Toric contact lenses

I also have astigmitism and wore toric lenses for years. They were ok for me, not great. The problem for me was, since they seem to be thicker than other types of lenses, so they don't seem to let as much oxygen through - my eyes would get drier and they would be uncomfortable and get red after a while. I took them out every night and replaced them every few months.

I was told originally that I had to wear toric lenses because I have astigitism.

Recently, I went for an exam and told the opthamologist I am just not as happy with my lenses and wanted to know if I could try something new. She had me try Acuvue Oasys for astigmitism. I can't believe how comfortable they are!

They are very thin and I cannot feel them at all. I am so happy with them. I wear them every day, take them out at night and replace the pair every two weeks. My eyes are not dry and they don't get red.

I think for some people, replacing contacts after a week or so works much better than every few months.

My 13 year old daughter has been wearing hers for a year now and loves them as well.

Just wanted to say, if your daughter has trouble with torics at all -even down the road - there really are a lot of choices for astigmitism now.

I've been wearing toric contacts for over 20 years and I don't notice them moving at all. I've used all sorts of brands but most recently was in CooperVision Frequency 55 torics for about 10 years before switching to a Bausch & Lomb Softlens torics which I don't care for as much as the CooperVision ones and will likely ask my eye doctor to switch me to another brand this year. There are many toric brands out on the market and it makes a big difference when they are fitted properly. Also, some brands work better with some people than others -- even with proper fitting.

As for cost, I don't recall how much I paid for mine but I always get mine from Costco or Sams Club for the best prices. I do cost comparisons online, with my eye doctor and Costco/Sams and the warehouse clubs always have the best prices.

You may want to check the prices for exams and contact fittings at Costco/Sams if you belong to either. They are usually much less expensive than other eye doctors.

I've been wearing torics for about 4 years now, love them. Before them I had gas permeable (hard) lenses. Both times I've gotten exams I was able to try a free trial pair before committing to a larger order of a certain brand. Yes, If I am lying on my side watching tv or something the lense will reposition itself and I my vision goes blurry but for the important stuff (work, driving, etc) it is never a problem.

My daugher has been in contacts since about 4th grade. She is nearly 14 now so at least 5 years. She didn't wear them that much at first but pretty much uses them all the time now. I've worn them since I was 14 so her being in them didn't phase me. Her doctor just said she had to be mature enough to take care of them and I knew her better than anybody.

I am on the edge of needing toric lenses and tried them for a box. They just never felt right and I didn't see that much better. Now, if I had never worn regular soft contacts I wouldn't have known the difference and it probably would have been much easier to get used to them.

She is plenty old enough and I don't think it will cost near that much a year.

so torics are a different type of lense ?SSo theres a soft lense , hard lense and toric? Whats the different of the 3 lenses?

ok sounds like the brand makes a difference for each indivual.

Well my dd is reponsible depending on what i base it on.
She gets stright A's but her room is a disaster-lol!

We think she would love wearing the contacts because she's be happy with her look but not sure about cleaning dunno but dont wanna waste $300-$500. She recently got top braces in May. June she got her herbts appliance and later this month will get bottom braces. We figure one thing at a time. With her braces she was asked herbts or braces and she said she didnt want to deal with braces because she knew she wouldnt change them out. So when asked about the contacts she was excited but worried about being able to take them out. She said next year will be good.

I have them & love them. Yes pricing is about right. I had 2 different prescriptions but now both eyes have caught up and are the same.

As long as she is responsible with cleaning I would say discuss how she can earn the right to them.

You do have to be very clean with them. I made the stupid mistake years ago of forgetting to wash my hands before putting a lense in and ended up with an ulcer on my eye. Just stress - CLEANLINESS.

Ouch!!! That will make her wash her hand. Ok maybe i need to ask whats the cleanigng process? Is it one solution or 2,3? I dont know why i think theres several steps maybe it wont be as bad as I'm thinking.

Back when I was wearing toric lenses, they did not have disposables for the torics. I did have soft lenses and when I first started wearing them, they were quite comfortable and I could go several days without removing them. They were weighted so that they would stay in a specific position on the eye. I had a mark on the bottom and was supposed to try to insert them with the mark at the bottom of the eye. They would rotate until they got to the right spot if I didn't do it right.

