked for me before my rx got too strong, but I really notice them the way my eye is shaped now. Just my personal experience. I've tried several types of lenses and can't get them to work for my right eye.

I have toric lenses for my left eye and they don't feel any different than my right. Yes they are weighted but they don't move around and if they do I can't tell lol

the toric does move as you blink, but usually you should not be able to tell.

however, i have chroic dry eye.

i was able to tell. and i hated it.

i ended up getting lasik. still in glasses but i can roll over and see the clock and swim with no problems.

Toric lenses drove me nuts. I finally gave up and stuck with eyewear. I think I tossed about $300 worth of contacts. Toric lenses are weighted so that they sit on the eye in a precise orientation because the eye is misshapen.

I have been wearing toric lenses in my left eye for 20 years. When well fitted they feel no different than a normal lens. I think I pay about $32 a box at Costco for the toric and $25 for the standard lens.

My daughters both have been wearing contacts since 7th grade. They have always been very good about taking good care of the lenses and their eyes. Just reminded them from time to time when they first started wearing contacts.

I started wearing glasses around the age of 12 and I started wearing contacts at age 13 (almost 7 years ago). I hated wearing glasses and I was pretty much last amongst my peers to get contacts. I have always worn Toric lenses. I've never had a problem with them. It took a day or two for my eyes to adjust to wearing contacts, but by day 3 I could wear them all day, every day (I take them out to sleep). I change out my lenses once a month.

The only problem I've ever had wearing contacts is when I tried out a new contact solution (which the eye doc said was fine for me to do). My eyes became very dried out and very itchy. After about a week I switched back to my old solution and I've been fine ever since.

My daugher has been in contacts since about 4th grade. She is nearly 14 now so at least 5 years. She didn't wear them that much at first but pretty much uses them all the time now. I've worn them since I was 14 so her being in them didn't phase me. Her doctor just said she had to be mature enough to take care of them and I knew her better than anybody.

I am on the edge of needing toric lenses and tried them for a box. They just never felt right and I didn't see that much better. Now, if I had never worn regular soft contacts I wouldn't have known the difference and it probably would have been much easier to get used to them.

She is plenty old enough and I don't think it will cost near that much a year.

I wear a toric lens on one eye and it moves until it's in position and then I don't notice it again. It's very comfortable IMO.

DD#1 has been wearing contacts since she was about 10 years old. She is very responsible and has never had a problem with them.

She also wears toric lenses. They cost me about $58 for a 3 month supply from Costco. She tried to go to regular lenses but didn't care for the feel so she went back to toric.

OP, with regards to whether your DD is ready for contacts or not, only you can be the judge of that. My DD was ready for that responsibility at an early age, but DS needed to wait until he was about 15. :lmao:

I am not a fan of the toric lenses either. I wore regular lenses for about eight years, then quit while I was in college (just could not afford them). A few years ago I tried the toric, and I hated them. They were just uncomfortable. It's not that they moved on me, but I was always aware of them. The material is different than the normal acuvue I like. So I went back to acuvue, although I only use them for when I am in costume or special events. The toric are also more expensive in my prescription (you know, the blind-as-a-bat strength) so that's another down side.

I was thirteen when I started wearing contacts. Some kids can handle it and some can't. Only you can know if she is responsible enough to take care of them and her eyes. Make sure she knows the risks of not cleaning them properly and sleeping in them.