Unfortunately I did develop dry eye and had to give up lenses. I've talked to my eye doctor about trying them again and it isn't an option right now he feels. I have developing cataracts so he thinks that sticking with the eye glasses is the best thing for now.

My daughter is nearsighted. She never really asked for contacts. Her prescription is pretty simple so our solution was to buy one expensive and good pair of eyeglasses at the eye doctor's office. Then we would wait for Wal-Mart or Sears to have a buy two pair for $99 special and pick her up a couple of "fun" pairs. Since her prescription was simple the lenses were really cheap. I made her wear the expensive, impact resistant ones for sports and the others were for school, etc.

another ? I was told there two seperate exams one for glasses and one for the contacts. Who does the exam for the contacts the eye Dr. or the place doing the fitting? I didnt get to ask the Dr. a lot of ? because when we went to our appt right when we got in line to check in an alarm went off and the entire building had to be evacuated. We had to wait until fire dept cleared the building for us to go back in. Dr. saw us 45 min after our appt time so he was pretty backed up.

Update

Dh's work just added vision to his benefits whoo! Whoo!:cool1:

Sat we took dd to look at glasses and got info on cost. Her Contact fitting is on July 30th.

Her RX is borderline astigmatism. We will start out with sphereical lenses.

Cost:

She got a cute pair of Candie brand frame. She seems to like this brand.

Frame.................................................................. $165
Dh insurance pays for frames.....--------------------------$130
scratch resisitant, polycarbin & transisition................$free
insurance discount..................................................20% off
..................................................................Total $28.00
This doesnt include taxes
if we go with sperecial
contacts
fitting...dh said that w/a discount?Need to findout....$140
contacts for 1 year & includes maintenace for a year..$100
insurance coverage..............................................-$100
Total..................................................................$140

glasses $28
contacts$140
TOTAL $168

now if she goes with toric the total cost would be around $230

Dh had eyemed
and I have MES

SO is $100 a decent price for a year of contacts? We were told next year the fitting is only $53
Dh's insurance only covers frames every other year and covers the lenses yearly but mine covers $90 each year but the lenses are cost me

Hopeing everything runs smoothly on Monday. DD13 is excited and has even been watching videos on contacts. If all fails I'll only be charged $35 for the fitting and if later she decides contact arent for her I can return the unopened boxes for refund

I used to work for an optometrist and my best advice for contacts is to go to a place that has a huge variety and will only charge you one fitting price even if you have to try a few different trials (this is especially important if you go for torics as the fit is harder). How we did it was that the Dr would chose what he thought was the best brand and give trial lenses and the customer would purchase a box for each eye. The customer would wear them for a week or two and come back and let us know how they were working and the doctor would look at the fit again. If all was well he would release the prescription for the customer to purchase elsewhere. If something wasn't working we would give them a new pair to try and exchange the boxes (only unopened of course) and we would do this until we found something that worked at no additional cost.

Just be mindful that if the doctor gives her glasses that correct for her astigmatism and contacts that don't she may find that her contacts don't allow her to see as well but this all depends on her astigmatism. I notice it a bit but I am so used to contacts that don't correct for the astigmatism that it doesn't bother me. If she wears glasses more than contacts she may notice it.

toric lenses are a general name for contacts that correct for both sphere and cylinder and axis due to an astigmatism you can get them in disposables dailies hard lenses whatever you want. They correct for more issues with the eye and have a slightly different construction so they do wear differently than lenses that only correct for a sphere issue but you should be able to find comfortable ones especially if the astigmatism isn't bad.

Good luck I have been wearing contacts since I was 10 and I love them and have never had an issue with care even when I was young!!

I guess since my left eye has very bad astigmatism, that would be my toric (aka "coke bottle") contact. :rotfl2: I also was able to test out new contacts as I had been wearing gas permeables for years (although I started by wearing soft lenses when I was 14) and wanted to try soft again. Third try and I finally am happy with my left contact, and my right was fine from the start. Yay!

Thanks for the info. My dd goes to 2 different offices. She get her eye exam with an optometry Dr. BUt the glasses there arent really DD's taste and the selection isnt that great. We go to another optometry Dr. office that has a better selection.

I'm a lil confused because the past years we were told dd has astigatism but I guess she has slight or borderline:confused3. The past few years her vision has gone up but this is the first year her vision didnt really change but her Dr. was iffy about it but upped it a lil. DD starts to shurt down after awhile because she feels she has to get 100% during the exam. She's a perfectionist. Dr. is really patient with her and has to remind her this is one test its ok not to get 100% in because he needs to be able to get her the right RX. She's been going to him since she was 5 and she's 13 now.

At the place we get glasses, they calculated dd's rx and also said she's borderline astigatism but they will try the sphereical first. Dh and I have no clue how this all works so we will wait and see. We are hoping her vision is starting to slow down and doesnt get stronger.

From this thread we've learned we can take our RX to another place and price compare but with it being dd's first time if theres any issue she can go back and work with one person. The lady that will be dong the edication dd feels very comfortable with. Not sure how this works at other offices but we were told since its her first year maintence is covered for the 1st year so if she get any type of infections or has issues its covered.

?= i looked on dh's insurance and he also gets another 15% off on materials on contacts. What are materials? Does that mean contacts or is it solution & cases?

I've worn toric lenses for years (astigmatism), and when they are in I don't even feel them. The only time I've ever had a problem with a contact lens moving was if I rubbed my eye (which you should NOT do). If your contacts move around, they're poorly fit.

I have a different prescription for each eye. I use Accuvue lenses and it's about $48 for a box of 6 (so about $96 for both left & right). I change them every two weeks (unless I forget...), so it's about $400 per year... and worth every penny.

No special care is needed; I take them out at bedtime and put them in solution. That's it - no special additives or other cleaners required.

I have no idea what brand they will give dd to try out. We were told she would get 4 boxes for the year and each box has 6 lenses so i guess 2 boxes for each eye. That would mean she's have to change contacts once a month.
Is $100 a good deal for 4 boxes for the year, i guess 2 boxes for each eye?

I read that many change out contacts every 2 weeks, is there a reason for it? Does the contact start to feel uncomfortable after a certain amount of time?

The change the contacts every week is a total BS thing to "prevent infection" (cover their butts in case someone develops an infection because they wore them too long and to get more money).

I wear my contacts for a month, sometimes longer and have never had an infection. As long as you take care of them and clean them, they'll be fine - you just have to make sure that she takes them out when she sleeps (that's when infection happens - not enough oxygen getting to the eye). During her first year or so with contacts, though, be prepared for her to rip/lose them. However, once she gets used to them, she should be able to keep her contacts for a month before needing a replacement, and definitely the 2 week period.

QUestion

My insurance is paying for eye exam, 20% discount on frames
and $100 toward contacts

Dh's inurance is paying for $130 toward frames and lenses are free
so are we losing out on the exam coverage or can that be used toward the 1st time fitting since the Dr. needs to examine her??????

Dh said we used the insurances seperate . oh and his offers a 15% off discount on contacts for material only what exactly are considered material-contacts, solution, contact cases???

Thanks

ps the prices I showed in previous post are for spherical lenses if dd needs toric the cost are hight

fiting for toric $215 and not sure about the contacts

all done and over with. Final cost for fitting, contacts and glasses was $168

glasses - $28
fitting- $140
contacts $100
insur cov-$100
-------------------
total $168
cont rebat$-15
$-15 1st time contact wearer coopervison

final $138 coopervision will send a $30 visa card

dd was RX'd Avaira spherical . she got 4 boxes. lenses are for one month wear.

so i guess contacts were $200:confused3 insur paid $100 and we paid $100 plus the $30 rebate. How much do you pay for your Avaira contacts (spherical)?

The only thing that makes me nervous is for the rebates i need to send in the panel with info on it. I was told if theres any issues with contacts i can return for refund as long as the boxes arent opened, written on or damaged. Well if i have to cut the panel section from the box that would void the return pollicy:confused3
